CATALOG DESCRIPTION
SPA 201-70. Intercultural Communications in Spanish.
Students strengthen their basic language skills while continuing to
broaden cultural awareness of Spanish-speaking societies. Students
relate experiences, produce brief reports on course topics, and express
opinions concerning a variety of themes. Students learn to
communicate on a more complex level in Spanish. Taught in Spanish.
Prerequisite: SPA 102 or equivalent. This course must be taken with
SPA 202-70. (3 hours)
SPA 202-70. Practical Applications in Spanish.
Students advance their speaking, writing, reading, and listening
language skills in this interactive course focused on the practical
application of the language in contemporary Spanish-speaking
countries. Activities include role-play, projects, reports, and
discussions of texts. Taught in Spanish. This course must be taken with
SPA 201-70 (3 hours)

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
SPA 201/202 is designed to provide students with an elementary knowledge of
the Spanish language through practice of the skills: listening, speaking, reading
and writing. The course will focus on developing students’ ability to use the
language in everyday situations and to appreciate the Spanish-speaking world.
For best progress students are expected to actively participate in all activities
using Spanish.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance policy/ Participation:
Daily attendance is imperative as there are multiple skills to be mastered. Failure
to attend class results in missed opportunities to practice the language.
Participation in class discussions and exercises are essential. Therefore if you are
not in class you won’t be able to participate. Each unexcused absence will reduce
your grade by one letter. No student missing more than three class meetings will
pass the course. Please come to class on time: repeated tardiness will reduce
your grade by up to one letter grade. Participation is 15% of your grade.
Homework:
The homework “para entregar” must be done before entering the classroom
and turned in at the beginning of the class. The homework “para completar”
must be done before entering the class and turned in only when the instructor
requires it. Homework is 20% of the grade.
Grading Scale for written Homework:
5 pts.
Assignment handed in on time, complete, and totally correct.
Assignment handed in on time, complete, but with few
4.5 pts.
(1-2 ) errors.

4.0 pts.

Homework is NOT turned in on time or at all.
Compositions:
There will be 4 compositions (Mi diario en España). You will be given the
opportunity to rewrite the 4 compositions, using the correction sheet

attached to this syllabus. Even though the second version of each composition is
OPTIONAL (you do not need to turn it in) students are encourage to rewrite
them, since this exercise helps you gain an active command of Spanish. If you do
decide to turn in a second version, remember you will have to give your
instructor a copy of the first version, along with the final one, in order
to receive credit for them.
The instructor will indicate the errors on the first version. You will correct these
errors and return both versions the instructor. The first version has to be a
complete composition (40% of your grade). The final version of each
composition (60% of your grade) will be used to address specific grammar,
organization, spelling and content mistakes. Compositions are 20% of your total
grade.
Important note: No one should revise your composition before it is turned in to
your instructor. Any composition that seems to have been corrected by somebody
else, prior to the due date, will receive a cero (0) as a grade.
Quizzes:
There will be short quizzes covering the material of every two chapters (except for
the last quiz- one chapter). These quizzes are 20% of your grade.
Oral Interview/presentation:
Every student will have to do a 10 minute presentation in class based on an
interview. The interviewee must be a native speaker. This person cannot be part
of the KIIS program. The interview will consist on a list of 25 questions that the
student will prepare in consultation with the instructor. After doing the interview
the student will have to summarize the main points of the interview to present
them in class to the rest of the students. Each student will provide an outline of
their presentation to the class the day of the presentation. In addition, each
person will give the instructor a copy of the interview with the answers given by
the native speaker. The students are not allowed to read the interview from a
paper or a note card. The interview presentation is 10% of the final grade.
Final Exam:
The exam will be given during class time the last day of class. The final exam is
cumulative. It is 15% of the final grade.
