Interactive Reading Logs Summary Chapter 4 page 52 Chapter 5 page 53-54 Interaction Finny and Gene had made up the Super Suicide Society of the summer Session, and to start every meeting they had to jump out of a tree. One night, Finny and Gene were both up in the tree. As Gene Stepped onto the branch, he jostled it and Finny fell into the river. He ended up breaking his leg very badly. Gene knows he did it on purpose, but he has a hard time telling Finny. The only way Gene felt comfortable was putting on Finny’s clothes and looking in the mirror. I really don’t like how Gene moved the branch on purpose to get Finny to fall. If Gene was really mad at Finny and jealous of him, I think he should have just talked to him instead of making him fall out of a tree. When you feel jealous or angry, the best thing is always to talk about it. I was really upset when I read that Finny’s leg was broken pretty badly. I think it was unfair to him. I really wasn’t that surprised that Gene went and put on Finny’s clothes after he heard about Finny’s leg. Up until that point, Gene was really jealous of Finny. When he put on Finny’s clothes, he saw himself as Finny. That was pretty scary to me because it seemed like Gene was trying to get rid of Finny so he could take his place. Summary Chapter 9 page 129 Chapter 10 pages to 143 Interaction Leper decided to enlist in the army before he even graduates from Devon. Soon after he leaves, Gene received a telegram from Leper saying he escaped from spies and wanted Gene to come to Christmas Location. Gene went to Leper’s house in Vermont which is Christmas Location. Leper told Gene his stories from the war. Leper started talking about how he was thought to be crazy and told Gene all of his weird hallucinations. Eventually, Gene ran out. I was surprised that Leper enlisted in the army before graduating. I sort of knew he wouldn’t last long because he didn’t seem prepared enough to me. He got a section eight discharge, which is where the crazy people go. I think that he started seeing men “turn into women” and stuff like that because he was still very young. His youth probably probably affected him because he really wasn’t prepared enough, or he just really didn’t know what he was getting himself into. The stories he told Gene really scared and surprised me. I probably would have reacted the same way Gene did if someone told me stories like that. I think this may have been a little part of the reason Gene didn’t enlist in the army. If I were Leper, I would want some counseling after I got home. Summary Chapter 11 page 169 All of chapter 12 The boys held a sort of trial to settle how Finny broke his leg. While Leper was telling his story, Finny got up and left. He yelled that he didn’t care, but before he could make it down the stairs he fell again. The boys rushed after him and called the doctor. Finny had broken his leg again, but this time it was a clean break. While the doctor was trying to reset the bone, some bone marrow went to Finny’s heart and killed him. Gene admitted that he never cried about Finny’s death. Interaction I can understand why Finny wanted to run out of the trial because that would be a very weird position for him to be in. I wish that he had been more careful going down the stairs. I know that sometimes it’s hard to be careful when you are angry, but he could have avoided breaking his leg again. When the doctor said it was a clean break I was very happy. This made me think Finny would recover quickly and easily. I never expected bone marrow to get to his heart and kill him. It was really sad when Gene said that Finny’s funeral was like his own. I know how Gene was feeling because when people you know die, it makes you feel almost empty.
