COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an overview of the study of victims. The course covers the history of victimology.
The plight of crime victims, society’s changing view of victims, and the role of law
enforcement, the courts, and corrections in dealing with victims. Victim groups with special
needs, such as police officers/correctional officers who are injured or killed in the line of duty,
are also examined.
COURSE COMPETENCIES:
During this course, the student will be expected to:
1. Define victimology.
1.1 Discuss origins of victimology.
1.2 Compare victimology with criminology.
1.3 Describe what victimologists do.
1.4 Delineate the need for victimologist to remain neutral.
2. Describe how victimology contributes to rediscovery process.

3. Describe how to analyze data from the UCR and NCVS.
3.1 Use statistics to reveal patterns of criminal behavior.

4.1 List risk-reduction activities.
