TLAC Minutes, meeting of Friday, April 20, 2007, 8:30am, Whitman Commons
Present: Barb Coleman, Dave Bonsall, Keith Ellis, Jill Leonard, Bob Marlor, Dave
Powers, Russell Prather, Judy Puncochar, Carol Steinhaus, Carol Strauss
Meeting opened with minute of silence in memory of the students and faculty who died
at Virginia Tech.

Reports, updates, discussion topics
a. Judy is about to submit the TLAC final (annual) report to the Academic
Senate. Fred Joyal has been very pleased with the activities and offerings
sponsored by TLAC, and he has approved $10,000.00 for our 2007-08
TLAC budget.
b. Adding sponsors' names to 2006-07 TE’s. Motion to approve

c. Budget (Carol Steinhaus): Approx $4,000.00 in account, however
invoice for John Blattner not yet received. Please turn in any bills to
Carol Bergmann.
i. Note: although refreshments were ordered for the April TE
(Classroom Preparedness, nothing was produced aside from tea
bags—Conf & Catering should not be paid for refreshments
d. April TE (Classroom Preparedness): session was taped, will be on
website (had first to be reviewed by univ lawyer); front page article in
Mining Journal; good info & discussion by Dean of Students (Chris Greer)
and head of Counseling Services (Tom Stanger).
i. Important point to dispense and reiterate – whatever the
concern – report it! Faculty/staff need not try to figure out which
precise office—whether you report a concern to the Dean of
Students, Public Safety, Counseling, Equal Opportunity Office,
etc, the concern will be directed to the appropriate office.
ii. Question: what if student complains about faculty reporting
concern, i.e., privacy rights invaded – response from univ lawyer:
univ more concerned with potential wrongful death than with
infringement of rights
iii. Questions raised re preparedness for emergency event such as
that at Virginia

e. New TLAC members appointed
i. Marcus Robins and Alan Beauchamp will join the committee Fall

Teaching Engagements 2007-08
i. Keith will make the poster for fall’s events including January.
He needs information by 3rd week of July for distribution by
the start of school
ii. Ideas for 07-08
1. UNITED conference – TLAC diversity – September 24 – 25
– Judy as liaison
2. Academic Service Learning – October – Research and
Publishing Opportunities – Dave Bonsall as liaison
3. November 6 is plagiarism – with Chris Greer – Dave
Powers as liaison
4. No session in December
5. Sigma Xi – Research and student learning, making the link
– in January – Bob Marlor is considering being the liaison
for this session
6. How the Students Use the Laptop – YouTube, Facebook,
My Space, Xanga, Instant Messaging, etc. – Kathy Saville
as liaison
7. We will continue to review the Magna Webinars.
8. Spring session on Internationalization to focus on
opportunities for faculty to teach abroad (most applications

due Aug through Oct for following academic year) – Carol
Strauss as liaison
iii. Judy will ask the President’s office to promotion the Teaching
Engagements at convocation
g. TLAC Website – Keith – $2,000 devoted to the website
h. Grants – (Jill, Dave P, Kathy) – Thanks given to the three TLAC members
for working on the TLAC Conference Grants Subcommittee.
i.
Other – Carol Steinhaus, Jill Leonard and Russ Prather were thanked for
their service to TLAC.

Good of the Order
i. EQUITY Conference Update – March 25-27 – went very well
k. Tentative Scheduled Meeting Dates & Times – Use the same time and
place next year (?) Sep 7, Oct 19, Nov 9, Dec 7, Jan 25, Feb 8, Mar 14, &
Apr 18 at 8:30am in Whitman Commons (136)
