Drawing from her formal training, as well as a background in both set decoration and residential design, Christina incorporates historical with new to create unique interiors. Entrada: Walking into the Entrada, you are greeted with rich tones of twilight taupe and terra cotta. Sustainability being very important, the flooring will be kept original, as well as the stair railing. To peak interest, natural elements, including petrified wood, geodes and touches of flora, will be incorporated through the design area. The feeling is inviting and interesting. Main Staircase: The Main Staircase will be decorated with original art works from local artists, including Ron Pastucha. The tile on the risers, original to the home, will be exposed slightly while a deep blue runner leads you to the Upstairs Gallery Upstairs Gallery: Away from the Entrada, the Upstairs Gallery is meant to be more playful. While the integrity of the design is still represented with natural elements and greenery, the seating arrangement off the stairway is a more modern comfortable look. Powder Room: The Powder Room’s focus will be the vibrant tile walls, with minor improvements such as new fixtures and flooring. To really make the walls stand out, 1” white hex tiles (which is what would have originally been the flooring) will be adorned with dark blue drop-in tiles. It is meant to be a mix of classic and new. 1 Living Room Henry Johnstone & Co. | Albert Janz, IIDA, CID | Sherry Stein, Allied Member ASID 16 South Oakland Avenue, Suite 208 | Pasadena, CA 91101 | Phone: 626.395.9575 Albert’s Cell: 626.818.6469 | Home: 626.396.9903 Albert’s Fax: 626.395.9528 |Sherry’s Cell: 626.840.1926 | henryjohnstoneco@aol.com Bio: 2012 marks the 15th year that Henry Johnstone & Co. has participated in Pasadena Showcase House. Master Suite/Sitting Room/Balcony / His and Her Closet / Master Bath: The design creates tranquil suite with mostly neutral, taupe and cream accented with blue tones. It is a striking contrast to the soft neutral plastered walls and the boldness of the Kashmir blue and white print curtain and canopy of the Spanish colonial four-poster bed. Luxurious cream “Frette” linens are on the bed. Darker toned furniture mixes with soft subtle linen fabrics. A seating area and writing desk complete the space. The ceiling is decorated with a stenciled design reminiscent of old world Spain. The sitting room is dedicated to comfort. A new limestone mantle surround adds warmness to the space with a seating area nearby and a quilted chaise piled with pillows, an invitation for tea or to relax and immerse yourself in a wonderful book. A remodeled bathroom featuring a new stylish square stand-alone bathtub replaces the built-in. Gleaming nickel fixtures, a striking contrast against the marble and tile. The walls are covered with an appealing mix of white, chocolate brown and taupe Spanish Moroccan tiles and the beautiful marble slab combine all the colors of the tiles. The shower and toilet room were decreased in size to allow more space in the room. A closet was removed to create a separate his and her cabinet and vanity. Blue accents add a splash of color to the space. Lady’s Office KMNelson Design, LLC. I have proposed additional painting details to border the ships and on the ceiling beams by artist Ken Moffatt which will have the feeling of chart or book illuminations. The room was used to house spill over guests so the idea of travel and the high seas will be used as a theme through the space. The artwork will be hung from custom art rails using ropes and different sailing knots. Playing up the Moorish details found in the existing architecture of this historic home, hand painting the floor in three shades of patina green in a Moorish tile pattern boldly offers a modern perspective. The walls, casework and trim are all painted in patina green to open up the space. Cork wall covering is applied to the ceiling and backs of the bookcases that flank the focal point of this space, a custom daybed with trundle to made to look like three oversized stacked floor pillows. Design Mark Cutler has been featured in Metropolitan Home, Better Homes & Gardens, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and many other magazines and newspapers. Casita: The Casita, as envisioned by Mark Cutler, is a fantastic get away that captures both the feeling of early California and the curated eye of a collector. Embodying Cutlers’ philosophy of “the Luxury of Simplicity,” the suite of rooms is intended to look like an effortless assemblage that brings together both traditional and modern elements in unexpected ways. The first thing that visitors will notice is the bold use of color, with turquoise painted wood floors running throughout the suite to create unity between the four rooms, yet provide a foundation for each individual scheme. The Great Room is a study in the way a small space can still provide for multiple uses. The entry vestibule is created by using a banquette seating block to guide the visitor into the room, where the new Kitchenette juxtaposes the old world charm of below counter drapery and open shelving with modern elements like a poured-in-place concrete sink. Dinnerware provided by Heath Ceramics reinforces ties to early California design of the 1920’s. The Dining area features a vinyl banquette that playfully references the old burger joints California is famous for. The adjacent seating area is anchored by a TV display fashioned from a repurposed artist’s easel, along with an eclectic collection of vintage and new furniture pieces that complete the feel of a collected grouping that encompasses both modern and traditional elements. The color palette in the Great Room is emphasized by the multi-colored and stylized floral print adorning the windows and upholstery that draws from the same colors. Of particular note are the vintage early American blankets that have been repurposed as upholstery sources. Located through a sliding barn-style door, the Main Bedroom is anchored by a vintage bobbin bed that is flanked by mismatched bedside tables and low hanging cage ceiling lights. A festive multicolored cotton print is quilted and used as a bed cover, while a chocolate open weave fabric with a hot pink lining is used for window coverings. At the foot of the bed is an industrial-inspired desk made from aged iron and antique wood paired with a Thebes stool underneath. The continued mix of styles in this room contributes to the feel of an artistic sensibility within the retreat. 11 The last room features a built in bed niche with a chalk back wall for those middle of the night strokes of inspiration. Accents such as an oversized shearling bean bag chair, vintage sconces and open shelving featuring a variety of teenage collectables round out this casually curated design.
