It provides a platform for many talented amateur musicians and verse speakers of all ages, both for those especially gifted & for those who just want to learn how to give of their best. It gives the stimulus of preparing for a public occasion and an opportunity to listen and learn from the performance of other competitors. Most important is the constructive criticism, help and advice given by professional adjudicators which helps the competitors to improve their respective skills, and, of course, educates. It is not really important whether competitors achieve first, second or third places in a class, but the adjudicators’ remarks both on paper and in public give a sense of achievement and encourage development. Many of today’s professionals began by entering Competitive Festivals. Cornwall Music Festival is proud to name among its former competitors Sir David Willcocks, Wendy Eathorne, alan Opie and Benjamin luxon. 1 SPEECH A P PE A L F R O M TH E C O M M I T TE E Oxfordshire The closing date for entries is set as late as it possibly can be to allow for the annual gargantuan task of collecting, TISH NICOLL lGSM, Dip CE, MSTSD, FESB collating and typing up nearly a thousand entries, formulating a timetable, producing a programme and getting all to print in time for the Festival. When you photocopy without permission, you jeopardise the livelihoods of composers, publishers and music shops. You could also end up in court which would be very costly. So, support the music you enjoy: buy and use originals. They are clearer and easier to read, they last longer, and when you buy them you are supporting composers and publishers and are helping to keep a wide range of music available.
