When these taller than normal partition heights are required, consideration must be given to length restrictions for manufacturing and shipping steel studs, scaffolding, stud placement, and deflection. Use double structural studs back-to-back 24 inches on center. Attach studs back to back with screws approximately 4 feet on center. For 5-psf wind load, 20 gauge runner track is recommended. The fasteners should have a capacity of 300 pounds in single shear and bearing. For 10-psf wind load, 18 gauge runner track attached with fasteners with 400 pound single shear and bearing is recommended. Do not allow gypsum sheathing to be exposed to the weather beyond the time period recommended by the manufacturer. E. Environmental Conditions: 1. Do not install gypsum board when ambient temperature is below 40°F. 2. In cold weather and during gypsum panel joint finishing, the temperatures within the building shall be maintained within the range of 55° to 70° F (13° to 21° C). Adequate ventilation shall be provided to carry off excess moisture. Both cores meet the specifications of ASTM C 36 and type X; however, the FIRECODE “C” core is used in several tested assemblies because of its superior ability to resist fire and gravity. To specify these assemblies, it will be necessary to note the “C” core in your specifications. Type “C” Core is normally used in firerated ceiling applications. The Type “FRX-G” panels can be substituted for Type “X” panels. Abuse Resistant (AR) panels do not have fiberglass reinforcing mesh on the back. Extend framing to underside of [suspended ceiling] [underside of deck or roof] [as shown on drawings]. 3. Use Head-of Wall or Roof Assembly (Slip Track) UL System number [HW-D-0001] [HWD-0002] [HW-D-0009] for partitions that extend to the deck or roof. 4. Erect framing and panels plumb, level and square in strict accordance with approved drawings. 5. Attach steel track at floor and ceiling to structural elements with suitable fasteners 2inches from each end and spaced 24-inches o.c. To suspended ceilings, use toggle bolts or hollow anchors spaced 16-inches o.c. 6. Install concrete anchors only after full compressive strength has been achieved. 7. Butt all track joints. Securely anchor abutting pieces of track to a common structural element, or splice them together. 8. Align and plumb studs vertically with the open side facing the same direction, and securely engaging with the flanges or webs of both upper and lower tracks at [16-inches] [24-inches] o.c. When necessary, splice studs with a minimum 8-inch nested lap and two positive attachments per stud. 9. Attach wall stud bridging in a manner to prevent stud rotation. 10. Place studs in direct contact with all doorframe jambs, abutting partitions, partition corners, and existing construction elements. 11. Provide temporary bracing until erection is completed. 12. Where studs are installed directly against exterior walls and a possibility of water penetration through walls exists, install asphalt felt strips between studs and wall surfaces. 13. Securely anchor all studs for shelf-walls and those adjacent to door or window frames, partition intersections, corners, and freestanding furring to ceiling and floor track. 14. Securely anchor studs to jamb and head anchors of door and borrowed-light frames by bolt or screw attachment. Over metal door and borrowed-light frames, place horizontally a cut-to-length section of track, with a web-flange bend at each end, and secure to strutstuds with two screws in each bent web. Position a cut-to-length stud (extending to ceiling track) at vertical panel joints over doorframe header. Where indicated in the drawings, provide for structural vertical movement using means in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. 16. Position Resilient Channel at right angles to steel studs, space [16-inches] [24-inches] o.c. and attach to stud flanges with pan head framing screws driven through holes in channel mounting flange. 2. Install channels with mounting flange down. (Channel may be inverted at floor to accommodate attachment of base.) 3. Locate channels 2-inches from floor and 6-inches from ceiling. 4. Extend channels into all corners and attach to corner framing. 5. Cantilever channel ends no more than 6-inches. 6. Splice channel by nesting directly over stud; screw-attach through both flanges. Reinforce with screws located at both ends of splice. 3.4 SHAFTWALL SYSTEM INSTALLATION (Proprietary Systems) A. Studs and Liner Panels installation: 1. Position steel runners at floor and ceiling with the short leg toward finish side of wall. 2. Securely attach runners to structural support with power driven fasteners at both ends and max. 24-inches o.c. 3. With steel frame construction, install floor and ceiling runners and J-Runners or E-Studs on columns and beams before steel is fireproofed. Remove spray fireproofing from runners and E-Suds before installing gypsum liner panels (2-hour steel fireproofing). 