St. George’s University School of Arts & Sciences Fall 2006 Semester Course Title: BIOL 441 - Physiology Textbook: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, 10th Edition G.T. Tortora & S.R. Grabowski Credit: 3 Credits Course Director: Dr. Theodore Hollis, Dean, School of Arts & Sciences Assessment Procedure: Mid-term examinations (2) Prerequisites: Grade System: 40 Pts. each Final examination 60 Pts. General Biology Percentage 95-100 90-94 85-89 80-84 75-79 70-74 65-69 Below 65 Grade A+ A B+ B C+ C D F Unit is designed to review and develop student understanding of physiology Course Description: This is a 3 credit hour lecture course designed to provide a fundamental basis for understanding mammalian physiology, especially human physiology, for students of biological science, premedical and other allied health sciences. It presupposes a basic understanding of life sciences, physical sciences and mathematics. General Objectives: At the end of this course, you should be able to: - name each of the major organ systems and list their homeostatic functions - describe the mechanism(s) of action of each system - diagram the negative feedback loops regulating each systems function - integrate activity of each organ system with the activity of all other systems Attendance: The course is lecture-centered and attendance is required. Examinations and Grading: Your final grade is determined by your performance on three (3) exams: The two MID-TERM examinations will include material completed prior to those examinations. The FINAL examination will include material completed after the mid-term examinations. It is expected, however, that you will be able to integrate basic material covered throughout the course in order to answer questions, especially on the final examination. Letter grades will be assigned according to the following ranges: Total points = 100 Percentage 95-100 90-94 85-89 80-84 75-79 70-74 65-69 Below 65 Grade A+ A B+ B C+ C D F BIOLOGY 441 (Physiology) Fall 2006 Semester SCHEDULE OF CLASSES – REVISED AS OF OCTOBER 10, 2006 9:00 – 9:50 a.m. Venue: Date Aug 21 23 25 28 30 Sept 01 04 06 08 11 13 15 18 20 22 25 27 29 Oct 02 04 06 09 13 16 18 19 20 23 25 27 30 Nov 01 03 06 08 10 13 15 17 20 22 24 27 29 Dec 01 Tent. 06 Day Week Session B 2 A (Building B, 2nd floor, at the back of Bourne Hall) Topic Reading* Presenter Mon 1 Introduction to Physiology 1 Wed 1 2 Excitable tissues 12 Fri 3 Resting and Action Potentials 12 Mon 4 Receptor and Synaptic Potentials 12 Wed 2 5 Physiology of Muscle I 10 Fri 6 Physiology of Muscle II 10 Mon 7 Brain & Spinal Cord I 13, 14, 17 Wed 3 8 Brain & Spinal Cord II 13, 14, 17 Fri 9 Brain & Spinal Cord III 13, 14, 17 Mon 10 Autonomic Nervous System 13, 14, 17 Wed 4 11 Visual System I 13, 14, 17 Fri 12 Visual System II 13, 14, 17 Mon 13 MIDTERM REVIEW Wed 5 14 FIRST MIDTERM EXAM.
