There is a strong probability that the R10,00 level will be realised before the end of June! It amazes me that motorists in general make no effort to drive economically. Every day I see cowboys with their pedals jammed to the floor, scorching away from robots etc .and I wonder just how far the fuel price must go before they accept that they must change their mode of driving/riding. By the time you read this our 23rd Natal Regularity Trial will be history and this year marks the end of an era as it is the last rally to be organized by Ken and Barbara Sink. Our club is indebted to them for all the years during which they planned and organized the event at a number of different venues. It is now over to the younger members to take over the responsibility and carry the tradition forward. Our "Plums in May" held on Saturday 17th May was well supported with 17 boots open, offering a variety of spares, tools, implements, power tools, etc. Salome had her usual offering of tasty foodstuffs for sale and the bar was open for refreshments. The spares container, manned by Edwin White and Kevin Tebutt did exceptionally well taking R1000.00 from sale of spares while, at the same time doing a sort out and tidy up of the old container. There is much material to go to the scrap merchants. Dave Stone also had an excellent day for the library, taking in R700.00 from the sale of magazines etc. all of which put a smile on the face of our treasurer, Aubrey Cilliers! Notice of a rather special forthcoming event is a joint venture combining the Magnum Motor Cycle Rally and the SAVVA National Motor Car Rally to be held from 13 -- 16 August 2008 with the Badplaas Resort as the base of operations. At this stage I have no details of costs but will keep you informed or you can access the Pretoria Old Motor Club on www.pomc.co za Alan Young ILL and INFIRM As most of you by now know, our patron Jim Cramer has moved into a care centre in Pinetown .I must thank Edwin White for kindly bringing Jim to our main meeting and safely returning him. Both Barney and Phyllis Barnett have suffered setbacks .Barney had a fall in the shower and fractured a shoulder and Phyllis experienced complications in having a pacemaker fitted. We wish them both a speedy recovery. Other members with health problems are Mike Butler, Bill Mellor, Roly Hill and "Oom Piet" Coertse. You are in our thoughts. Liz’s Raffle was won in May by a foreigner (Gautenger) The right royal Ric Lewis. " 23rd FRAGRAM NATAL CLASSIC RALLY The Drakensville Resort was once again the venue for our Rally and we were blessed with ideal weather for the 3 days. Thursday the 22nd May saw an interesting line-up of flat tankers including a Douglas, a New Hudson, a Zenith an OK Supreme a Norton a Sunbeam and an Indian which was ridden by Ken Sink. After a late start the route wandered off toward the Cavern in the Berg foothills with little or no severe climbs to be negotiated. A u-turn brought everyone back to base by the same route without any breakdowns; a testament to the the preparation of these oldies. Thursday afternoon saw much activity in last minute fettling of bikes, registration, fitting of number boards etc.and after dinner entrants were taping together route schedules and fitting them into rally boxes .Ric Lewis should patent and sell his "rally box"; the simplest and most effective I've seen! Friday morning the first bike was off at 8.01 with the rest of the field following at intervals. The route climbed over the Berg into Golden Gate Park with morning tea stop at the Basotho Cultural Village. The route then carried on to Clarens where lunch was served and tanks were filled. Riders then did a big loop which took them to Kestel and the "tea" stop which actually comprised a coke and a biscuit! It was then "home Jerome" for a well earned cold one and a convivial evening among friends. Saturdays route took riders through Bergville with a loop passing through Winterton and onto the loop for the second time, stopping at "Adventure Bikes" for tea/coffee in very pleasant surroundings. They then continued to Winterton for a fuel stop and then reversed the direction of the loop to return to Drakensville for lunch. After lunch the route took riders to the Eskom pump station and then to the Cavern resort where they u-turned and returned to base. It was then on to the evening Dinner and Prizegiving and this is where things turned a little sour. It was to be a celebration of Ken and Barbara's 23 year involvement with the rally but after posting of the provisional results there were a number of queries, not protests I emphasize, but queries. This meant that Ken and Pip had to spend a couple of hours resolving the queries and it was after 11.00 pm before presentations could begin and Ken and Barbara could be presented with their gifts of appreciation. The good news is that for the first time in the history of the event it was won by a CMCN member and second overall also went to a CMCN member! Congratulations to Aubrey and Salome for their win and to Raymond for second overall. A number of other categories were also won by club members. Full