Great Books
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8am-8:50am
.5 elective credit
Grade: 9, 10, 11, and 12
Prerequisite: None
Course Description: If you enjoy reading, take this course!!!!! The vision of this course is to allow students time to research genres, authors, styles, themes etc. that intrigue or
interest them and find novels that correspond to these interests. Likewise, this course is designed to connect with other content areas. Students are often fascinated with topics and
units in other classes but often lack the time to research and read additional texts. This course will allow students time to conduct the research and read novels that connect them
with ideas and concepts explored in their Science, Social Studies, Outdoor Leadership, Art, Music, Drama and English classes, to name a few.
On a formal note, this course is designed for avid and ambitious readers. Success in this course will require students to read independently and to be self-motivated as we meet as a
class only three days a week. Students will not only select their own literature, students will also be required to write proposals that justify and explain why literary selections meet
course expectations and requirements. Finally, students should anticipate culminating/end of novel projects and writing assignments that will range from formal essay writing to
creating book trailers and/or class presentations.
