A nostalgic holiday tale laced with lyricism, wit and gentle charm. Set in Depression-era rural Alabama, this play of evocative memories follows Buddy (young Truman Capote) and his elderly cousin (Miss Sook) as they deal with the school bully, make fruitcake for Eleanor Roosevelt, cut down the perfect Christmas tree, and share a very special relationship. Cast: 2 women, 3 men (Ages negotiable) Miss Sook Falk (F, 40-70, playing age mid-60s): Buddy's special friend and cousin. Sook has never been outside the county she lives in. She is wonderfully eccentric, and she adores her nephew Buddy. "so childlike that she was thought to be retarded by many people; in fact she was merely so shy and unworldly as sometimes to appear simpleminded. . . She had never read anything but the Bible and Grimm's fairy tales . . . and she had never been to a movie." Truman (M, 40-60): The narrator and writer. Truman is Buddy as an older, more sophisticated man. He often presents wry comments on the story. Buddy (M, 14-24, playing age 7): Truman at seven, played by a young actor. Sent to live with his adult cousins in rural Alabama, Buddy is an outsider who prefers the company of his elderly cousin to his schoolmates. Man (M, any age): Actor playing Odd Henderson, Uncle B, Mr. Haha Jones, and other roles. Must be able to use voice and physical movement to portray difference characters. Woman (F, any age): Actress playing Jumbo Finchbur, Miss Armstrong, Mary Taylor, and other roles. Must be able to use voice and physical movement to portray difference characters.
