Lab 6
The following list of topics is intended to guide the student during their studying of the topics introduced in the lab.
Not all topics in each chapter will be tested; however, any topics introduced in the laboratory by the instructor should
be considered information that will be tested. This list is meant only to guide the student as they study each chapter for
the exams. As you read through each chapter, pay particular attention to the words marked in bold and italics.
 Lab 6
Chapter 6 – Sedimentary Rocks
o What is a sedimentary rock?
o What is physical and chemical weathering?
o How do sedimentary rocks form?
o Sedimentary processes and rocks
 Sedimentary Rock and Sedimentary Textures
 Know and be able to identify the various grain shape and
size textural terms as well as the crystalline and
microcrystalline textures
 Sedimentary rock and sediment composition
 Know and be able to identify biochemical, chemical and
detrital sedimentary rocks
 Formation of sedimentary rocks
 Know and understand the various processes that form
sedimentary rocks
o Sedimentary rock classification/Sedimentary rock identification worksheet
 Be able to completely identify the sedimentary rocks from the lab.
 Be able to identify each property associated with each specimen
 In other words, you should be able to fill in completely a
blank sedimentary rock identification worksheet by
examining the sedimentary rock specimens
 Note: Sedimentary Rock Analysis and Classification Figure
is a very good flow chart for identifying sedimentary rocks,
however, some rock names used on this figure may not
match the names supplied in the lab on the rock
identification worksheet. You will be expected to use the
terms from the worksheet.
