Unfortunately Winky’s parents do not share her new passion. When the pony falls ill and must be put to sleep, Winky decides to want a pony of her own. Knowing her parents would never get her one, Winky learns at school about Saint Nicholas, an old bearded man who rides on a horse and gives presents to good children, on his birthday the fifth of December. Winky knows what she wants from him, a horse, of course!! She has to be ‘good’ and get ready for her horse! When Saint Nicholas arrives at her school and gives her a toy, Winky is heartbroken. She storms out of her classroom only to find, tied to her bike parked at the school yard, a big white beautiful horse!! ‘‘Saint Nicholas did give me a horse!’’ She rides it home, unaware of the chaos and drama that will immediately follow… 6. The international success of Winky’s Horse asks for an explanation about the Dutch tradition of Saint Nicholas celebration. History According to the tradition Saint Nicholas was the bishop of Myra (near modern Finike, Turkey) sometime in the 300s. After his uncle, the bishop of Myra, died, Nicholas became the new bishop. Because Nicholas performed wonders he was very popular. One legend tells about Nicholas who helps three poor sisters. They did not have a marriage portion to marry and decided to live unchaste. Three nights in a row he threw three purses filled with golden coins trough their window, so they could marry. Another popular legend is the one about the three young men who, during a big famine, where killed by an innkeeper. He cut them in pieces and put them in a big tub with pickle. This way he still could serve his guests meat. Sint Nicholas, who visits the inn discovers soon what happened. He goes to the cellar and finds the tub. He immediately starts to pray and a miracle happens: the young men arise from the tub reborn again. This image can be found again on gingerbread boards, imprints and chocolate moulders. Saint Nicholas of Myra died on December 6th 342. He is the patron for people in need and thanks to pilgrims and crusades he became beloved by the common people: seamen, merchants, virgins, bankers, pupils, but also thieves and bachelors could count on him. A lot of churches where dedicated to him. Saint Nicholas celebration in Holland today There are a lot of sources which give various information about the progress of history into the present-day celebration of Saint Nicholas. One thing is clear, it is mix of traditions throughout ages. Saint Nicholas arrives in Holland from Spain around the end of November and on December 5th he celebrates his birthday. During his visit children place one of their shoes by the fireplace with a present for him and his grey horse and sing a Saint Nicholas song. If they have been sweet all year they receive a small present in their shoe. Saint Nicholas and his helpers go down the chimney to bring the presents and on December 5th families and friends come together to celebrate his birthday. On this day Saint Nicholas visits, to give presents from a big bag. The day after, on December 6th, he goes back with his ship to Spain, where he lives. When Saint Nicholas has left everyone prepares for Christmas and the arrival of Santa Claus. Because of the mix of traditions throughout ages also Santa Claus was created later on. This is actually the same man as Saint Nicholas, but only in Holland and Belgium Saint Nicholas is still celebrated. History tells that in 1611 a group of Dutch Kolonists came to New Amsterdam (New York) with their patron Saint Nicholas. Later on Dutch Americans always carried Saint Nicholas dolls (in Holland they are made from brown spiced biscuit and servered with tea or coffee) during their Christmas parades in New York. Saint Nicholas even became the patron of New York. From this time on through poems, stories, cartoonists and later in the nignteenthirties because of a Coca Cola campaign Santa Claus became Santa Claus as we know him in present-days. Coca cola needed a figure who was warm-hearted and trustful, so children would drink Coca Cola. In Europe the popularity of Santa Claus became also bigger and Saint Nicholas was pushed aside. Except in Holland and Begium people still celebrate Saint Nicholas. But every year Christmas and Santa Claus are used earlier in shops, on television and for other commerce. The question has arised: is the tradition of Saint Nicholas strong enough to survive the younger celebration of Santa Claus too keep them both? Press kitt Winky’s Horse 6 8. Writer - Tamara Bos 10.1 writer’s statement The story of Winky's Horse (a.k.a. Winky en het paard van Sinterklaas), the title of the book I wrote at the same time as the film script) is very dear to me. I have long entertained the idea to write a story about a child who asks St Nicholas for a horse and then mistakes St Nicholas' own horse for a gift and takes it home. I think everyone understands how the magic of St Nicholas grows to enormous proportions in the heads of young children. Because parents often nip these dreams and fantasies in the bud, I made Winky a child with a different cultural background. Winky's parents are not familiar with the typically Dutch celebration of St Nicholas, and this leaves plenty of room for Winky's fantasy to wander far and wild. The quest of this strong-willed child is not impeded or directed by annoying adults. I chose a Chinese family because the Chinese are known for their isolated way of life. This, and the busy life of Winky's parents who run a small restaurant, lend credibility to the fact that Winky’s parents are not really engaged in the celebrations surrounding St Nicholas, which are to become so important to their daughter. In this universal story of desires and dreams, set against the typically Dutch background of the celebration of St Nicholas, the clash between these two immigrant generations are an enrichment to the story itself. Her strong desire and the death of Saartje, the old pony, make Winky into a main character with independent self-will who in the end takes events into her own hands. For one moment she triumphs, when she rides through the illuminated seaside town on the back of St Nicholas' horse - a fairy-tale image. The story is bound to have a happy ending because Winky’s uncompromising and decisive attitude deserves, of course, to be rewarded. She is the heroine of the story. In order to be able to identify with the situation and tell an authentic story, I did a lot of research and had frequent contact with Irene Chan. She arrived in the Netherlands when she was four years old, after having spent the first years of her life in China, where she had been raised by her grandmother. I presented her with my treatment and the funny thing was that some of the scenes I invented (like placing a shoe by the fireplace and finding it still empty the next morning) had actually happened to her. I also let her read the final script, to make sure that I hadn't written anything foolish. Irene dispelled my fears of Winky maybe being a bit too decisive. She said that the image of the obedient, modest Chinese girl that prevails among us Westerners is a cliché. Of course there are also adventurous and cheeky Chinese girls, and yes, they have plenty of conflicts with their parents. To avoid a fight, they sometimes act the good girl, but in the meantime… When near the end of the story, out of pure disappointment and anger Winky shouts 'stupid St Nicholas', this is a very bad thing, and Winky knows it. But speaking her mind she is perhaps more true to the real Winky than being the quiet little girl she was at the beginning of the film. The voice-over that was added at a later stage works on different levels: it makes Winky, who in the beginning is rather quiet and not very expressive, more interesting by giving us access to her way of thinking. The voice-over also helps the younger audience by providing additional information where necessary. I used this same technique before in the television series Class dismissed!. I feel that especially young audiences deserve beautiful and magical drama that is also emotional and funny. I believe Winky's Horse is exactly that. Director - Mischa Kamp 11.1 director’s statement People always warned me not to make films about children, animals, old people, or boats because they each are notoriously hard to control. Sound advice no doubt, still I managed to make my first feature film about all of them: the main characters in ‘Winky’s horse’ are a little girl, a white horse and an old man who arrives from Spain on a boat. I would do it again in a heartbeat. The tale of Winky, a young Chinese girl who has to adapt to a completely different culture, tells the universal story of surviving in a new and often unwelcoming world. Through her eyes we experience the hilarious misunderstandings, the search for love and friendship and the pain of rejection that immigrants face. But nothing can stop the open and deeply curious Winky. We all desperately want her wish to come true. 11.2 director’s background Ms. Mischa Kamp majored in screenwriting and directing at the Dutch Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
