Vice Provost for Enrollment Management
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is among 51 public and private universities classified by the Carnegie
Foundation for both “very high research activity” and “community engagement.” UAB attracts the best and brightest students
from Alabama, the nation, and more than 100 countries around the world. In 2014 the University had its sixth year of record
overall enrollment with over 19,000 undergraduate, graduate, pre-professional, and post-doctoral students attending UAB.
Nearly 70 percent of the student body attends the University full-time, and more than 60 percent of the freshmen live on
campus. The Princeton Review has called UAB “a truly great American melting pot of different cultures, religions, and races,” and
UAB consistently ranks among the top universities nationally for diversity. Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, with an
estimated population of 1.2 million in the metropolitan region.
Reporting to the Provost, the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management provides executive leadership and coordinates a
comprehensive enrollment management unit to develop strategies focused on student recruitment, admissions, retention, and
persistence to graduation. Working collaboratively to meet institutional goals and align resources with campus priorities, the
Vice Provost provides leadership and direction to the Division of Enrollment Management which consists of Undergraduate
Admissions, University Registrar, International Recruitment & Student Services, Student Financial Assistance, New Student
Programs, Enrollment Operations, and Retention Initiatives. The position is responsible for administrative oversight of
budget, personnel, policies and procedures, and new program development within the Division. The Vice Provost guides
institution-wide enrollment discussions, develops short- and long-range plans, and establishes goals and objectives for
enrollment management to continually improve student enrollment and retention; develops and maintains highly collaborative
working relationships with senior UAB administrators and faculty to coordinate and assure appropriate participation by
academic units in student recruitment and retention; identifies and cultivates new recruitment markets; provides management
oversight for the effective application of technology and the development, enhancement, and maintenance of the admissions,
financial aid, and registrar modules within an integrated Banner and Oracle interface; and oversees the collection and analysis
of admission, enrollment, and attrition data to evaluate the accomplishment of immediate and long-range objectives. This is a
high impact position that brings energy and focus to proactive enrollment management, and increasing the quality and
diversity of undergraduate and international students at the University. The position oversees just under 100 staff members
with 7 direct reports, and manages an annual operating budget of $7.8 million, and $175 million distributed as financial aid and
scholarships
The successful candidate will possess a master’s degree (doctorate preferred) and demonstrated progressive growth in the
supervision and leadership of enrollment management in higher education. The ideal candidate will also have proven
experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of marketing and recruitment strategies; the utilization of
student information systems and technologies to support effective recruitment, admission, and student success; skills in
strategic planning and organizational development; an ability to coordinate, lead, and support the work of multiple offices in
support of institutional enrollment and retention goals; an understanding of the use of financial aid to enhance student
enrollment and retention; commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and a highly collaborative and relational style in
working with a broad array of campus stakeholders to enhance planning, decision-making, and evaluation of enrollment and
retention strategies and process.
