Role:
Questions:
You interview and hire people for jobs. Your job is to
check references and credentials of potential
applicants. You have also worked in the local
university’s Admissions Office, reviewing the
applications of potential students.
What is a social networking site? Why do teens like to
use social networking sites like MySpace or
Facebook? What types of information might they
share with others on those sites?
You have become increasingly aware that some
students are posting inappropriate pictures, hurtful
comments, and personal information about themselves
and others (some of which is objectionable). You are
concerned that what seems “fun and silly” to students
today may not be a good reflection of their character
and might haunt them in the future.
There is a new “permanent record” and it’s online – in
chatrooms, social networks, blogs, and Web pages.
Topics:
 Your Online Identity and Reputation On “The
Cyberspace Billboard”
 The Digital Footprint That You Leave
 Consequences of Inappropriate Photos, Videos,
Comments, and Other Postings in Social
Networking Sites, Tweets, Blogs, and Social
Media Sharing Sites
 Tips for Safe Socializing Online
Even if you delete information that is online or have a
site taken down, how might that information still be
available? Why might that be a problem in 5 or 10
years?
What are the potential dangers of sharing and posting
personal information in a blog or a social networking
site? What information should not be posted online or
shared in a profile? What can be included? Why
should a Facebook or MySpace user keep their user
profile private?
How could what you or others put in an electronic
message, post online, or share in a profile affect you in
the future? What could be the risks and consequences
of posting negative comments about someone or
putting up inappropriate pictures, videos, information?
How might your parents, potential employers and
college admission officers view the posts? How could
it affect your current employability if you had a job?
How could someone look at your activity on the
Internet? What would happen if you type in your name
or a friend’s name into a search engine like Google?
Does it bring up any information about you or a
friend? Would you want your parents or other adults to
see what is online about yourself (or others)?