4. For other structural steel fireproofing requirements, use Z-shaped standoff clips secured to structural steel before fireproofing application. 5. Cut liner panels 1-inch less than floor-to-ceiling height and erect vertically between JRunners. 6. Where shaft walls exceed maximum available panel height, position liner panel end joints within upper and lower third points of wall. Stagger joints top and bottom in adjacent panels. 7. Screw studs to runner on walls that exceed 16-feet. 8. Use steel C-H Studs 3/8-inch to not more than 1/2-inch less than floor-to-ceiling height, and install between liner panels with liner inserted in the groove. 9. Install full-length steel E-Studs or J-Runners vertically at T -intersections, corners, doorjambs, and columns. 10. Install full-Iength E-Studs over gypsum liner panels both sides of closure panels. 11. For openings, frame with vertical E-Stud or J-Runner at edges, horizontal J-Runner at head and sill, and reinforcing as shown on the drawings. Suitably frame all openings to maintain structural support for wall. 12. Install floor-to-ceiling steel E-Studs each side of steel hinged doorframes and jamb struts each side of elevator door frames to act as strut-studs. 13. Install sound attenuation fire blankets per manufacturer’s current written instructions where indicated for sound and fire ratings prior to installing gypsum panels. Friction fit securely between studs. Butt ends of blankets closely together and fill all voids. ************************************************************************************************************************ To prevent objectionable sag in new gypsum panel ceilings, the weight of overlaid insulation should not exceed 1.3 psf for 1/2" thick panels with frame spacing 24" o.c.; 2.2 psf for 1/2" panels on 16" o.c. framing and 5/8" panels 24" o.c. ************************************************************************************************************************ 2. Install per ASTM C919; where sound rating partitions are indicated, seal the partition with a 1/4" min. round bead of acoustical sealant on the outside of the floor track. Locate end joints as far from the center of ceilings and walls as possible. Apply gypsum panels first to the ceiling and then to the walls. Extend ceiling board into corners and make firm contact with top plate. To minimize end joints, use panels of maximum practical length. Fit ends and edges closely, but not forced together. Stagger end joints in successive courses with joints on opposite sides of a partition placed on different studs. Position gypsum board to within a 1/4" of the floor line. GYPSUM DRYWALL 09290 / 09 29 00-18 9. Properly space fasteners in careful accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation and code requirements. Space fasteners not less than 3/8" from edges and end of panels and drive as recommended for specified fastening method. Drive fasteners in field of panels first, working towards ends and edges. Hold panel in firm contact with framing while driving fasteners. Drive fastener heads slightly below surface of gypsum panels in a uniform dimple without breaking face paper. 10. Cut ends, edges, scribe or make cutouts within field of panels in workmanlike manner. Use keyhole saw to make cutouts. Do not use “score and knockout” method. Gypsum board should be cut to size utilizing a knife and straight edge. Power saws and routers should be used only if equipped with a dust collection device. 11. Attach gypsum panels to framing supports by: a. Standard Single Nailing Method: Attach panels with required nails spaced a maximum of 7" o.c. for ceilings, 8" o.c. for walls. Drive nails home with heads slightly below surface of panels to provide a uniform dimple 1/32" deep. Do not use a nail set; avoid breaking face paper. Use screw attachment to secure panels where nail pops occur. b. Adhesive Application: Follow adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations. Attach gypsum panels with drywall stud adhesive applied in a continuous 3/8" bead at the center of attachment to face of framing members. Where two panels meet on a framing member, apply two beads permitting adhesive contact to both panels. Do not apply adhesive to members such as bridging, diagonal bracing, etc., into which no supplemental fasteners will be driven. Immediately following panel erection, apply fasteners per manufacturer’s direction. Hand impact panel along framing to ensure contact at all points. 11. Gypsum Board Ceiling Erection a. Apply gypsum wallboard first to the ceiling and then to the walls. Attach wallboard firmly to framing members without cutting the surface paper or fracturing the core. b. For single-layer ceiling application, gypsum wallboard may be applied with the long dimension either paralleled or at right angles to the framing members. All abutting ends and edges, except in horizontal application, shall occur over framing members. Use boards of the maximum practical length to minimize end joints. Stagger end joints in adjacent rows. Attach board with 1” long, No.6 wallboard screws @ 8" o.c. at edges of board and 12" o.c. in the field. 