Grade 7 Complementary Program Overview

Section A – Second Languages

Second Languages are not mandatory at the grade 7 level.

French (Full Year)

Come and have fun in French! Students at the introductory level will be focus on speaking conversational French. Topics will include French cuisine, skits, role-playing and games. Units are tailored to students’ French experiences and knowledge base. Come and learn how to speak, write and explore French! Previous experience is an asset, but not necessary.

Spanish (Full Year)

Yo quiero Taco Bell! Hasta la vista, baby! Is that the extent of your understanding of Spanish? If so, this is the course for you! Spanish is one of the world’s most rapidly growing languages. In this class students will learn some of the language basics, such as simple greetings, shopping, getting around, and ordering food. Previous experience is an asset, but not necessary.

Section B – Fine Arts

Art

The focus of Art class is for students to have the opportunity to explore working with various media in an environment that promotes individual interpretation of assigned projects. As well, it is very important for students to enjoy the process of creating art without the worry that you have to possess ‘innate artistic gifts’ to be successful in this subject area.

Grade seven projects that have been tentatively scheduled include creating realistic sketches, an introduction to watercolour painting - two separate projects, working with clay to make

‘miniatures’, and creating papier-mâché people. However, it is important to note that due to the exploratory nature of art, students have input into the projects that are selected and the length of time given to complete them.

Art Plus 7

Art Plus is an extension of the regular art program and offers students who love art the opportunity to spend more time in the art room. Students who take this option will explore additional media and projects than those experienced in Art 7. As some grade 7 students may not be scheduled for

Art 7 until second semester, Art 7 is not required.

Band – Intermediate (Full Year)

The grade 7 Band program is divided into 2 classes: Woodwind or Brass/Percussion. These two classes come together to form the Intermediate Band, an ensemble that provides students with learning and performance opportunities on wind and brass/percussion instruments. New students are welcome and will be mentored by their peers. Students will perform in two concerts, participate in one band camp, attend 2 band workshops and experience adjudication at festival. Students are required to participate in one early morning rehearsal each week on Thursdays.

FEE: instrument rental $100, band resource fee $90, band camp cost T.B.A.

Woodwind is a class designed around the development of the woodwind family of instruments: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone. Musical skills and topics are reviewed and augmented from the previous year.

Brass/Percussion is a class designed around the development of the brass family of instruments: trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. Musical skills and topics are reviewed and augmented from the previous year.

Dance

Dance offers students the opportunity to study this art form in a community built on trust and encouragement. Students will develop an appreciation for dance both as a subject and as an artistic expression. Students may be involved in some or all of the following: Jazz, African, So You

Think You Can Dance or other dance studies, Contemporary, and Bollywood. Participation may lead to presentation in a Dance Show.

Drama

The students will gain a better understanding of self and others, as well as develop effective communication skills by participating in and reflecting on various activities and disciplines. The five disciplines of drama: improvisation, movement, speech, theatre studies, and technical theatre will be utilized in a student centered active learning program. The students may be involved in some or all of the following: drama orientation, improvisation, mime, make-up, stage fighting, readers’ theatre, and Old Time Radio Drama.

Guitar

This course may require students to be involved as a performer, listener, and composer through the playing of acoustic guitars.

The main goals are:

 Develop skills in listening to, performing and reading music

 Strive for musical excellence

 Develop self-expression and communication through music

 Have fun!

Section C – Career Technology Foundations (CTF)

Media and Technology

Students in Media and Technology will explore various sources of media creation and modification.

Students will be encouraged to explore various modules based on their own personal interests.

These areas could include aspects of film, photography, web page design, animation, photo manipulation and film editing.

Construction

Students may complete four to six small projects at this level to explore as many tools and processes as possible. Students may use hand tools, a drill press, power sanders, a band saw and/or a lathe at this level.

Foods

If you like cooking (and eating) this is the course for you! In Foods 7 students take an introductory look at the world of cooking. Course work involves completing a ‘Foods Safety’ component, classroom assignments, and the opportunity to prepare a variety of recipes.

Foods 7—Healthy Living

This Foods class is designed to incorporate basic horticulture and gardening. Students will work with the indoor garden and be able to create menu items with the produce they grow.

Foods 7—Snack Foods

An additional foods class for students interested in focusing on creating, and eating, snack foods.
