FAST FITNESS/PHED 150 & STRENGTH TRAINING/ PHED 152 COURSE SYLLABUS – Winter 2010 GENERAL INFORMATION Location: URC 211, URC Fitness Center URC Fitness Center Hours Monday – Friday 6:15am - 10:30pm Sat & Sun, 10:15am - 9:30pm Program Director: Note: Participants may workout ½ hour beyond posted closing times (closed: January 18 & February 15). PHED 150 & PHED 152 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Workouts - each exercise session (minimum 30 minutes). Workout length will determine number of visits awarded; 30 – 59 minute workout = 1 visit; 60+ minute workout = 2 visits; maximum 2 workout visits per day. Students log-in and log-out at computer terminal; computer terminal will record workouts and assignment visits (see additional activities on log-in screen for assignment visits). Last Day for Credit is March 16. 2. New students - must view an Introduction session, prior to workout = 1 visit (available on Blackboard January 4 – March 5); course syllabus can also be found on Blackboard. 3. New participants - must attend an Orientation session with an instructor, prior to first workout. Orientations are done in the URC Fitness Center by a fitness instructor beginning January 4; participants may not work out until the orientation is completed. 4. New students - must complete study questions in PHED 150 workbook (available on blackboard) = up to 5 visits awarded; 50% or more incorrect on assignment = incomplete (10 visit deduction from overall visits). Due: January 29. (Late workbooks will be accepted until 2/5 without penalty visit deduction (workbook completion visits will not be rendered) after this date, no workbooks will not be accepted). 5. Returning students - must complete an article assignment (instead of redoing the workbook, available on blackboard) = 1 visit; 50% or more incorrect on assignment = incomplete (10 visit deduction from overall visits). Due: February 26. (Late articles will be accepted until 3/5 without penalty visit deduction (article assignment completion visits will not be rendered) after this date, no article assignments will not be accepted). 6. All students -must complete post-evaluation (program survey) Due: March 12 (post evaluations will not be accepted after this date) = 1 visit. GRADING: 1. Failure to complete the workbook or article assignment = 10 visit deduction from visit total. Failure to complete post-evaluation = 5 visit deduction from visit total. Incomplete grades are not given for PHED 150 or PHED 152 for any reason. If student is enrolled in both PHED 150 & PHED 152; grade requirements have to be made for both courses (example; a minimum of 20 visits are needed for each class to pass (a total of 40 visits); total visits will be equally divided into both courses and course assignments). STUDENT ID CARDS: All students must bring their current Eagle Card with them to access the URC Fitness Center. Failure to bring this card will result in no access to URC Fitness Center and loss of workout. WORKOUT CRITERIA: In order to receive credit for a workout the following criteria must be met: The workout must be a minimum of 30 minutes (equals 1 visit) Any workout 60 minutes or longer is worth 2 visits Students are allowed a maximum of 2 workout visits per day. The workout must consist of a warm-up, core program, and cool down. The workout must be done in the URC Fitness Center. It is the student’s responsibility to track visit time and ensure log in/ outs are successful. Cheating Policy If a student is caught cheating in the course (i.e. scanning in the computer and leaving the facility, scanning in and not working out, or using another individuals Eagle card) the following will occur: First occurrence is a .5 grade deduction. Second occurrence is a 1.0 grade deduction. Third occurrence is a 0.0 grade in the course. Cheating in this course will not be tolerated and policies will be enforced by fitness instructors. Policies and Procedures: All participants of the URC Fitness Center must follow all policies and procedures listed. These policies and procedures were established to ensure that every participant using this facility has a safe and beneficial exercise experience. Failure to comply by the established policies and procedures will result in expulsion from the URC Fitness Center. (See URC Fitness Center Policies and Procedures) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Comprehensive physical fitness course designed to develop strength, flexibility and endurance (cardiovascular and muscular) in an efficient manner through the use of the EWU Fitness Center. INJURY/ILLNESS: Students who become injured or ill during the quarter need to inform the director (Melissa Elfering) immediately (359-4017). Medical documentation from a physician must be presented if seeking excused absence. This documentation must state the injury/ illness, the exercise limitations, and the expected length of time until full participation will be allowed (a maximum of 3 weeks of inactivity will be accepted upon physician’s approval). INSURANCE: Eastern Washington University and the Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation does not carry insurance covering students for health, accident or injury should it occur within a class or activity setting. Students are fully responsible for any costs incurred as a result of illness and/or injury in the Physical Education, Health and Recreation program at EWU. The responsibility for obtaining insurance rests with the student, parent or guardian. SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons with special needs may obtain personalized instruction upon request.
