EWC 4U: Final Culminating Activity – Long Narrative
For your final culminating activity you must outline and write sections of a long narrative. You
may choose any of the following forms of narrative:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
Novel
Play
Film Script
Factual Narrative (biography, narrative historical account etc.)
Epic Poem
Graphic Novel (this was NOT taught in class so only attempt if you know how to do it)
You must write the opening chapter (s) (scene, canto, book, however your narrative is divided)
and one or two other chapter(s), scene(s), canto(s), book(s), however your narrative is divided.
You must also outline all of the sections in between your written sections and from your final
written section to the end so that the plot is clear. You should also create other author’s notes
such as character bios, notes on important images, symbols etc. that will help you create the
narrative.
Your introductory chapter(s) etc. should be 5-10 pages. Your other chapter(s) etc. should total 810 pages. Therefore, you should have 16-20 pages of narrative plus your outline of the
intermediate chapters and your author’s notes. Novels should be double spaced. Play and film
scripts should be spaced according to the rules of play and film scripts.
As always with assignments in this course you may go over page limits, however, if your
narrative is not interesting I am not obligated to read past the page limit. If your work is less than
the minimum required number of pages your work will be deemed incomplete and will not be
evaluated and will be assigned a mark of zero. There will be no extensions for this assignment.
Assignments are due at the beginning of class on May 22. If you are not present on the day the
assignment is due you must submit your work electronically and bring the hard copy to me on
your first day back at school with a doctor’s note.
The second part of your assignment is a formal pitch/interview to an editor at a publishing
company. Your pitch/interview will last approximately 10-15 minutes. You will be asked
questions to outline the basic plot and characters and explain the literary value (themes, images,
symbols, relevance) of the text and the appeal (target audience, mass appeal etc.) of the text.
We will be working on the summative assignment from the end of April until the due date. The
presentations will start the class following the due date and end in June. Your attendance is
mandatory at every class during the summative schedule. If you have a legitimate reason for
missing (illness, field trip, school sports) you will have to sign the summative absence form and
may be required to provide documentation.
The summative schedule is as follows:
May 11-17 – Summative Work Periods
May 22 – Written Portion Due
May 24 – June - Presentations
