Directory Of Smart & Grant for Research & Development Awards July – December 2003
INTRODUCTION
In England, the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI’s) Grant for Research and
Development provides grants to help individuals and small and medium sized
businesses research and develop new, technologically innovative products and
processes. It was introduced in June 2003, building upon the success of the Smart
scheme which it replaced. From 1 April 2005 Grant for Research and Development
will be delivered across England by the Regional Development Agencies, including
London Development Agency.
In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland similar support is offered through SMART
and SPUR and delivered by the respective administrations - Scottish Executive,
Welsh Development Agency and Invest Northern Ireland.
Full information is available via the DTI website at www.dti.gov.uk/r-d or see the
"Contacts" at the end of this Directory.
The businesses included in this Directory were selected to receive grants for
research and development projects commencing during the period July 2003 to
December 2003. Many of them may now be at the stage of seeking partners or
investors to help turn the results of those projects into new products and processes.
For further information about individual projects please contact the businesses direct.

“Spot Checks in Science” Educational Resource
Following on from our feasibility study, the aim of this project is to develop a
commercially viable educational resource that will benefit students of all ages. It will
comprise a large bank of computerised tests (Spot Checks in Science) designed and
structured to determine the precise nature of misunderstandings that individual
students may have about important scientific concepts and principles. The tests will
be distributed as CD-ROMs so that students and teachers in schools colleges and
universities may use them in a flexible way at any time.

Diagnostic Device to Identify Respiratory Diseases in Horses
The aim of the project is to establish the potential of a diagnostic device in order to
identify respiratory diseases in horses and other animals by assessing the possibility

animals) and although there are several remedies on the market, there is no simple

Laser welding of 1536 well plates
High-throughput screening,'HTS', is a powerful tool used by pharmaceutical
companies in the discovery of drugs through assay testing. Microlite plates are the
industry standard for conducting these assays and are currently available in 96, 384

The project concerns a study into identifying an industrial process with which to

Development of a low cost process that can replace Powder injection moulding (PIM)

The Development of sealed 600W CO2 laser
The SMART Award will enable Ferranti Photonics to develop a lightweight sealed
CO2 laser of around 600W power for applications in materials processing in industry.
The product will have all of the advantages of the Ferranti MF series industrial lasers
with the very significant advantage of being sealed off which obviates the need for an
internal gas recirculation system and external high pressure gas cylinders.

The project aims to develop a non-toxic, anti-fouling coating for the aquaculture and

this phenomenon, the product wraps the net or yacht hull in a layer of air and
naturally prevents fouling in a non-toxic manner.
