Introduction
The LaBelle Nature Park is a cherished park that lies in the middle of LaBelle, Florida.
This 10.7 acre park has been overtaken by invasive plant species (i.e. air potato) and
struggles to maintain its purity. Since 2004, this park has been the site of cleanups with
the help of volunteers. The goal of the cleanups is to one day be able to restore the park
to its original state.
These cleanups now feature the unique opportunity for Florida Gulf Coast University
(FGCU) students to meet their community service hour requirement. Coupled with the
distribution of a flyer via email and community outreach, this event can become
successful. Donations from the Rotary Club and Winn Dixie, and fifteen volunteers
made this event possible.
Planning
When I refer to us I’m referring to me and Bob Call. Bob played a vital role in helping to
prepare for the event with transportation.
Off-site
First went through the list that John Capece sent me and prioritized time sensitive steps.
Informed Margaret and Bob of the list sent by John. Also, provided them with daily
updated lists that indicated my progress and what was left that needed to be done so
that they were on the same page as me. An event flyer was produced by Nargis and
was distributed through her and my email contacts (see Appendix B). Before
distribution, I received opinions from RiverWatch members about whether the flyer is
good. The flyer was also distributed to Eagle News (FGCU), Caloosa Belle, Clewiston
News, Audubon, Ecovoice, Riverwatch, LaBelle Chamber, Hendry County Tourism,
Summer Colloquium instructors at FGCU, Rotary, and Kiwanis. I put up flyers at
Edision, Forrey’s Grill, coffee shop, & UPS. Bob and I got permission to post flyers on
FGCU campus from Jessica Rhea (FGCU Service Learning Coordinator Director) who
later distributed the flyer to the schools Facebook site, summer school teachers, and the
Eagle News. We then handed out 50 flyers to FGCU students and informed them that
they could get up to ten community service hours. Margaret provided a Nature Park
map and invasive species list (see Appendix B). Ramiro Rodriquez (Hendry/LaBelle
Recreation Director) provided us with a trailer for green waste and a Port-O-Let. Bob
and I went to Winn Dixie and Save-A-Lot to see if they’d make any donations. Save-ALot told us that the Salvation Army would have to approve and Bob and I went there
next. The Salvation Army declined our request but Winn Dixie gave us a $25 gift card. I
asked Rotary if they could do anything for us (i.e. donation, volunteers, equipment) and
they provided us with a $50 donation.
Went to ace hardware and they couldn’t give us any useful equipment. Mike and Linda
McVey gave us a wheel barrow to use. Took the lawn mower from the office, a few clip
boards, pens, and tools to Margaret’s house. Also, concluded that the wheel barrow is
useless. Bob and I went to Family Dollar and Winn Dixie to purchase food and supplies
with Intelligentsia International Inc.’s PayPal card. I talked to Ron Hamel (GULF
Director) about acquiring free orange juice and he agreed to donate three galloons. I
then talked to Bernadette Rashford (see Appendix B for the orange juice flyer she gave
us) because Ron was out of the office. Unfortunately, I got back to Bernadette too late
and I was unable to obtain the orange juice. We got tools from the shed and brought
these to Margaret’s house. John gave us Nature Park maps and pictures of invasive
species. Margaret provided us with a propane grill. Marti baked brownies and Margaret
made a salad. Bob created a sign-in/sign-out sheet (see Appendix B). I emailed
Intelligentsia International Inc. the flyer and we got Beatrice, Nicholas, Anjan, and
Marine to volunteer. Margaret got two reservations to show up and the one person who
made a reservation with me couldn’t make it. The items that were used included: paper
cups, paper plates, paper towels, hot dogs, ketchup, mustard, sweet relish, a vegetable
platter, bananas and apples, cookies, sunscreen, boric acid, bug spray, gloves, saws,
shovels, rakes, and limb loppers.
On-site
Went to the Nature Park after work from 6-8pm and took photos of the plant species to
be targeted and developed a game plan as to what to focus on. One thing of major
concern was to not let the seeds of the invasive plants grow hence picking them up and
pulling all roots was necessary. Also decided what time would be appropriate for lunch
and a conclusive clean-up of the site. Concluded that shears, saws, and limb loppers
would be the most beneficial tools. Margaret England, Bob Call, and some volunteers
brought their own equipment for use. Labeled the equipment with initials of the owner so
we can easily give them back at the end. Didn’t need a designated runner because
multiple people had cars available and were coming and going (i.e. moving the green
waste to the trailer). A hose was used to fill up the water igloos. We had to apply boric
acid on the ants, and then let the water flow for a while so the boric acid gets out of the
area. Put a water igloo at Margaret’s house, another at the entrance to the park, and
one more by the trailer. Beatrice cleaned the entrance sign as we worked on the fence
and near the entrance along the trails to wait for students and others to arrive in the
morning. We always had atleast someone near the front incase someone would arrive
later. This assured that the sign-in sheet was accurate. Bob, Margaret, and I took
photos of the park. I assigned Nicholas and Bob to prepare the food. Margaret prepared
the dining area earlier that morning. Lunch was at the midway point from 1pm-2pm. We
then ate lunch at Margaret’s house which included a talk from Marti.