12. Power-driven screws: Attach gypsum panels with required fasteners spaced per firerated construction test; for non-fire-rated construction, a maximum of 16" o.c. for walls, 12" o.c. for ceilings. Screw heads must be driven perpendicular to board face and slightly below the surface of the panel (max. 1/32"), but not deep enough to break the face paper. Do not drive screws closer than 3/8" from any edge. 3.06 FIBER-REINFORCED GYPSUM PANEL INSTALLATION A. General: Comply with applicable requirements of ASTM C840 and GA 216, fire rated assembly requirements and as specified herein, unless otherwise required by local building authorities. 1. Cut FIBEROCK Brand Panels to size with a utility knife and straight edge. A Snapper Shear tool specifically designed for FIBEROCK® Brand Panels may also be used. Use a power saw only if equipped with a dust-collection device. Panels may be cut by scoring and snapping or by sawing, working from the face side. When using the score-and-snap method, score the panel twice and snap the panel away from the cut face. The backside of the panels is then broken by snapping the panel in the reverse direction. If a poweroperated saw is used, a low-RPM unit with 3-1/2_ carbide blade is recommended. 2. When necessary, use a rasp or SURFORM® to smooth cut edges. Holes for pipes, fixtures and other small openings can be cut out with a saw or a drywall router equipped with a special bit (available from Rotozip Tool Corporation). When a router is used, hold panels away from the wall. Where gypsum board meets projecting surfaces, scribe and neatly cut. Install panels to ceilings prior to installation at walls. Stagger joints on opposite faces of wall so that joints occur on different studs. Space fasteners not less than 3/8 inch from edges, ends, and corners of panels. Fasten outward from center or field of each panel; drive fasteners straight and snug with heads dimpling (slightly below) board surface. Wood framing – Use corrosion-resistant Type W or Type S buglehead screws or hotdipped galvanized roofing nails. Fasteners must be of sufficient length to ensure a minimum 3/4-inch penetration into wood framing. Steel Framing – Use Corrosion-resistant Type S-12 buglehead screws for 20-12 ga. steel framing. When using 20 ga. steel framing fasteners should be spaced no greater than 8inch o.c. Fasteners must be of sufficient length to ensure a minimum of 3/8-inch penetration into steel framing. Fit panels snugly into steel door frames; no joints to occur within 12 inches of the corner of door frames, except at intersecting walls. Contractors installing tile and tile-setting materials should always follow current ANSI specifications, TCA guidelines and the specifications of the surfacing materials manufacturer. MOISTURE AND MOLD-RESISTANT GYPSUM PANEL INSTALLATION A. General: 1. Install moisture and mold-resistant gypsum panels complying with ASTM C630 in accordance with ASTM C840, GA-201, GA-216, and manufacturer’s current written instructions to comply with codes having jurisdiction. 2. Pre-cut panels to required sizes and make necessary cutouts. Before installing panels, brush thinned tile adhesive over all cut or exposed panel edges at utility holes, joints, and intersections. 3. Install panel perpendicular with paper bound edge-abutting top of spacer strip. Fasten panels with nails 8" o.c. max. or screws 12" o.c. max. Where ceramic tile is more than 5/16" thick will be used, space nails 4" o.c. max. and screws 8" o.c. max. 4. In areas to be tiled, treat all fastener heads with SHEETROCK® Setting-Type Joint Compound. Fill tapered edges in gypsum panel with the SHEETROCK Setting-Type Joint Compound, embed SHEETROCK® Joint Tape firmly, and wipe off excess compound. Follow immediately with a second coat over the taping coat, being careful not to crown the joint. Fold and embed tape properly in all interior angles to provide a true angle. ************************************************************************************************************************ GYPSUM DRYWALL 09290 / 09 29 00-20 Due to the vast difference in paper color, untiled moisture and mold-resistant gypsum panels will not blend with regular gypsum panels without finishing with at least two coats of setting-type joint compound. ************************************************************************************************************************ 1. In areas not to be tiles embed and treat fasteners with SHEETROCK® Setting-Type Joint Compound applied in the conventional manner. Finish with at less 2 coats of joint compound applied according to directions. 