Here is some great news for newspapers that doesn't come from a newspaper organization. Capital One Small Business has released its Small Business Barometer survey results for the first quarter of 2011. The survey polls small businesses across the nation, gauging their current financial condition and business projections for the next six months. The survey also asked local businesses about their marketing strategy. Key findings include: Newspaper and other print ads are the most popular marketing tool among the small business sample, with 62 percent investing in this type of marketing. Finally, someone other than a newspaper organization has pointed out the strong relationship between small businesses and their local newspapers. Thank you, Capital One Small Business. Then we have the next two items. _______________________________________________ -- McClatchy closes Belton, Blue Springs papers (The Kansas City Star) -- The Belton Star Herald, which began more than a century ago, will print its last edition May 12. The Blue Springs Journal, a little more than three years old and produced by the same staff as the Lee’s Summit Journal, printed its last edition today, May 11. In notes to readers online, John Beaudoin, publisher of the Belton and Blue Springs papers, attributed the closings to the economy. News on the communities will continue to be covered in print and online by The Kansas City Star, the Lee’s Summit Journal and the Cass County Democrat Missourian of Harrisonville. All of the newspapers are owned by the McClatchy Co. The closings are part of the reductions The Star announced last week from its downtown and suburban operations. _______________________________________________ -- Wednesday Sun closing (kansascity.com) -- The Wednesday Sun in southwest Kanas City, one of several regional newspapers published by NPG Newspapers Inc., based in St. Joseph, will deliver its last publication May 25 before suspending operations to reassess the market. Lee Sawyer, chief operating officer at NPG, said the weekly publication — delivered free — will “be taking a step back to see what is a better fit for that marketplace.” The Wednesday Sun editor was let go and other staff members are being reassigned, Sawyer said. _______________________________________________ -- Get involved as an MPA Officer/Director Missouri Press is taking nominations/applications for officers and directors for 2012. Nielsen tracks destinations that turn up as few as five times. During the study period: 'In no case did five people click on a single ad on (a single) news site.' "That is consistent with studies showing clickthrough rates on banners are lower than low -- 0.1 percent to 0.04 percent by various measures. You could also say, as many do, that the benefit, if any, of a banner or bigger display unit at an online news site is the quick impression it makes without a click."