Future Implementation
Next time the trail needs to be mowed first. Two small sign plates need to be installed
and Ramiro can provide installation instructions. Need to contact GULF sooner to be
able to receive orange juice. Get Nargis to make another flyer along with a QR code.
The flyer needs to included Hendry/LaBelle Recreation next time as a sponsor. Need to
give flyers to Save-A-Lot and Winn Dixie and post up flyers at FGCU. Talk to
McDonalds and see if they will donate anything (i.e. food spreads, ice, plastic utensils).
Appendix A
John’s Outline:
A. PROMOTION
1. Assign someone to develop a QR code for use on the flyer that will bring up a
smartphone-scale project description, map, and reservation button. The person
developing this can be a CRCA director or an Intelligentsia student.
2. Identify and draft the informational elements to be included in promotional
announcement for students. What, where, when, and supplies to bring (like gloves and
pruning shears, if they have any.
If not then state they will be supplied).
3. List Marine as the recipient of reservations. Our goal will be to have 20 or 30 FGCU
students participate. But there will probably be only 5 unless it is well advertised...with a
buzz developed on campus.
4. Run elements list by Margaret, Bob, Annette, Jeff, Patrick, and me for content.
5. Develop an advertisement flyer to promote the event to FGCU students.
Reservations requested but not required. Arrival and departure time flexible.
6. Run it by Michal and Nargis for artistic style and layout. They may choose to
dramatically revise.
7. Pete can post to CRCA Facebook and Nargis to website.
8. Determine if there are special promotional tools that can be exploited via Facebook
(Aline, Megan or Elodie may have experience with this.) 9. By Monday, distribute final
flyer and email announcement to FGCU students via Annette, Geoff and any
mechanisms they recommend (FGCU Service Learning Coordinator's office, etc.)
B. RECONNAISSANCE (next week)
1. Visit the Nature Park with Bob and Margaret to make a list of the tasks to be
completed.
2. Mark tasks and activities on a Park map (available from Nargis) to guide
allocation/assignments of volunteers.
3. Determine tools best suited to tasks...keeping safety in mind (don't get students
dangerous tools).
4. Take photos of exotic plants to be targeted.
5. Inform LaBelle-Hendry Recreation (Romano) of our plans. Megan has his email info.
C. FIELD SUPPLIES
1. Assemble the available and useful tools from the shed and dorms.
2. Arrange for the tools to be labeled so they can be assigned to specific volunteers
upon sign-in and recovered upon sign-out.
3. Determine what bulk tools might be helpful for a large number of volunteers to use.
Probably a simple kitchen knife.
4. Determine if Family Dollar store has cheap gloves and knives and how much they
cost (typically $1 per pair of gloves).
5. Have a plan for a runner to be available to purchase additional gloves.
D. MORNING SESSION
1. Develop a plan to sign people in and assign them to tasks (hand out pre-printed
maps with assignments marked). It can include photos of plants to be targeted and
method of removal/cutting.
2. Send mower out as first task to clear the river trail then the oxbow trail.
3. Plan on keeping one person at the sign-in and tools table all the time.
4. Have a cooler of water bottles on ice.
5. Have all the tools marked and available.
6. Have a runner available by phone to bring more supplies.
E. LUNCH
1. Email with Ron Zimmerly to reserve Hendry House on that day.
2. Be sure Hendry House is marked on map as lunch location.
3. One person should be assigned to set up lunch area at Hendry House (where there
are many picnic tables).
4. Purchase the supplies the day before planning only on the number who made
reservations to attend.
5. Arrange for someone to do a talk during lunch about the river and Riverwatch.
Maybe Geoff, Patrick, Annette, or Pete.
6. Have the runner available to pick up additional supplies.
7. Contact Gulf Citrus Growers for free OJ.
8. Contact Rotary (Mel Karau) to see if they want to help with people, equipment or food
sponsorship.
9. Michal (if he attends) can take pictures for Caloosa Belle article.
F. AFTERNOON SESSION
1. Have Bob supervise the sign-out and tools collection process in the afternoon
session.
2. Plan for some of the Intelligentsia people to depart by 4pm so they can clean up if
they plant to attend the Democratic Party dinner in Clewiston.
Refine this plan and implement