2. Prior to tile erection, seal cut panel edges of all openings around pipes, fittings, and fixtures with thinned tile adhesive. Remove spacer strips, but do not caulk gap at bottom of panels. 3.08 CEMENT BOARD INSTALLATION A. General: 1. Install cement board in accordance with manufacturer’s current written instructions to comply with codes having jurisdiction. 2. After tub, shower pan, or receptor is installed, place temporary 1'4" spacer strips around lip of fixture. Pre-cut boards to required sizes and make necessary cutouts. Fit ends and edges closely but not forced together. 3. Install board-abutting top of spacer strip. Stagger end joints in successive courses. Fasten boards to wood studs spaced max. 16" o.c. and bottom plates with 1 1/4" DUROCK Wood Screws or 1 ½" galvanized roofing nails spaced 8" o.c. Fasten boards to minimum 20 gauge (0.0312 inches thick) steel studs spaced 16" o.c. and bottom runners with 1 1/4" DUROCK Steel Screws spaced 8" o.c. with perimeter fasteners at least 3/8" and less than 5/8" from ends and edges. In double-layer walls where cement boards are installed over base-layer gypsum boards, apply a water barrier (not a vapor retarder) over gypsum boards. Maximum fastener spacing for ceilings is 6" o.c. 4. For ceramic tile and thin brick substrates: a. Apply panel and butt joints over metal stud framing. b. Prefill all cement board panel joints, and joints where cement board abut other panels or surfaces such as gypsum board, with tile setting mortar or adhesive and then immediately embed a 2-inch alkali-resistant fiberglass tape and level the joints. As an alternate, apply DUROCK Interior Tape over the joints and then apply tile-setting mortar or adhesive, forcing it through the tape to completely fill and level the joints. 5. For dry untiled abuse-resistant areas: a. Seal cement board with Type 1 Ceramic Tile Adhesive. (Mix four parts adhesive with one part water.) Embed SHEETROCK® Joint Tape over joints and treat fasteners with SHEETROCK® Setting-Type Joint Compound (DURABOND 45 or 90) applied in conventional manner. Flat trowel DURABOND 45 or 90 over board to cover fasteners and fill voids to a smooth surface. Finish joints with at least two coats of SHEETROCK® Ready-Mixed Joint Compound. Do not apply ready-mixed or settingtype compound over unsealed board. 3.09 TRIM INSTALLATION A. General: Install SHEETROCK® Paper Faced Drywall Beads and Trim at all internal and external angles formed by the intersection of either gypsum panel surfaces or other surfaces. Apply SHEETROCK ®Paper Faced Drywall Outside Corner to all vertical or horizontal external gypsum corners in accordance with manufacturer’s directions to meet requirements for LIFE TIME warranty from United States Gypsum Company (USG). 1. Make sure that gypsum board is clean, firm, and dry before applying corner bead and trim. 2. Make sure that the steel bead or trim is wide enough to cover any gaps in the gypsum board. 3. Leave a 1/4" gap between the bottom edge of the corner bead or trim and the floor. 4. Apply a full layer of taping joint compound beneath the bead or trim paper and steel. GYPSUM DRYWALL 09290 / 09 29 00-21 5. Make sure that taping coat is completely dry before applying additional coats. Install bullnose or square tape on outside corner bead profile as indicated at external corners. Install cove or square tape on inside corner bead profile as indicated. Install tape on inside offset trim for angles greater than 90°. Install tape on “L” trim where gypsum board abuts to dissimilar surfaces. Install tape on reveal edge trim where gypsum board abuts with suspended ceiling as shown as indicated. G. Install trim whenever the edge of gypsum board would otherwise be exposed or semiexposed. H. Install control joints as detailed at spacings and locations required by referenced gypsum board application and finish standard, and as shown by the architect for visual effect. Locate joints to uniformly subdivide the wall or ceiling into equal sections. 1. Break gypsum panels and resilient channels behind joint and back by double supports. Apply acoustical sealant to fill gap and attach control joint to face layer with nails or 9/16" galvanized staples spaced 6" o.c. on both flanges along entire length of joint. 2. Install control joints where partition or furring exceeds 30'. 3. Install control joints where ceiling dimensions exceed 50' in either direction with perimeter relief or 30' without relief. 4. Install control joints where wings of “L”, “U”, and “T” - shaped ceiling areas are joined. 5. Install control joints where partition or furring abuts a structural element (except floor) or dissimilar wall or ceiling. 6. Install control joints where ceiling abuts a structural element, dissimilar wall or partition or other vertical element. 7. Install control joints where construction changes within the plane of the partition or ceiling. 