Teacher Preparation for Sesame Street Genetics Activity
Introduce the Unit
 Power Point- (Start with Sesame Street Theme)
Guiding Questions- what if Zoe and Elmo fell in love, got married and had a baby? What would
their baby look like? Why do children look like their parents? Why do children have some
traits of each parent?
What exactly do parents pass to their children? How do parents pass traits to their children?
1) Ask students to study the different characters and write down all of the traits that
could be passed from parent to child.
2) Write all observations on the board and distinguish between a trait and specific forms of
trait. E.g. body color is a trait that may be passed down, but there are six different
forms or colors of this trait.

SESAME STREET GENETICS ACTIVITY
Introduction:
It is an exciting time for geneticists as they have just discovered the
genome for Sesamus muppetis (sesame street characters). They have
determined that Sesame Street characters have six chromosomes. On these
chromosomes they have found specific locations of the following genes: eye shape, nose color,
lip color, body color, hair type, blood type and certain genetic disorders. Due to your expertise
in the genetics area they have hired you as their apprentice to finish the job.
You as the Apprentice
You were hired as an apprentice to the geneticists. Your task, should you accept this
assignment is to:
1) AVOID BEING FIRED!!.
2) Research traits of specific sesame street characters and identify their genotypes and
matching phenotypes.
3) Marry your assigned sesame street characters and determine the probability of their
monster children’s traits using punnett squares.
4) Create two monster children using your punnett square probability and fill out a monster
profile for each.
5) Draw your sesame street family portrait and present to class, including a list of family
members, genetic make-up and monster profile of children.
6) Draw your family pedigree.
