Cheetahs
Where do they live?
 Cheetahs historically lived throughout Africa, the Middle East, and
Southern Asia but now most of the remaining wild cheetah populations are
located in sub-Saharan Africa
 Cheetahs can be found in savannas, open woodlands and in the semidesert areas

Cheetahs take baths in the water to keep them cool during the day and
at night they keep warm by sleeping in the long grass.
What do cheetahs look like?
 Cheetahs have solid spots, which makes them the only big cat that
has them. Cheetahs have a leaner body that helps them run at top
speed.
 Cheetahs have tear markings along their eyes, cheetahs have a very
interesting face. Around the top of their eye it does not have spots
but everywhere else they do.
 Cheetah’s coats helps them stay alive because if they had any other
kind of coat there predators would be able to see them. Throughout
Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Asia there are grass lands that
are the color of a gold, brown, and copper, and that is was the
cheetahs coat looks like because they have black spots that fit into
the brown in the grasslands and there gold fits into it.
What do cheetahs eat?
 Cheetahs eat about 6 ½ pounds of meat a day.
 Cheetahs are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They eat antelope,
gazelles and other animals that weigh around 40kg. Cheetahs eat about 6
pounds a day, that’s like us eating 12 steaks a day!
 Cheetahs stalk their prey in the tall grasses where they blend in

The cheetah lives in an environment that suites the cheetah, so that
there is food they can eat there. Cheetahs eat food such as antelope,
gazelles, zebras, and any other animals that weigh around 40 pounds.
Cheetahs can also eat small animals like bunnies, but that would mean
more work.
How are cheetahs different from other cats?
 Cheetahs are different from other big cats because they can’t roar but
they can purr. Cheetahs have simple black spots, while leopards have a
more complex pattern.
 Cheetahs can climb trees but not as complex as leopards, and other big
cats. Cheetahs have a leaner body than most big cats which allows them to
run faster than most big cats.
 Cheetahs can reach 62 MPH in 3 seconds while other big cats can reach
about 50 MPH. Cheetahs may be faster than other cats, but they get tired
really quickly so they have to be close to their prey otherwise they will be
too tired to get it.
How do cheetahs communicate?
 Cheetahs make noises because it can help them warn each other if a
predator is coming.
 It is hard for other cheetah's to warn one another but the sounds a cheetah
does make is: chirping yelping, growling, snarling and bleating sounds as
well as purring!
 Cheetahs can make many noises but they cannot roar but unlike lions,
tigers, leopards, and jaguars they can purr.

How fast can they run?
Cheetahs can run at top speed faster than a car on the highway! (70MPH)
They can run super fast because unlike other big cats they have longer legs
and a leaner body
It is important that they can run fast because it can help them get away
from larger predators because they can barely fight with their small jaws.
Cheetahs are great runners but there heart is very small so it is hard for
them to run long distances.
