Session
1
Learning Outcomes
Understand the relationship between Cardiovascular
exercise and cardiovascular fitness.
Suggested activities
1.
Students to complete practical
session described on resource sheet
47 (in staff area), to learn about
short term effects.
Heart rate monitors.
Blue mats / red mats
Red balls / blue balls
4 boxes (to put balls in)
Blood pressure monitor
Blue and red cones.
2.
Students to split into groups and
come up with ideas of what the long
term effects of exercise might be on
the cardio system.
Students to present their ideas to
rest of class, with teacher explaining
them in greater depth / correcting
errors.
Large A3 paper.
Coloured pens..
In groups, students to try and define
the four key terms.
Teacher to lead discussion to correct
students ideas.
Students to produce information
posters on the effects of short term
and long term effects of exercise on
the cardiovascular system, with the
correct definitions.
A3 Paper
Coloured pens.
Know the short term effects of participation in exercise
on;
Increased heart rate
Systolic / diastolic blood pressure
Increased blood pressure
Understand the long term effects of exercise on;
3.
Increased stroke volume
Lower resting heart rate
Greater cardiac output
2
Demonstrate understanding of the short term and long term
effects of exercise.
1.
2.
Be able to state the correct definitions of the following terms

3
The effects of lifestyle on the cardiovascular system.
Rest – allows heart to increase in size, and the number of
capillaries to increase.
1.
Using examples of professional
sports people, discuss with students
what effect rest will have on their
bodies.
Diet – Cholesterol.
2.
Give students examples of foods
with good cholesterol and bad
cholestoral and ask them to suggest
what the difference might be for the
body.
3.
Discuss the effects that cholesterol
has on the cardiovascular system,
and how a person can reduce the
risk.
4.
Students should be able to describe
effects of nicotine and alcohol on
the body. They could demonstrate
this knowledge by producing a
powerpoint or prezi, using texts
books / internet as a basis for their
research
Recreational Drugs Nicotine and Alcohol.

Understand the immediate and short term effects on the
respiratory system.
2.
3.
Breathing
Oxygen Debt
4.
5.
6.
5
Understand the long term effects of regular exercise on the
respiratory system
Lung efficiency
Lung capacity
Tidal volume
Vital Capacity
Increases the number of alveoli
1.
2.
Teacher to describe gaseous
exchange to students
Students to take part in the
multistage fitness test.
Once students ‘drop out’ they
should write down as much as they
can about how their bodies feel.
Stduents can try and explain ‘why’
these things are happening to their
bodies.
Teacher to lead discussion upon
completion of test.
Students should write down the
description of these short term
effects.
Using a spirometer, students can
work out what their vital capacity is.
Students can describe what they
think regular exercise would do to
this figure.
Using videos of GB cyclists, teacher
can explain the long term effects.
.
6
Understand the effects of nicotine on the alveoli.
1.
2.
Teacher to discuss the effects of
nicotine on the alveoli with
students.
Teacher to use smart response
tools to test student knowledge
using real exam examples.
