Course Description: This course will cover airport operations, private pilot theory, current
events in aviation, aviation security and airport emergency planning.
Prerequisite: None
Course Goal: This course is designed to provide the student the opportunity to develop a broad
understanding of the aviation industry.
Attendance: Students will be required to attend all scheduled classes. Attendance records will
be kept. Students should coordinate absences prior to the missed class by leaving a message on
the office phone at 812-237-2660 or by e-mail at troy.allen@indstate.edu. Each unexcused
absence will result in a 4 point reduction on your final class score. Having 10 or more unexcused
absences will result in a failing grade. In the case of a tardy arrival, it is the responsibility of the
student to ensure that the instructor has marked the student as present for class. Students are
responsible for obtaining missed notes from fellow students.
Missed Test Procedures: Students missing a test must complete the missed test prior to coming
to the next class (or during the next class). All tests not completed within seven days will be
discounted 20% on grading. Any test not taken with seven days will be recorded as a failing
grade.
Class Schedule: All classes held in the Myers Technology Center as scheduled. Please note the
holiday and school breaks periods.
Presentation: Students will conduct research on an aviation topic of their choosing and prepare
a presentation to present to the class. All researched material must be of current research content
and be relevant to the course material. Presentations will be 15 minutes in duration. The
professor must approve presentation topics at least one week before the presentation is to be
made. Failure to make your presentation on your chosen date will result in an automatic

deduction of five points for each occurrence. No presentation may be prepared by utilizing the
class textbook.
Plagiarism/Cheating: Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary is defined as “to steal and
pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own, to commit literary theft. Such practices
will not be tolerated and any evidence of such practices will result in disciplinary action. In most
cases a failing grade will be issued for the assignment. In flagrant cases of dishonesty a failing
grade will be issued for the course.
Experiential Learning: Students will log flight time in the aviation department’s simulators
and in a Cessna 172.
My Philosophy: By adhering to the guidelines spelled out in this course you will also learn
lessons in time management, dead lines, perseverance, interpersonal relations, personal discipline
and other skills that are essential in order to be successful in your chosen field. Make no mistake
all of the learning that occurs in this course will only occur with a commitment from you. It is
your choice to be committed and reap the results of your hard work or be complacent and
suffer the consequences. I am fully committed to maximizing the learning experience for you
and ask you exercise the same commitment.
The Indiana State University Handbook will govern all other class policies.
