April 2013 Newsletter www.hooksettkiwanis.org Hooksett NH website: www.hooksettkiwanis.org “Serving the Children of the World” www.hooksettkiwanis.org President Dave’s Message Greetings from Myrtle Beach. Kathy and I were pretty excited when we missed that last snow storm to hit NH the third week of March. I think we can all agree that our wells and reservoirs will have plenty of water this summer. I promise you warm weather is right around the corner! I hope many of you have plans to join us for the 4th annual Community Leaders Recognition Event (CLE) on Saturday, April 20 at the SNHU dining hall. This event serves two purposes: the first is to allow our club to recognize those individuals who made significant contributions to our community in 2012: the second purpose is that CLE is the start of the three major fund raising activities we have planned for 2013. Thanks for all you do to make Hooksett a better place--- Happy EasterWelcome New Member: Heritage Family Credit Union Corporate membership. Heritage’s presence in the Hooksett Community continues to grow. It recently opened a beautiful new facility on Hooksett Road near the entrance to Campbell Hill. Primary contact person will be Matt Sullivan. Heritage’s sponsor is Judy Barrett. Community Leaders Recognition Event Our 4th annual Community Leaders Recognition event will be held on April 20 at the Dining Center at Southern NH University. Tickets are available from Dave Dickson or Deb Charest. Tickets are $50 each or $320 for a table of 8. Dinner choices are baked haddock or chicken marsala. At this event we will recognize the following: Business Leader: Jack Solloway Large Business: Public Service of NH Small Business: Blue Ribbon Fence/Landscaping Educator: Kevin Fleury (Cawley Middle School) Municipal: Captain Jon Daigle, Hooksett PD Youth Volunteer: Vera Lee, Central High School Adult Volunteer: Mike Horne The CLE committee under the leadership of Fred Bishop and Deb Campbell has been meeting since December to put this event together. I need to acknowledge the efforts of Sid Baines, Frank Kotowski, Ray Prouty, Tom Young, Matt Barrett, Mark Sanborn, Sue Willey and myself to put all of the pieces together to put on a first class event just like the previous three. Please contact Deb Charest at 485-3821 to purchase tickets and join us for a great event. As you know fund raising is the fuel needed to keep the engine running for all the activities we support as a club. Two additional quick updates: Schedule of Upcoming Club Meetings: April 3, 2013 at 6:00PM in the Penman Room at Southern NH University. Our speaker will be Dr. Brian Gilchrist, director of the new Children’s Hospital at the Elliott. Dr. Gilchrest was formerly the director of the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center at New England Medical Center in Boston. We will also have the Division 7 caucus at this meeting with other clubs in attendance. Our inter club initiative under the leadership of Katie Orlando is still going strong and please consider joining us for one of our visits. The trails committee under the leadership of John Pieroni will be holding trails clean up in early May. 1 May 1, 2003 at 6:00PM in the Penman Room at Southern NH University. Our speaker will be new Hooksett Police Chief Peter Bartlett. This will also serve as our Annual meeting where officers and directed will be elected for 2013-2014. club, Aktion Club and two Builders Clubs. Both of the clubs we visited are quite strong and perform numerous service projects and collectively raise over $200,000 each year. The Kiwanis club of Palm Beach meets weekly for lunch while the new Young Professionals Club meets twice a month. With both clubs, over 80% of the members are active working on service projects and attending meetings. Membership in the Young Professionals Club is geared towards men and women in their 20s and 30s. Joint Project of Hooksett Lions and Kiwanis On March 16 the Hooksett Lions Club, Hooksett Kiwanis, Central Key Club and Small Smiles Dental Centers hosted a Vision, Hearing and Dental Screening Clinic attended by 30 children at the Hooksett Town Offices. Kiwanis members volunteering were Sue Willey, Deb Charest, Katie Orlando, Judy Barrett, Vivian Kotowski and Joan McDonald. Activities included dental puppets, DJ Z Small Smiles Zebra with free toothbrushes, Easter Bunny, face painting, Hooksett Fire Department fire truck, Hooksett Police Department crime van, new cruiser & McGruff. The Kids Kloset was open during the entire event and had several families come through, some current, some new. In Aruba, it is quite prestigious to be asked to join Kiwanis. Both clubs have a waiting list of potential members. Not everyone interested in joining receives an application. New members are on “probation” for three months to ensure that they attend meetings and volunteer for the club’s projects. Costs of membership are quite a bit