The one-on-one tutoring program is available Monday through Sunday from 3-10 p.m. allows students to participate in live online sessions with an experienced tutor through instant messaging and a shared whiteboard. To access the service, students only need a computer with Internet access and a valid Library card, which is available free within minutes at any Los Angeles Public Library branch or the Central Library. Patrons may also access “Live Homework Help” using their smart phones or PDAs. “Sessions are available in Spanish or English,” said Yago Cura, Outreach Specialist in the Central Library’s Youth Services Department. “During hours that tutors are not available, users can access informational Websites, instructional videos, study guides and practice exams, SAT prep materials, standardized test resources, practice worksheets, and interactive flash cards.” Live Homework Help provides tutoring in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English for kindergarten through 12th Grade students and adult learners. “There are more than 2,000 tutors available to students from this collaboration and tutors include teachers, professors, graduate students, and professionals in the field of the discipline they tutor,” Cura said. On the Library’s Website at www.lapl.org, Live Homework Help can be accessed through the Kids’ Path and Teen Web portals. Students do not have to create an account for tutoring; however creating an account provides users access to a “student locker,” which keeps a list of all previous Live Homework Help sessions.
