Carol Gilkey teaches flute lessons at AVHS, Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning at 2:30PM.
Ms. Gilkey, adjunct instructor at Normandale Community College, is an active flute teacher in
the Twin Cities. She is the first director of flute choirs in the Twin Cities, arranges and publishes
flute choir music and flute technique books. She has taught in the public school on Long Island
NY, DOD schools and U of Maryland in Okinawa and MacPhail. She has presented several
times at the National Flute Convention. Degrees earned include a MM at Manhattan School of
Music and BM at DePauw University.

Carrie Vecchione, oboe/English horn, teaches oboe at her home studio in Apple Valley. She has
a distinguished career teaching beginning through graduate level oboists. Her students have won
scholarships to top conservatories and gone on to win orchestral and teaching positions. As a
performer, she subs in the Minnesota Orchestra and Minnesota Opera and has served as Principal
Oboe of the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra. She received Doctoral and Bachelor degrees
from Louisiana State University, and her Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
Her teachers have included Joseph Robinson, Earnest Harrison and Mark Ostoich.

Joyce Carlson-Rioux teaches bassoon lessons at AVHS on Tuesdays beginning at 3:30PM. Ms.
Carlson-Rioux has taught bassoon privately for over ten years. She completed a B.A. in music at
Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Her private teachers include Matthew
Ruggiero (now retired) of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, as well as John Miller (Principal
Bassoon) and Mark Kelley (Co-principal Bassoon) both of the Minnesota Orchestra. Ms.
Carlson-Rioux performs with the Courante Winds, a reed trio, and is the principal bassoon of the
St. Paul Civic Symphony. She has also appeared with other local groups including the
Metropolitan Symphony and the Rochester Symphony.
CLARINET

Rena Kraut teaches clarinet lessons at AVHS on Tuesdays beginning at 2:30PM. She is a
classically trained clarinetist who has been performing locally and regionally with the Minnesota
Orchestra, the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, and the Omaha Symphony Orchestra since
moving to Minneapolis in 2003. She received her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the
University of Minnesota in 2007 and is adjunct professor of clarinet at Augsburg College. Rena
has held positions with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and the Sarasota and Des Moines
Opera Orchestras and is an active chamber musician in the Twin Cities. In addition to a large
private studio, Rena is the clarinet teacher and Director of Chamber Music at the Saint Paul
Conservatory of Music.

Joan Hutton teaches saxophone and clarinet lessons at AVHS on Thursdays beginning at
2:30PM. Ms. Hutton has been a private sax and clarinet instructor for over 14 years. She holds a
Bachelor’s degree in music education and performance from Ithaca College and a Master’s
degree in performance from the Eastman School of Music. She is a member of the Ancia
Saxophone Quartet (www.anciaquartet.com), the jazz-funk sextet Rare Medium, and has
performed woodwinds on numerous shows at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater and other local
theaters. She also teaches at Augsburg College.

Scott Johnson teaches saxophone lessons at AVHS on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. In
addition to teaching, Mr. Johnson performs as a freelance saxophonist throughout the twin cities
area.

Paul Stodolka teaches trumpet lessons in the Apple Valley area. He received his trumpet

HORN

Kim Allmann teaches horn lessons at her home just north of Farmington. Ms. Allmann is a local
freelance musician, and was principal horn of the Rochester Symphony from 2001 - 2010. She
has a Master’s degree in Horn Performance from the University of MN, as well as Bachelor’s
degrees in Horn Performance and Instrumental Education. Kim teaches horn because she has a
real passion for encouraging student horn players and seeing them develop their skills.

John Tranter teaches low brass at AVHS on Thursdays and Fridays beginning at 2:30PM. Mr.
Tranter is currently an Adjunct Professor of Trombone and Euphonium at the University of
Minnesota-Twin Cities. In addition to being a regular performer with the Saint Paul Chamber
Orchestra, Mr. Tranter has also performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, Minnesota Opera,
JazzMN Big Band, on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" and numerous touring
Broadway shows and local theatre productions. At the national level, Mr. Tranter is also a
highly active recitalist and clinician, and has presented many solo performances and workshops
at festivals and universities in the United States, Europe and the Pacific Rim.

Dr. Paul Budde has a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from the University of WisconsinEau Claire (1993), a Masters Degree in Music Performance from the University of Minnesota
(2004), and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Minnesota (2011). Dr. Budde
currently teaches at Gustavus Adolphus College (Euphonium, Tuba, and Music Education), the
University of St. Thomas (Music Theory, Music Appreciation, World Music, and Music
Education), and Inver Hills Community College (Music Appreciation and History of Rock and
Roll); he also teaches middle school and high school students out of his home. In addition to his
collegiate teaching, Dr. Budde taught middle and high school band from 1993-2001 and is the
founder and chairperson of Tubonium, an international euphonium and tuba workshop held at

Reid Kennedy

Reid Kennedy teaches percussion lessons at AVHS on Wednesdays beginning at 2:30PM. Mr.
Kennedy is a percussionist, composer, and arranger currently involved with the Twin Cities
music scene. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in music
education. His expertise focuses on all areas of percussion: snare, mallets, timpani, and drumset.
His published percussion literature reflects his appreciation for accessible, educationally valuable
