 Approaches to Evaluation and Dissemination
Dr Marilyn Hammick is a Research and Education Consultant whose work includes
consultancy to UK Universities awarded Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning status
by the Higher Education Funding Council for England; Health Canada funded interprofessional
education initiatives and the UK Department of Health’s Creating an Interprofessional Workforce
project. She advises on educational systematic review work, is Consultant to Best Evidence
Medical Education (BEME) and is Research and Evaluation Consultant to the UK Higher
Education Academy Health Sciences and Practice Subject Centre.
This workshop will explore some fundamental issues facing the evaluation of education
initiatives and apply these to the context of the participants’ current work. Potential discussion
points include evaluation planning, ethics and governance, stakeholder involvement, selecting a
methodology and data collection methods, insider/outside researcher status and pilot studies.
 The Power of the Visual in Evaluation
Dr Paul Martin is Centre Manager for the CETL in Creativity, based in the School of
Engineering at the University of Brighton. He has been a Senior Advisor for the Higher
Education Academy supporting HEFCE funded national projects in learning and teaching and
helped to set up the CETL Initiative. He is an educationalist, has taught Fine Art and
Management Development is a practicing artist and founder member of the Artist’s Open
Houses in the Brighton Festival.
This practical session will explore the potential of the visual in evaluation ranging from the use
of visual evaluation techniques to the evaluation of visual phenomena. Colleagues will be
encouraged to share experiences and ideas and bring any relevant evaluation issues to the
group.
 Appreciative Inquiry and Organisational Change
Bryony Lamb has used AI within a variety of settings, including the DH funded ‘Creating an
Interprofessional Workforce’ programme. Having recently left HE, she works freelance as an
independent consultant in interprofessional education and teamwork, has recently been
appointed an Honorary Principal Lecturer post at Kingston St George’s, University of London,
and is abstracts editor for the Journal of Interprofessional Care.
This workshop will draw on experiences of using AI for research and projects involving
organisational change, to discuss the advantages and challenges of using the approach and
provide CETL delegates with the opportunity to briefly experience the AI process.
 Evaluating the Virtual Learning Environment and e-Learning
Frances Deepwell’s work includes developing the institution-wide delivery of WebCT and
providing support to academic colleagues across the University of Coventry, in the use and
evaluation of online learning technologies. Since September 2003 she has become course
leader for the Pg Certificate in Learning and Teaching and a member of the Postgraduate
programme team. Frances is also responsible for the Embedding Learning Technologies
programme (a SEDA recognised professional development award) and has recently gained a
Fellowship of SEDA (the Staff and Educational Developers Association).
In her biography she indicates that her current research interests lie in the evaluation of
managed learning environments and associated educational developments, in particular with
regard to institutional change. She is the institutional co-ordinator of EQUEL, a European
research project on e-quality in e-learning in higher education.