higher than Hooksett. Dues for the Young Professionals Club are $50 per month ($600 per year), and includes pizza or sandwiches at the club meeting. One question we were asked related to the ability to remove members who are not active. I also had the privilege of installing a newly elected director (see photos). Board Positions Open The Nominating Committee chaired by Tom Young is developing a slate of officers for the 2013-2014 administrative year, which begins on October 1, 2013. If you have interest in any of the following positions, please contact Tom at 625-5125 or smallguys@comcast.net. Vice President (would normally accede to club president in October 2015). Treasurer Assistant Treasurer Secretary Assistant Secretary Director: 4 positions, each with 2-year term Director: 1 position for 1-year term Kiwanis in Aruba One of the major benefits or “Interclubbing” and March Meetings Our first meeting in March was a snowy night and the speaker ended up being sick at the last minute. At the second meeting we had Lenny O'Keefe as the speaker. He gave a very informative program about the gangs that are present in the NH jail system as well as in the communities at large. He said that there is much gang activity in jail including drug trade and tattoos. He showed slides and identified various gangs by what they wear, what tattoos they have, and mannerisms. Gang affiliations start with children as young as 9 years. Some gangs include visiting other Kiwanis clubs, is learning about how other clubs operate. Ron and Irene Dion and Pauline and I recently had an opportunity to visit two of Aruba’s three Kiwanis clubs. Aruba is a county of about 100,000 people. The three clubs sponsor a Key Club, Circle K 2 Historian: Gabby Roy 8th Grade Rep: Kayla Pinard 7th Grade Rep: Garret Jackson elderly members, as part of generations of families. Lenny has trained many police officers and SROs in the school on how to identify gangs and how to counsel students before they become gang members. We will host a spaghetti dinner and movie night on April 12th (Time TBD). This will be open to the school and families. In May we will be having induction ceremonies for the new officers and reps, and will also start planning the LUKE 5K for 2013. Member Birthdays in April Seven members celebrate birthdays in April: Fred Bishop 2nd, Susan Willey 6th, Ron Dion 12th, Tim Sweeney 17th, Sid Baines 23rd, Gail McCarthy 24th, and Kevin Lane 25th Central Key Club Report by Chandler Tucker I am writing this with great sadness as this is my last Kiwanis newsletter article as Editor for the Manchester Central High School Key Club. I have made the decision for my senior year to participate in the writing of the Little Green, our school’s newspaper, CVN, or Central Vision News, and hopefully become a class officer. These past two years of being a board member have changed my life. Key Club gave me a home away from home; a place I knew I could express myself with a group of people who were as interested in helping the community as I am. I am happy to pass my position down to Briana Furtado, a freshman, who I hope will have to same outcome as I have. Cawley Builders Club by Angela Moquin The Cawley Middle School Builders Club started developing more of their ideas in the month of March. The Builders Club registered for the Rock n' Race to benefit the Concord Hospital Dayson Center for Cancer care. We will be participating in this event on May 16th. Some members also volunteered for the Easter egg hunt at the Hooksett Public Library. The Builders Club will be donated money to the Alzheimer's Association, Make a Wish Foundation, and the Jimmy Fund. Many of the members of the Cawley Builders Club have been volunteering at the Underhill School in our district. The members help teachers and students with any work that is needed to be done. Some members will also start helping the students in the Homework Club that need extra support with homework. The Homework Club volunteering will start up sometime soon. Have a great month everyone and enjoy some of this warmer weather! More importantly, preparations for DCON are in full swing. In just two weeks, we will be boarding the bus on our way to Springfield for a weekend of success, and learning. Each year we leave the convention knowing more about helping our club than ever imagined. Hopefully this year will be as helpful seeing as we have six new board members joining this May! Also, Saturday March 30 is the annual Egg Hunt at Stark Park in Manchester. Each year nearly half our club gathers in the early morning to hide thousands of eggs. Later in the day, the children of Manchester show their true colors and hunt for the prizes. We also provide face painting and snacks to any and every child. This event is a huge success every year! Hillside Builders Club by Tyler Burke. This month the Builders Club has been working on announcing the winners of the Luke Capistran sport’s camp scholarships. We raised $75 hosting a bake sale at the St Patrick’s Day dance which will go towards the 8th grade dance and field day. We also held Builders Club elections for 20132014. The Officers and Representatives elected are: President: Tyler Burke Vice President: Hanna Valez Treasurer: Lily O’Connell Secretary: Maggie Thornton I would like to thank every Kiwanis member for everything they do to make our club a success. I know there are so many kids that benefit from this club. Thanks again, and I’ll see you in the service! 