Condition : The Cherry specimen appears to be of fair vigour, though with much minor deadwood throughout. Possible structural damage could occur from Cherry limbs rubbing on main building. Safety Concern : 1 (b) Recommendations : A) Cherry Remove sublateral rubbing against corner of building. Remove sublateral growing towards building which is rubbing against two places on other limbs. Prune rest of crown away building (to clear by 1 m). from Remove deadwood and reshape and rebalance as feasible. B) Cotoneaster Prune back from car park. Remove deadwood and conduct formative pruning to form mutual canopy with adjacent Cherry. Tree No : 6102 Species : Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) Height : 13 m DBH : 0.5 m Maturity/Age : Mature Position : 13 m South of G6101 on boundary with Redland Hill. Condition : The specimen is of pollard origin, the crown arising at the main pollard points at 4 m. The tree has been repollarded at 6 m. 80 years There is evidence of decay around the pollard points and also around the main stem. The crown has shed a number of limbs, with many still suspended within the crown. It is suspected that the specimen has lost a large part of its crown to the North East. The tree appears to be in early stages of decline. Safety Concern Notes : : Recommendations : 1 (b) Suspected limbs are an immediate threat to pedestrians, and should be removed as soon as possible. Two options are provided for treatment. A) Conservation Option Reduce in height by 50%. Remove deadwood, weak live growth and suspended limbs. Conduct 15% thin. Reshape and rebalance as feasible to retain low weeping canopy. B) Fell to ground level. Tree No : G6103 Species : Weeping Cherry (Prunus serrula), Cotoneaster, 2 No Blue Lawson (Chamecyparis lawsoniana Glauca) Height : Up to 7 m DBH : N/A Maturity : Semi-mature Position : Directly South of main entrance building, North of car park. Condition : 3 No Lawson - these are a fast growing species, and give cause for long term safety concern. to The Westmost specimen is growing into the overhead cable. Safety Concern : 2 Recommendations : A) Cherry No action at present. B) Cotoneaster Prune to compact habit. C) Cypresses Reduce in height by 1.5 Reshape and rebalance feasible. m. as Tree No : 6104 Species : Copper Beech 'Purpurea') Height : 18 m DBH : 0.9 m Maturity/Age : Mature Position : 6 m East of East car park entrance, 6 m from boundary with Redland Hill. Condition : The specimen has an imbalance to the East, probably due to the loss of its leading stem in its early development. (Fagus silvatica 90 - 100 years There is a basal cavity on the West face of the stem from ground level to 0.5 m. The crown arises at 4 m. The specimen has a dense vigorous crown, with only minor deadwood and occasional snags present. There is suspected root stress from the building development. Safety Concern : 1 (b) Recommendations : Conduct approx 15% crown wind resistance. thin to reduce Remove deadwood and weak live growth. Reshape and rebalance as feasible. Monitor the response of the specimen to treatment. Tree No : 6105 Species : Japanese Cherry (Prunus serrulata) Height : 4 m DBH : 0.25 m Maturity/Age : Semimature Position : 8 m East of 6104 Condition : The specimen is suppressed by 6104. 15 years It has weeping canker around the main stem up to 1 m, although there is non obvious within the canopy. Safety Concern : 3 Recommendations : Conduct formative deadwood. pruning and remove Tree No : 6106 Species : Cherry (Prunus 'Autumnalis') Height : 5 m DBH : 0.2 m Maturity/Age : Semimature Position : 15 m North of 6104 and 6106 Condition : The specimen is suffering severe dieback due to a bacterial disease (Pseudomonas syringae). subhirtella 20 years It is therefore considered unviable in the long term. Safety Concern : Recommendations : Fell to ground level. to be Tree No : G6107 Species : 4 No Weeping Silver pendula Tristis) Height : Up to 10 m DBH : 0.1 - 0.2 m Maturity/Age : Semi-mature Position : 6 m East of 6105, between South East corner of Polytechnic building and boundary with Redland Hill. Condition : All specimens have been high pruned at approx 4 m. Birch (Betula 15 years The specimens appear to be of fair vigour, although there is some evidence of peripheral dieback in the Southmost specimen. The Eastern over-attenuated, weak forks. specimen is with two possibly Safety Concern : 2 Recommendations : A) Group of 3 No Westmost specimens Remove deadwood growth. B) and weak live Eastmost specimen Reduce by approx 3 m and reduce 2 No laterals by 2 m and 1 m respectively. Shape to form balanced crown. Remove deadwood and weak live growth. Remove minor Sycamore specimen on South boundary wall. Tree No : G6108 Species : East boundary group of A) 1 No Lilac, B) Holly, C) 1 No Holly and 1 No Prunus, D) 1 No Ivy and E) 1 No Sycamore Position : Northern boundary of site, adjacent to tennis courts. Safety Concern : 3 Recommendations : A) Lilac Remove deadwood B) Holly/Prunus Remove deadwood formative pruning. C) and conduct Holly No action at present. D) Ivy No action at present. E) Sycamore Remove. NB : High prune Prunus on North boundary away from tennis court. Tree No : 6109 Species : Malus cv Height : 6 m DBH : 0.25 m Maturity/Age : Mature Position : At Northern entrance to Polytechnic, 5 m South of gate. Condition : There are 4 stem to 2 m. major snags around the The crown is severely unbalanced to the South. Safety Concern : 2 Recommendations : Reduce in height by 2 m. feasible. Rebalance as Prune for fruit and vigour. Remove deadwood and snags. Tree No : 6110 Species : Silver Birch (Betula pendula) Height : 14 m DBH : 0.3 m Maturity/Age : Mature Position : Immediately adjacent corner of building. Condition : Apparently fair vigour, though some dieback about the crown periphery. 40 years to South East Minor deadwood is present. Safety Concern Notes : 1 (b) : The tree is growing immediately adjacent to the building and gives cause for concern over soil shrinkage around foundations and/or direct physical damage due to the root system. Recommendations : Fell to ground in two stages, in order to reduce risk of soil/foundation heave, by immediate uptake of moisture in the soil. Stage 1 Reduce by 50% in scale. Reshape and rebalance as feasible. Stage 2 Fell to ground level. Tree No : 6111 Species : Copper Beech 'Purpurea') Height : 20 m DBH : 0.8 m Maturity/Age : Mature Position : On border with neighbouring property to West. Condition : The specimen forks at 4 m, giving rise to three principal stems, possibly of pollard origin. (Fagus silvatica 80 - 90 years The specimen appears to be of fair vigour, with only minor deadwood present. The crown is touching both buildings, and this would suggest that there is contact between the roots of the tree and foundations. There is evidence of physical damage to the concrete surface around the specimen. Safety Concern : 2 Recommendations : Two options are provided. A) Conservation option Reduce scale of crown by approx 20% to reduce leverage and also transpiration requirements, and therefore root activity. Reduce and reshape as feasible. Remove deadwood. B) Removal option Fell to ground level in two stages to reduce risk of soil heave. Stage 1 Reduce by reshape and as feasible. 50% and rebalance Stage 2 Fell to ground level.
