Cell Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle Instructions For the vocabulary words this unit, you will be making a crossword puzzle with CLUES that includes the following words: 1. Diffusion 9. Carbohydrate 18. hypotonic 2. Osmosis 10. nucleus 19. isotonic 3. Concentration 11. ribosome 20. prokaryote Gradient 12. mitochondria 21. eukaryote 4. Facilitated Diffusion 13. chloroplast 22. plant cell 5. passive transport 14. lysosome 23. animal cell 6. Active Transport 15. cell membrane 24. bacteria 7. Phospholipid bilayer 16. lyse (verb) 25. unicellular 8. Protein 17. hypertonic 26. multicellular For these words, create CLUES to the definition of the word. Here is an example of the difference between a definition, a “definition in your own words” and a CLUE: Definition from book for Carbohydrate- “Compounds made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen” Definition in your own words with regards to cells- “Compounds used for energy in cells and also used as the identification on the outside of the cell membrane” CLUE- “ The “ID Card” of the cell OR what cells use for energy that get broken down in the mitochondria This method allows you to learn a vocabulary word in a few different ways. Also, when you are finished, you will have a perfect review puzzle to either do yourself OR to give to a friend to help review vocabulary. How to make the puzzle: 1. Step 1- Write out your clues in the following format in a Word document a. The word separated by a definition by ONE SPACE. Put each definition on its own line. This will help the puzzle program create your puzzle 2. Step 2- When you have all 26 clues written down in this format, go to http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/CrissCrossSetupForm.asp 3. Enter the title of your puzzle 4. The default size setting should be fine. Adjust if your final puzzle does not look “right” 5. COPY AND PASTE your clues as written into the Step 4 box. The instructions for format are there again for you if you need it. 6. Check your puzzle…are all 26 words and clues represented? Does it look correct? 7. Copy (control+C) and paste (control+V) onto a separate word document document and SAVE it. 8. Print out one copy of your puzzle and DO this puzzle as a key. You will turn this one in to the turn in box in class.