3 Hooksett Community Food Pantry (HCFP) update by Barbara Brennan and Kevin Lane. Beginning in April we will be extending hours of operation by half an hour on Monday and Friday mornings (opening at 9:30), and Wednesday afternoon (opening at 3:30). One of our new volunteers (Kathie Brown) donated a commercial grade freezer to the pantry that she was not using. The HCFP would also like to replace the chest freezer this year, and will be in search of a good quality used one. In mid April, we will be upgrading the storage closet in the gym. We plan to utilize pantry and community volunteers to help with this project. Contact Barb at 674-3735 if you have time to help out. The next HCFP committee meeting is Wednesday, April 10 at 6:00 PM at the Hooksett Town Offices. Kevin Lane prepared the following charts and tables to illustrate Food Pantry Activity since its embracement by Hooksett Kiwanis in 2009. Also included is a chart and table showing food and cash donations for 2012. These illustrate the incredible growth of the Community Food Pantry and the generosity of local citizens and businesses. There were 15 families representing 46 children and about 300 pieces of clothes were taken. There were several volunteers helping to sort and hang clothes as well that night. We caught a sale on winter jackets at Walmart and bought 26 for $82. Mary Farwell will reimburse us through Salvation Army funds. She also provided us with $200 in February for socks and underwear. The next open house will be April 1. Young Children Priority One (YCPO) Committee by Becky Berk. The YCPO Committee now has 9 active Committee members, and a couple more people may join if we can change the meeting schedule to accommodate them. Some hard copies of the survey will be available shortly. We will close the survey at the end of April. We have 34 responses so far. Member bio: Katie Orlando Although Katie is a relatively new member of Hooksett Kiwanis, she is one of our most active members, acting as Kiwanis Advisor to the Central Key club and chairing our Interclub Committee. Interclub Contest by Katie Orlando We are off to a great start on our way to accomplish the Interclub challenges and awards for our District. As of March 19th our club has gone to 15 of our 31 scheduled meetings! Below are the Interclubs scheduled in April. Please consider joining us. I have also completed one year of a Masters program in Community Mental Health Counseling at SNHU. I live in Fremont, NH with my two kitties, Gingersnap and Meatball. Both of them are rescue kitties; Gingersnap was rescued from the Salem ARL in 2007 and Meatball recently discovered my deck in September 2012. I have a younger brother who lives in Boston and a grandfather (Papa) who is 85, still does his pushups and sit ups every morning, and lives in Hampstead, NH. I also have several relatives in Sicily (Italy) and Facebook helps us stay connected. I have worked in the non-profit field for over 10 years. During college summers I spent my time with the American Youth Foundation as an Office Assistant, Archivist, and Counselor. My first job out of college was at the Henry Outdoor Adventure Center (Newaygo, MI) as their Director of School Programs. After a year I was missing my New England roots, so I took a job at Chester College of New England as their Director of Student Affairs and 6 months later, also a Residence Director, moving onto campus and working 2 full-time jobs at the same time. I was at Chester for 4 years (leaving in 2009, before the institution closed) and took a job at UMaine Farmington as their Assistant Director of Residence Life. From there I decided that I wanted to try something different outside of higher education but still working with non-profits, so I took a position with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine and was fast-tracked through their organization. The last position I held for the agency was VP of Operations and I regretfully had to relocate back to NH to address ongoing health concerns and took a less demanding position at Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains. On April 1, I am returning to Big Brothers Big Sisters as Executive Director at the Greater Manchester agency. Road Race 2013 by Sue Willey I am once again going to chair the committee for the race on the Heads Pond trail, and am looking for a few