Mickey Mouse was born in 1928, so he isn’t very young today, but all children all over the world still love him and his adventures.
His creator was Walt Disney (1901-1966), who made him a superstar: in fact, what child in the world has never heard of Mickey
Mouse? Or what child has never seen a Disney animated cartoon? After Mickey Mouse, a number of other characters followed:
Donald Duck, Pluto the dog, Minnie Mouse, and others who soon became popular all over the world.
Walt Disney can be considered the real king of cartoons. He produced famous animated cartoons which today can be considered
“classics”, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Robin Hood, The Sword in the Stone, but his company still makes
successful animated cartoons, such as the recent The Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Finding Nemo. However, while the old
cartoons were entirely hand-made, the modern ones are made with the help of computers. In 1955 Walt Disney created
Disneyland, in California. It is an amusement park that has become one of the main tourist attractions in the USA and is so
peculiar because it is like a real town with all the places and the characters of Disney’s films. After Disney’s death, his company
created Disneyworld, another amusement park in Florida, but today children in Europe can also visit Eurodisney, an enormous
park of this kind recently built in France, near Paris.

When did all begin? It all started in Chicago in 1885, when the architect William Le Baron Jenney built the first skyscraper thanks
to new structural and architectural methods. Then, after the invention of the elevator and the technology of the steel it became
possible to build very high buildings.
The question “Which is the highest skyscraper in the world” is still today very common. The highest building in the world is the
Sears Tower, in Chicago, which is 441.96 metres high, but perhaps the Empire State Building is still the most famous American
skyscraper: it is almost 400 metres high, it has 102 floors, 73 elevators and 1860 steps, and its shape characterises the New York
skyline.
Modern skyscrapers have not only offices or hotel rooms, but also shops, cafés, apartments, and other facilities which make them a
sort of “city within a city”.

39- Reading Comprehension: Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
Slavery began in America in the seventeenth century, not long after the first settlers arrived. It formed the basis of the economy of
the southern states for two hundred years. The British sold goods to the African chiefs and took with them a great number of men
and women to sell them in America as slaves.
The journey across the Atlantic Ocean was terrible: it took several months and the slaves lived like cattle in the hold of the ships.
At the end of it there was a terrible life of hard work and humiliation in the great cotton plantations: they had no rights, they could
not leave the plantation without written permission, and marriages between them were illegal.
Although the slave trade was abolished in 1807, slavery continued until the end of the Civil War, when Abraham Lincoln declared
it officially illegal. However it was only after the great non-violent marches and demonstrations in the 1960s led by Martin Luther
King that social discriminations against the blacks began to diminish.
Many novels and films are set in the American cotton plantations. The most famous of all is surely Gone with the Wind: the book,
written by the American novelist Margaret Mitchell, was made into a movie which is probably the most famous film ever made.

1. Piercing has been around for several years, yet for the thousands of teenagers who get their ear, nose, lip or bel1y
done every year in the UK, piercing is still the ultimate way to customise your look.
2. “A piercing is a bit rebellious and shows you’re an individual” says Cynthya, 15. «It affects the way people see you
more than clothes or hair. It changes your body; adds Lisa, 16. «If I hadn’t had my bel1y button pierced” says Kate, 17,
«I wouldn’t have come across Angie, my boyfriend. I met him at the piercing studio»
3. But despite the growing number of piercees, «body modification» (as professional piercers call it) is still a taboo
for under 16s. UK law states it’s illegal for anyone under that ago to have their ears, nose, mouth pierced without their
parents’ consent. «I get up to ten teenagers a day coming into my studio, but I wouldn’t touch them without their
parents’ permission,» says piercer Zoo Ellis who works at the Cambridge Piercing Studio. «You see, some of the horror
stories you hear about piercing aro true. Unsterilised equipment can spread viruses such as hepatitis and HIV. If you’re
not given advice or fail to look after your piercing, infections can soon set.»
4. Sylvia, 14 ran into problerns over her navel piercing. «I wanted to look cool for my summer holiday, so I had my
bel1y done. But I didn’t look after my piercing properly (as the piercer had suggested) and I got a bad infection. If only
I had listened to my parents or to my piercer’s advice. Now I wish I hadn’t had my belly button pierced.»
5. So, if you’re 100% convinced you want to go ahead with a piercing, just discuss your piercing plans with your
parents, then pick a studio with a certificate from the local council and make sure that the piercer wears gloves and
sterilises all the equipment. After that check the aftercare advice and ask for a leaflet to take home. Follow the
instructions to the letter.
