Community Service Information
Students this is just a short list of some places you could volunteer. I am sure that there are hundreds of other places where you could volunteer;
feel free to find something closer to you or that interest you more.
To qualify as a place you can volunteer, the place must be non-profit…like schools, churches, and organizations that help the community. They
should not be businesses like restaurants, stores, or daycares. Although that is very nice and thoughtful of you, it isn’t really community service
unless it benefits a lot of people not just the owners of a store that need extra help on the weekends for example. Most importantly community
service should not be work that you get paid for. (Sorry  )
So here is what you need to do:
1. Call one of the places above or someplace you have in mind and ask if they need volunteers
2. Ask them what type of volunteer work they need done…like sweeping, filing, organizing, talking to people, answering phones, etc.
3. Ask them if there are any requirements that volunteers need to fulfill before they begin….like taking medical exams or getting
fingerprinted (if working with children)…or it could simply be to fill out an application
4. Set up a date when you can come in to either take care of paperwork or begin your first day volunteering
5. Remember to tell them that you need to do community service for school credit and that you will need a letter on ‘letterhead’ that says
your name, what you did, where you helped, and for how many hours.
Notes and Warnings:
1. Students, your number one priority should be safety. If you do not feel comfortable helping at that place or working with certain
people, you do NOT have to stay there and you do not have to go back. It is not worth the risk.
2. You are not obligated to do anything that they want. You should agree on what your job responsibilities will be before you begin.
3. You do not need to complete all of your community service hours in one place. Try a couple if you like and of course everything is
always better when you work with someone you know…so take a classmate with you and do your community service hours together.
4. The community service hours are worth 50pts for your off-track packet. I mostly want you to do this because it looks great on your
college application and helps you get scholarships. Some of you need to do this because it will make a difference between two grades.
I cannot force you to do this but you have absolutely nothing to lose by trying. The other reason I want you to do community service is
because it helps you grow up a little bit...maturity levels make a big difference when making important decisions.
5. You could look up locations and get directions by going to www.yahoo.com and clicking on the link for maps (left hand side). Type in
the address to the place you want to go and see where it is.
6. You may need to take the bus or train to get to some of these locations. Go to www.mta.net and type in the address and it will tell you
what buses/trains to take.
7. If you have any questions or concerns please call me (310) 625-9755 or email me at noehmig@gmail.com.
8. MOST IMPORTANT: Please make sure your parents know where you are and what you are doing all the time. 
