GENERAL RATIONALE: (Give an overview of the proposed change.) This expedited proposal is to bring the INDA AAS Degree into compliance with the SUNY requirement that AAS degrees not exceed 64 credits as a graduation requirement. Currently, the credits required range from 68.5-69.5. The following four actions that are expressed in this proposal are: 1. Remove BUS123: Entrepreneurship, 3 credit BUS course. BUS123 has shown to be redundant. Interior Design students must take a required interior design course, INT208: Professional Practice for Interior Designers, which covers many of the same concepts as BUS123. In comparing the two syllabuses, there is clearly a redundancy in coverage of business practices. For example, INT208 and BUS123 both examine the establishment of a business and how to deal with financial and legal aspects. Both cover the development of business responsibilities with the clients/customers. Also, INT103, INT201, INT205 and INT220 cover other aspects concerning business responsibilities such as specifications for ordering materials, client relationships, salesmanship, and scheduling. 2. ART133: Drawing I would be replaced with ART130: 2D Design. This change would facilitate an easy transfer to 4-year institutions since ART130 2D is a core foundation course for all upper level art courses. 3. INT115 Design Freshman Seminar will also be changed to 1 credit to reduce the credit limit. 4. INT220 Materials and Construction Methods for Interior Designers would be rewritten as a 3-credit/6 contact-hours studio course. This reduction of INT220 as a 3 credit/6 contact hours studio course would bring it into alignment of the same offering at other 4-year institutions. 5. Change the prerequisite for INT226 from INT101: Interior Design I to INT103: Interior Design II. II. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Are the admission requirements for the program changing? ( ) Yes ( X ) No If yes, remembering that SCCC is an open-access institution, provide the new admission requirements, show how they have changed, and provide rationale for the change. Describe why this program cannot be consistent with the College's open-access mission and how these requirements are intended to assure that students are prepared to complete the program. ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY Revised Fall 2014 Current Admission Requirements: Proposed Admission Requirements: Rationale: III. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Are substantive changes to the program description being proposed? ( ) Yes ( X ) No If yes, provide new description, show how it has changed, and provide a rationale for the change. Current Description: Proposed Description: Rationale: IV. CURRICULUM OUTLINE A. Are curricular/course changes being proposed. ( X ) Yes ( ) No If yes, describe the changes and provide a rationale for the change. 1. Removing two 3 credit courses from the curriculum would bring down the credits within the 64 SUNY mandated credits. One course, BUS123, has shown to be redundant. [Appendix C: Syllabus Learning Outcomes for INT208 and BUS123.] Also, INT103, INT201, INT205 and INT220 cover other aspects concerning business responsibilities such as specifications for ordering materials, client relationships, salesmanship, and scheduling. 2. Replacing ART133: Drawing I, a studio course in artistic drawing, with ART130, 2D Design. The focus in ART130 will reinforce design terms and be a strong foundation course for the students. Replacing ART133 does not overlook the importance of drawing. The interior design program consists of five intensive interior design courses (INT101, INT103, INT201, INT205, INT220) emphasize specific drawing necessary for an interior designer, similarly covered in ART133. The particular drawing skills for these five courses are specified in their course syllabus as per the following: INT101: Interior Design I ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY Revised Fall 2014 Learning Outcome 5: Develop scaled drawings and elevations after assessment and measurement of onsite space. o Learning Outcome 9: Develop awareness of visual symbols used in the reading and drawing of blueprints. INT103: Interior Design II o Learning Outcome 2: Measure on-site spaces and draw floor plans and elevations in 1/4-inch and ½-inch scale. o Learning Outcome 5: Develop floor plan into 3D paraline drawings, isometric and axonometric. o Learning Outcome 9: Illustrate knowledge of universal measurements through accurately drawn floor plans and elevations. INT201: Interior Design III o Learning Outcome 6: Measure on-site public space and produce drawings in 1/8-inch scale. o Learning Outcome 10: Choose the appropriate type of drawings to best support design solution. o Learning Outcome 13: Support a design solution using 2 pt. perspective as the graphic means of communication. o Learning Outcome 15: Support a design solution using 1 pt. perspective as the graphic means of communication. INT205: Working Drawings I o Learning Outcome 2: Draw thumbnail sketches that analyze possible design solution in a two-dimensional manner. o Learning Outcome 3: Examine and draw a wide range of plans used in the field, i.e., demolition, construction, existing conditions, furniture, elevations, axonometric and perspective. o Learning Outcome 12: Illustrate knowledge of the universal measurement through accurately drawn floor plans and elevations. INT220: Materials and Construction Methods for Interior Designers o Learning Outcome 1: Practice precise skill of line quality and lettering techniques. o Learning Outcome 6: Formulate advanced presentation techniques encompassing rendering and perspectives to further enhance graphics for greater client understanding. o 3. INT115 Design Freshman Seminar will be changed to 1 credit to reduce the credit limit. The course content will be slightly adjusted, but ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY Revised Fall 2014 the academic integrity of the course will be maintained as it is a careerfocused freshman seminar. 4. INT220 Materials and Construction Methods for Interior Designers has been rewritten as a 3-credit/6 contact-hours studio course. This reduction of INT220 as a 3 credit/6 contact hours studio course would bring it into alignment of the same offering at other 4-year institutions. B.