good committee members to share in this responsibility. Below are the different aspects of this committee: Volunteers for water stops, timers, and shuttle coordination. Banners & signs for course and parking. Registration, starter/T shirts, bib coordination. Advertising, media and awards. Finish line, food, gift bags, raffle prizes. Trail preparation, cones and barricades. Permission from land owners. If you would like to help with any of these, please contact me at suewilley@comcast.net or call me at 485-3821. I would appreciate it. The first thing we need to do right away is secure a date and you don't need to be a committee member to weigh in on that. 5 Growing up I lacked positive adult role models and a consistent support network. At a young age I vowed to devout my life to being a positive mentor to others so that others could know what it would be like to feel supported, understood, and that they didn't have to feel like they were going through life alone. I have had the opportunity to serve in many non-profit roles and have made a difference to at least one at each organization. the volunteer roles I hold, and be part of their lives and personal growth. Hooksett Chamber of Commerce On Wednesday April 10, the Chamber will host a Business after hours networking event from 5:30pm - 7:30pm at Sovereign Bank 1252 Hooksett Road. Two Hooksett Kiwanis is may attend the event at no cost. Additional Kiwanians will need to pay $5.00. In my job with Girl Scouts I served as a Membership Manager, promoting the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to new girls and new volunteers in the organization. I was the face of the organization in south central NH and each day had meetings with community members, spoke to organizations and companies, and recruited at community events. In my job with the Girl Scouts I enjoyed working with and supporting our 5,500 adult volunteers and our 14,500 girls throughout NH and VT. I find that I am always learning new things from each person I work with, regardless of their age. With Big Brothers Big Sisters I am looking forward to working with the board members and staff members to get this agency to the next level, meeting the current Bigs and Littles and hearing about all of the impact they have had on each other's lives, and planning the agency's largest fundraiser, to be held on May 18th. Board Meeting Highlights On March 25, the Hooksett Kiwanis Club and Foundation boards held their monthly meetings. Several agenda items discussed are featured in various articles in this newsletter. A complete copy of the minutes will be found on our club website. Kiwanis Club of Hooksett The Treasurer’s report was approved. As of February 28, 2013 there was $9,649.48 in the Administrative account. The Board learned that many essays have been received from SLP members, and appointed a panel of three members to judge the essays. Appointed Judy and Matt Barrett to serve as Club delegates to the Kiwanis International Convention. Appointed a committee chaired by Fred Bishop to update our club bylaws and develop a set of club policies. Hooksett Kiwanis Foundation The Treasurer’s report was approved. As of February 28, 2013 there was $18,072.49 in the Foundation account and $22,115.83 in the Food Pantry account. Discussed a proposed scholarship award and appointed a committee to develop criteria and possible bylaw amendments. Learned that the principal was unable to find a staff member willing to serve as Faculty Advisor to a K Kids Club at Hooksett Memorial School. My greatest skill areas are talent management and strategic planning and execution. My approach to forming professional relationships is genuine and natural, and this on top of my natural leadership and management skills helps me create an environment of respect and support with staff and volunteers. My ability to focus on the big picture without losing sight of the smaller details has allowed me to achieve unimaginable success for each organization I have served. I have completed several half marathons, marathons and ultra races, walking mostly, but still under the time limit! I enjoy ultra walking, kayaking, volunteering, hiking, swimming, playing with my kitties, baking, and writing my Blog (Thirty, Nerdy & Wordy).I have been a Kiwanian for 9 years and a Lion for 1 year. Few know that I know how to make balloon animals. The next board meeting will be held from 5:30PM – 7:00PM on April 22 at the Elliott Medical Center on Chambers Rd. in Hooksett. I really enjoy the opportunities I have had to advise student leadership programs. I was the Faculty Advisor of the Circle K at Chester College, the Faculty Advisor at the Circle K at UMaine Farmington, and now serve as the Kiwanis Advisor to the Manchester Central Key Club. I now work less directly with the people the organization serves and more with people in “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time”.
