PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSPECTION:
A. Examine surfaces designated to receive work described in this section for conditions adversely affecting the finished work. Repair or replace surfaces not meeting tolerances or quality requirements imposed within specifications governing substrate construction prior to installation of this work. Remove materials which create an uneven substrate for tile installation. Patch depressions, and smooth out the substrate using flexible floor patch material capable of forming a feathered edge.
B. Conditions of surfaces to receive tile:
1. Surfaces to be firm, dry, clean, and free of oily or waxy films.
2. Grounds, anchors, plugs, hangers, bucks, electrical and mechanical work in or behind tile shall be installed prior to proceeding with tile work.
C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 WATERPROOFING AND CRACK-SUPPRESSION MEMBRANE
INSTALLATION
A. Install waterproofing to comply with ANSI A108.13 and membrane manufacturer's written instructions to produce waterproof membrane of uniform thickness bonded securely to substrate.
C. Install edge guard where tile flooring abuts different flooring material and is subject to foot or wheel traffic.
B. Verify that finishes of substrates comply with tolerances and other requirements specified in other Sections and that substrates are free of cracks, ridges, depressions, scale, and foreign deposits that might interfere with adhesion of floor tile.
20136-GNTC/ADA 09310-4
Ceramic and Quarry Tile
B. Install crack-suppression membrane to comply with manufacturer's written instructions to produce membrane of uniform thickness bonded securely to substrate.
C. Do not install tile over waterproofing until waterproofing has cured and been tested to determine that it is watertight.
3.3 MOISTURE TESTING: Perform tests on substrates where tile has been removed and on new concrete slabs, as recommended by flooring manufacturer and as follows. Proceed with VCT installation only after substrates pass testing, with a maximum moisture-vapor-emission rate of 3 lb of water/1000 sq. ft. in 24 hours. Taylor CaCl Test Kit, American Moisture Test, or approved equal.
3.4 TILE INSTALLATION:
A. Center tile in spaces with tile of equal widths at opposing walls.
B. Cut and drill tile and trim shapes accurately without damage. Rub exposed, cut edges smooth with abrasive stone.
C. Joints in floor tile shall be perpendicular and parallel to walls.
D. Grind and fit tile carefully at intersections, against trim finish and at built-in fixtures and accessories. Closely fit around pipes, fixtures, and fittings so that plates, escutcheons and collars overlap cuts.
E. Thin set floor tile according to TCA Method F-113 over existing concrete floor. Install wall tile according to TCA Method W202. Comply with manufacturer's printed instructions for installation.
F. Coordinate with Hardware installer to set threshold at restroom doors using appropriate setting method. Set top edge of threshold flush with adjoining finish floor level.
3.5 CLEANING:
A. Upon completion of placement and grouting, clean tile installations as recommended by manufacturer of proprietary materials. Tile shall not be cleaned with acid solutions. After cleaning, flush with clean water. Leave finished installation clean and free of cracked, chipped, broken, unbonded, or otherwise defective tile work.
B. Protect installed tile work with Kraft paper or other heavy covering during the construction period to prevent damage and wear.
