ISHAM Working Group on Fungal infections in cystic fibrosis (November 2007) With the organization of the second meeting of the ECMM/ISHAM Working group on Pseudallescheria/Scedosporium infections, little has been done at the moment in our newly approved working group. Nevertheless, some collaborative works have already been initiated : - An epidemiological study has been initiated involving several university hosiptals in France with the objective to get a better knowledge of the diversity of the filamentous fungi colonizing the airways of CF patients, the clinical releavance of this colonization and to define guidelines for the mycological examnation of sputum samples. Seven University Hospitals (Lille, Dunkerque, Rouen, Dijon, Grenoble, Angers and Bordeaux) are involved in this study coordinated by Laurence Delhaes and supported by the french Ministry of Health, the french association “Vaincre la Mucoviscidose”, and Pfizer Laboratories. - A collaborative work has been initiated between the Host-Parasite Interaction Study Group and Pr. Tsung Chain Chang from the University of Tainan in Taiwan dealing with the development of DNA chips for the molecular detection and direct identification of fungi colonizing the airways of CF patients from respiratory secretions. - Genomic and proteomic studies of Aspergillus fumigatus isolates recovered from respiratory secretions of CF patient have been initiated in a project coordinated by Françoise Symoens (Brussels, Belgium) and involving Tom Coenye (University of Ghent, Belgium), the HostParasite Interaction Study Group (Angers, France) and Claudine Pinel and Renée Grillot (University Hospital of Grenoble, France). - Collaborative works have been initiated between the host-Parasite Interaction Study Group and SONAS (also from Angers University, France) for the search for new azole drugs efficent against Scedosporium species, and the characterization of siderophores produced by these fungi. Additionally, a letter has been sent to Philippe Arhets, the Deputy-Director for European Affairs in France, for the preparation of the third call for proposal in FP7 (see Letter.doc). Our project, which is focused on fungal risk within patients with cystic fibrosis, has been selected by the scientific office in France, and submitted to the European Community. Moreover, biochemical studies needed for a better understanding of the pathogenesis of fungal infections undoubtedly will be greatly facilitated by the knowledge of the genome of our pathogens. Sequence of the genomes of Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus terreus is now available. So we would like to apply to a call for proposal from the National Agency for Research (ANR- Call for proposal Pathogenomics) or from Genoscope for sequencing the genome of one of the species within the Pseudallescheria boydi/Scedosporium apiospermum complex. Finally, we would like to organize in Angers the first meeting of our new working group. On 2009, the annual conference of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society will be held in Brest, another city of Western France, and it may be interesting to organize our meeting in the following days, to permit to some of us to attend also this important congress.
