11 ROALD HOFFMAN (1937-) PHOTO SIGNED Polish-born Jewish/American Nobel Prize winning chemist, born in Złoczów,
Poland (now Ukraine), after Germany invaded Poland and occupied the town, his family was placed in a labor camp where
his family bribed guards to allow an escape and arranged with a Ukrainian neighbor named Mikola Dyuk to hide Hoffman,
his mother, two uncles and an aunt in his attic and a storeroom of the local schoolhouse, where they remained for eighteen
months, from January 1943 to June 1944, while Hoffman was aged 5 to 7. Most of the rest of his family perished in the
Holocaust. They migrated to the United States in 1949. Candid black and white photo showing Hoffmann making a scientific

Princeton graduate, Rhodes Scholar, Major League catcher for fifteen seasons (ironically called by Casey Stengel "the
strangest man in baseball"), selected to participate on the 1934 Baseball Tour of Japan American Team accompanying
Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx & other greats to play an exhibition series against the Japanese. Unbeknownst to all, Berg was an
American spy taking significant reconnaissance photographs and conducting additional espionage activities that were later
instrumental in helping the Allies against Japan during WWII. Served as a spy for the Strategic Services Unit, and later
Office of Strategic Services (OSS, the forerunner of the CIA), awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Harry S Truman,
