Most of the work is done in collaboration with one or more FSI firms, which typically supply the data for the studies. Productivity, efficiency and effectiveness in the services industries are the major focus of our research interests. This includes the examination of productivity measures for independent Decision Making Units ("DMU") within an FSI organisation. Such groups include software development teams, branch employees and management, loan portfolio lending teams, credit rating of corporate loans etc. This area of research involves Data Envelopment Analysis ("DEA") methodologies and modelling of the DMUs in the FSI corporations. Other potential applications of DEA includes the study of engineering teams in a communications carrier; evaluation of the performance of mutual fund managers over time; productivity based prediction of corporate failure of public companies; performance evaluations of the Property & Casualty Insurance industry; Efficiency study of the Life insurance industry; and the study of Credit Unions' economic performance in Ontario. New theoretical approaches in DEA applications are the subject of several Ph.D. level researchers, such as the ranking of frontier resident DMUs; corrections for inherent data errors; negative and inverse DEA. User friendly GUI for use by practitioners designing DEA solutions, computer programs to solve large and complex DEA models are also under development. Our research also involves the examination of economic returns on Information Technology investments. The FSI members spend as much as a billion dollars per annum in this area and their returns on this investment have never been accurately determined. Additional areas of interests include: a. New approaches to testing large-scale software developments prior to installation. This work also includes the evaluation of cost reduction opportunities. b. Development of a quality approach to software development, effects of time to market pressure and cost containment are also involved. c. Technological Change as a Competitive Weapon - Rapid advances are being made in pattern recognition, image processing, expert systems, communications networks, voice/data transmission, copying, data storage/retrieval, word processing, printing and office automation and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). d. Development of a set of standard metrics for software development programs for large computer users. e. Evaluation of the effects of risk (technological, environmental, economic, competitive etc.) in technology investments. We have a deep interest in the rapidly emerging e-Commerce field. Research is being conducted in the on-line banking segment and in the arbitrated commerce area. This work comprises of the development of e-Commerce strategy in an on-line market where both buyer and seller “deal” simultaneously. Much work is oriented towards the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and inherent technological and human factors issues. 22 Canadian Academic Collaboration 1. Professor Carole Chauncey at Ryerson University is collaborating on a research project into software testing technologies and methodologies. 2. Professor Teresa Menzies at Brock University is collaborating on research projects into the outcomes of former graduates of the Entrepreneurship courses given by me at the University of Toronto. 3.
