Required Readings for Ph.D. students with "Migration" as a secondary field Compiled by Dirk Hoerder (with additions by Brian Gratton and James Rush) as tentative list Students are required to read 100 books for their secondary field. In the case of "Migration" the list consists of a "general list" of 50 titles on issues of theory, methodology, global migration and acculturation, transcultural and transborder issues – to be read by all; and two individualized lists of 25 titles each for two major regions which will be developed by the area specialists for particular graduate students in the Ph.D. program. NOTE: the reading lists have been compiled form Dirk Hoerder's research and additions from several colleagues. They may be longer than the number of books required. With the concurrence of the advisors, students individually select the required number. For those macro-regions for which the reading list does not give the minimum required books, students add to the list with the help of their advisers. In the last two decades journals dealing with race, ethnicity, and acculturation have become numerous and appear in many countries. Conceptual approaches relevant to migration studies include among many others Arjun Appadurai, "Global Ethnoscapes: Notes and Queries for a Transnational Anthropology," in Richard Fox, ed., Recapturing Anthropology: Working in the Present (Santa Fe: School of American Research Press, 1991), 191-210; Pierre Bourdieu and Loic Wacquant, An Invitation to Reflexive Sociology (Chicago: Univ. of Chicago Press, 1992); Allen F. Paris: Seuil, 1997); Raymond Williams, Culture and Society, 1780-1950 (New York: Columbia Univ. Press, 1958). Other attempts at systematizing migrations include: James T. Fawcett and Fred Arnold, "Explaining Diversity: Asian and Pacific Immigration Systems," in Fawcett and Benjamin V. Cariño, eds., Pacific Bridges: The New Immigration from Asia and the Pacific Islands (Staten Island, N.Y., 1987), 453-73; A.L. Schwarzweller, "General Theory in the Study of Migration: Current Needs and Difficulties," Intl. Migration Rev. 3 (1968), 3-18. The systems approach to migration was first outlined by James H. Jackson, Jr., and Leslie Page Moch, "Migration and the Social History of Modern Europe," Historical Methods 22 (1989), 27-36. Important studies on migration policies – with an emphasis on control and exclusion – are Andreas Fahrmeir, Olivier Faron and Patrick Weil, eds., Migration Control in the North Atlantic World: The Evolution of State Practices in Europe and the United States from the French Revolution to the Interwar Period (New York: Berghahn Books, 2003) and Aristide Zolberg, A Nation by Design: Immigration Policy in the Fashioning of America (New York and Cambridge, Mass.: Russell Sage Foundation and Harvard University Press, 2006); Nancy Green and Francois Weil, eds., Those Who Leave: The Politics of Emigration (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2007). As regards refugee movements, the standard study is Michael R. Marrus, The Unwanted. European Refugees in the Twentieth Century (Oxford, 1985). Population deportations have been studies by Andrew Bell-Fialkoff's Ethnic Cleansing (New York, 1996) and Dariusz Stola, "Forced Migrations in Central European History," Intl. European Expansion, Colonialism, Imperialism The best study of the colonized world and the European impact is still Eric R. Wolf, Europe and the People without History (Berkeley, Cal.: Univ. of California Press 1982). Indentured servitude and free migrations in the World of the Indian Ocean have been ably summarized and interpreted by Hugh Tinker, A New System of Slavery: The Export of Indian Labour Overseas, 1830-1920 (London, 1974), and more recently by David Northrup, Indentured Labor in the Age of Imperialism, 1834-1922 (Cambridge, 1995). The best work on the human or inhumane aspects of indenture is Jan C. Breman and E. Valentine Daniel, "The Making of a Coolie," Journal of Peasant Stud. 19.3/4 (1992), 268-95, and Breman, Taming the Coolie Beast: Plantation Society and the Colonial Order in Southeast Asia (Delhi: Oxford, 1987) also available in Dutch, Chinese, and Indonesian, and Breman, Labour Migration and Rural Transformation in Colonial Asia (Amsterdam: Free Univ. Press, 1990). Scholars from India or of Indian cultural background have concentrated on specific aspects of the migrations: U. Bissoondoyal and S.B.C. Servansing, Walton Look Lai, M.S.A. Rao, to name only a few. Colonizer migrations to and labor migration within the colonized world have been studied in terms of hierarchies and construction as well as exploitation of "bodies" – since human beings were not what colonizers wanted – since the mid-1980s. The most prominent studies include, in sequence of publication: Ann L. Stoler, Capitalism and Confrontation in Sumatra's Plantation Belt 1870-1979 (New Haven, 1985); Ann L. Stoler, "Making Empire Respectable: The Politics of Race and Sexual Morality in 20thCentury Colonial Cultures," American Ethnologist 16 (1989), 634-60; Margaret Strobel, Gender, Sex, and Empire (Washington, D.C., 1993); Ann L. Stoler, Race and the Education of Desire: Foucault's History of Sexuality and the Colonial Order of Things (Durham N.C.: Duke, 1995); Mrinalini Sinha, Colonial Masculinity. A precursor of this approach in a trading rather than colonizing context was Sylvia Van Kirk, "Many Tender Ties:" Women in Fur Trade Society in Western Canada, 1670-1870 (Winnipeg: Watson, 1980). The connections between gender and sexuality and empire, colony, and nation have achieved major insights totally overlooked by both old-style histories of imperial expansion and imperialism as well as by Marxist approaches to economic formations and classes. Transatlantic Migrations Studies of transatlantic migration abound but to the 1970s scholars usually dealt with specific ethno-cultural groups, often pursuing the nation-to ethnic-enclave approach. Most provided group narratives but only little analysis and no comparative assessments. From the 1980s, numerous studies of migration in the Atlantic economies have appeared – thus privileging White migrants. The field of forced slave migration developed separately and acculturation of Africans in bondage in the Americas came to be studied even later. Slave cultures in Brazil because of direct arrival from Africa and numbers – in contrast to indirect arrival and population growth by pro-creation in the United States – provide the model case. From the 1990s a few scholars began to approach the White and the Black Atlantic as an interactive whole. But even European out-migration was often studies either as a west-north European movement to North America or as an IberianItalian movement to South America with migration to and within the Caribbean again a different research compartment. But a few comparative studies have begun to appear often starting from seeing the Atlantic World as an interactive economic sphere, see for example Alan L. Karras and John R. McNeill, eds., Atlantic American Societies. From Columbus through Abolition 1492-1888 (London, 1992). Hoerder, Dirk, ed., Labor Migration in the Atlantic Economies. Sinke, eds., A Century of Migrations, 1830-1930 (Urbana: Univ. of Illinois Press, 1991) reflects the advances in North America-centered research. Walter Nugent's Crossings: The Great Transatlantic Migrations, 1870-1914 (Bloomington, Ind. 1992) achieves comparative approach to four European sending societies and four receiving societies in the Americas. Donna Gabaccia, Italy’s Many Diasporas (London and Seattle: University College of London and University of Washington Press, 2000), studies on group of migrants globally. A similar study for the global migrations of Poles is not available. West, West Central, North and South Europe Bade, Klaus J., Pieter C.
