CAHPERD Report – Board of Directors Meeting May 2005 Heather Willoughby Highlights The May meeting was held prior to CAHPERD conference in Moose Jaw. Board of Directors participated in a strategic planning session held at the June meeting to clarify/develop strategic outcomes for the future. Garth Turtle from PEI is President with Grant McManes as the new President Elect. The CAHPERD Executive Director, Guy Tanguay resigned so this position will be advertised in the near future. Council of Province’s next meeting is June 16th -18th in Québec City and StHyacinthe QDPE - The new QDPE Brochure and Assessment Tool have been designed, and are available online or from the office by visiting www.cahperd.ca / www.acsepld.ca The secondary school award has completed its review and will be instigated for the 2005 – 06 RAP school year. This award is intended and designed for secondary schools to receive recognition for their quality physical education programs. The target release date for the new K-6 resource called Health Education, Assessment and Reward Tools (H.E.A.R.T.) is September 2005. QSH - The latest issue “Bullying Prevention” is now available on the QSH clipboard, and “Tobacco Use Prevention” has also been translated into French and posted in the membership portal. A National Intramural Strategy Workshop to renew the CIRA programming will be held as part of the Council of Provinces meeting on June 17-18, 2005, St-Hyacinthe (QC). Mike Weekes will be representing Manitoba. CUPR – The Editing for Avante is moving from Regina to Brock University. The following outlines some key points from each province: BC: ITGFU conference will be held in Vancouver, 2008 in conjunction with CAHPERD. Ministry of Education is likely to release the revised PE curriculum in June, ready to be piloted in September '05. Douglas College is launching in Fall 2005 a new Physical Education Instruction Program specially designed for qualified teachers who have a passion for PE, but no formal training in the discipline. BC has an initiative called Action Schools which requires schools to develop individualized school action plans to promote healthy living. Project now has 430 schools registered and growing. AB: K-8 Schools will be required to implement Daily Physical Activity (DPA), not daily PE, in September 2005. SK: Resolution calling for mandatory physical education from K-12 is being presented to the Minister of Learning. Saskatchewan is celebrating their 100th Birthday. Hosted the CAHPERD conference at University of Regina. MB: Indications are that there will be an announcement from the Minister of Healthy Living related to the Healthy Kids, Healthy Future Task Force Consultations before the end of June. 4 CAHPERD presentations were made to the U of Winnipeg and U of Manitoba to over 140 students. ON: No news on how the government will mandate 20 minutes of daily physical activity per day in schools. QU: Hosting a Grand Ball of Sport and P.E. Their goal is to make 120 minutes of P.E. a reality. They are looking at ways to monitor schools to ensure they are offering the required amount in September 2006. NB: The Healthy Kids Toolkit was launched on March 18th. This is on online resource centre ( www.healthytoolkit.ca) designed by a research group from the University of New Brunswick and funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada. It is touches on four relevant topics – Active Living; Healthy Eating; Physical Education; Personal and Social. A new educational Internet site has been developed for Francophone students (ages 13 to 25) with five modules and is available at www.adosante.org. A new grade 11 optional PE course for the Francophone sector has been developed. The growth and development section of the Anglophone Health Education curriculum for grades 6, 7 and 8 has undergone a thorough review over the last four months strengthening the abstinence message. Premier Bernard Lord has announced a $2 million grant for the first year of a multi-year wellness strategy entitled Healthy Living for Children and Youth which will target children and youth to promote healthy behaviour and help prevent illness. PEI: The PEI Healthy Eating Alliance launched its new website. New P.E. Consultant has been hired. NS: Discussions with the NS Department of Education Curriculum Coordinator regarding the replacement of a physical education consultant with an ‘Active Healthy Living Consultant, are ongoing. “The Year of Sport and Physical Education” is being promoted throughout all schools in NS. NL: Students will be required to complete two credits (a full year) of P.E. during the senior high school years (Grade 10-12). There is continued curriculum development and implementation to replace existing curricula. Two new courses for grade 11 in 2005 with two more again for grade 12 in 2006. The Healthy Students Healthy Schools initiative is launched.