8. Install control joints at less-than-ceiling height doorframes extending from both corners. Treat window openings in same manner as door openings. B. C. D. E. F. 3.10 FINISHING OF GYPSUM BOARD A. General: Finish all face panel joints, internal angles, penetrations, and surface defects with a joint treatment system applied according to manufacturer’s directions. Spot exposed fasteners on face panels and finish corner bead, control joints and trim as required to prepare gypsum board surfaces for decoration and levels of gypsum board finish as indicated. B. Recommended Levels of Gypsum Board Finish GA-214 is the standard. 1. Level 1: a. All joints and interior angles shall have tape set in joint compound. Surface shall be free of excess joint compound. Tool marks and ridges are acceptable. b. Finish schedule level for ceiling plenum areas, attics, building service corridors, concealed areas and where indicated for sound and smoke control. Where a fireresistance rating is required, details of construction shall be in accordance with reports of fire tests of assemblies that have met the fire-rating requirement. 2. Level 2: a. All joints and interior angles shall have tape embedded in joint compound and wiped with a joint knife leaving a thin coating of joint compound over joints and interior angles. Fastener heads and accessories shall be covered with a coat of joint compound. Surface shall be free of excess joint compound. Tool marks and ridges are acceptable. Joint compound applied over the body of the tape at the time of tape embedment shall be considered a separate coat of joint compound and shall satisfy the conditions of this level. b. Finish schedule level for areas that water-resistant gypsum backing board is used as a substrate for tile, and where indicated. 2. Level 3: a. All joints and interior angles shall have tape embedded in joint compound and one additional coat of joint compound applied over all joints and interior angles. Fastener heads and accessories shall be covered with two separate coats of joint compound. GYPSUM DRYWALL 09290 / 09 29 00-22 All joint compounds shall be smooth and free of tool marks and ridges. Note: It is recommended that the prepared surface be coated with a drywall primer prior to the application of final finishes. See Article 2.08 DRYWALL PRIMER of this SECTION. b. Finish schedule level for areas to receive heavy- or medium- texture finishes before final painting, or where heavy-grade wall-coverings are to be applied as the final decoration. 2. Level 4: a. All joints and interior angles shall have tape embedded in joint compound and two separate coats of joint compound applied over all flat joints and one separate coat of joint compound applied over interior angles. Fastener heads and accessories shall be covered with three separate coats of joint compound. All joint compounds shall be smooth and free of tool marks and ridges. Note: It is recommended that the prepared surface be coated with a drywall primer prior to the application of final finishes. See Article 2.08 DRYWALL PRIMER of this SECTION. b. Finish schedule level for areas to receive flat paints, light textures, or light wall coverings. 2. Level 5: a. All joints and interior angles shall have tape embedded in joint compound and two separate coats of joint compound applied over all flat joints and one separate coat of joint compound applied over interior angles. Fastener heads and accessories shall be covered with three separate coats of joint compound. A thin skim coat of joint compound or a material manufactured especially for this purpose shall be applied to the entire surface. The surface shall be smooth and free of tool marks and ridges. Note: It is recommended that the prepared surface be coated with a drywall primer prior to the application of final finishes. See Article 2.08 DRYWALL PRIMER and Article 2.09 DRYWALL PRIMER-SURFACER of this SECTION. b. Finish schedule level where gloss, semi-gloss, enamel, or nontextured flat paints are specified and where severe lighting conditions occur. See GA-214-96 for description of Critical (Severe) Lighting Areas. 3.11 TEXTURE FINISHES A. General: Prepare and apply drywall primer over all gypsum board surfaces indicated to receive texture finish in strict accordance with texture finish manufacturer’s current written instructions. 1. Verify finish requirements with finish schedule. 2. Mix and apply texture finish in accordance with manufacturer’s current written instructions to produce a uniform texture matching Architect’s samples. 3. Remove any overspray or droppings created during application. 3.12 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Maintain premises in a neat and orderly condition by promptly removing scrap and residual compounds from area and surfaces. B. Provide final protection and maintain conditions, in a manner suitable to installer that ensures the gypsum board assemblies will remain without damage or deterioration at time of Substantial Completion.