results will be posted on the notice board and can also be viewed on our website: www.ncmc.org.za And now to the many thanks to those friends and members who helped to make the rally possible. Dick Maizey of Maizey Plastics who once again manufactured and supplied the number boards for entrants and sweeps. This represents a substantial saving to our club. Grant Vacy-Lyle of L & G Tools who donated the Fragram prizes which were handed out at the Prizegiving Dinner. What can one say about such generosity? Incidentally, it will interest members to know that ours is the only rally at which everyone receives a prize. Rob Haesloop and Raymond Meyer for donations to the rally funds. Ron Dukes --- SAVVA Steward Haverley Dukes --- Club Steward Ken Sink --- Clerk of the Course Barbara Sink --- Accomodation, Trophies and Catering Officer Aubrey Cilliers --- Treasurer Salome van Niekerk and Joan Stone --- Documentation Pip Lorentz --- Scorer Rod Thomas and Rob Wiles --- General Assistants The Marshals and Sweeps who operated under difficult circumstances with malfunctioning clocks and rushed moves, between points on the first day. To all the Entrants; without your support and participation there would of course, be no rally. Rod Thomas for his caberet alias the Village People! So our have completed our 23rd Rally and it is now over to a new group of organizers to carry on the proud tradition of our Rally. Alan Young. A SHORT HISTORY OF THE NATAL CLASSIC Clerk of the course has included the late Frank Baxter, Geoff Jackson, now living in Australia, Jock Meldrum and Ken Sink. Chief marshall over the years include Ken Sink, Geoff Wellbeloved, Gerald Hall, Jock Adamson and Alan Young. The maximum number of actual riders was 100. Others who have been involved over the years include Ron and Haverley Dukes and Barbara Sink. Many lasting friendships have been forged on this rally and long may it continue To all those who have helped in any way whatsoever to make this rally the successful social event it has become, many thanks Ken and Barbara. I will be looking for a bike to indulge in my passion again ,once I am settled in. I would appreciate your assistance, are there any bikes advertised in the magazine at the moment and could you place an advert on my behalf giving my email address as a point of contact. I will be looking for a BSA, Norton or Triumph twin or big single 50s or early 60s vintage and hope that you can assist me. I look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks, Ray Mackey RMackey@alaway.co.za DURBAN-JHB COMMERATIVE RUN 7/8TH MARCH 2008 Well another DJ has come and gone and I must thank Kevin Robertson for a very enjoyable event , with no detours through the afternoon traffic going in to Newcastle at the end of day one and none on the return to the finish at the James Hall Motor Museum. Well done Kevin! Once more the weather was brilliant although quite warm once we left Pietermaritzburg and quite a few bikes suffered from overheating and ended up on trailers. Some unfortunately didn,t make it up Fields Hill with Dave Collins having the misfortune of having his gearbox lock up on thevery same stretch. I have offered him a ride on my 1928 O K Supreme which went like a dream on this years event. It went so well that I was early at most marshall points so it will have to move up to the 60kph group next year! Of the 97 entrants 11 were from CMCN with Dave Collins,Derek Pirie,Gerry Ogilvie and Grant Vacey-Lyle experiencing problems on day one. One of our more senior rallyists had a senior moment and put Day 2,s route schedule on for day 1 and only discovered his mistake when he left Pinecity and the instruction said “exit Majuba Lodge and turn left” Well the penny dropped and he had to go like a bat out of hell to catch Gary Brown and follow him to Escourt where he managed to find the vehicle that had day 1,s route schedule. He has now joined an elite band of club members who have done likewise, at present, there are 4, and their names shall remain anonymous, unless you come and ask me nicely and then I might tell! Day 2 was a lot cooler and those who had experienced overheating problems on day 1 had trouble free rides through to the finish, although us “ Tail- end Charlies” who start first and finish last got a bit of a shower after Heidleberg but didn,t get too wet and dried out after a few k,s. Hans Coertse had once again the misfortune of having a puncture but repaired it and made it to the finish. Hans was riding a 1909 Humber which is no mean feat as it has no gearbox or clutch, being a direct drive from the engine via a belt. Hans has said that next year he and Stuart Anderson hope to enter 2 Humbers one a1909 and the other a 1910. Missing from this years event were our 2 lady entrants, namely Bianca White who has just had her second son and Sheila Stead who had no one to help prepare and service her bike as her son is now in Richards Bay. Come on chaps isn,t there someone in Sleepy Hollow that can help her out. There are still 10 months to go to next years event. Full results of the D J can be found on www.pomc.za Cheers for now.
