Positions Available for the General Representative 2 Office:
UNDIE RUN CHARITY EVENT
Positions available: Project Director (1), Staff members (4)
Project Description: We all remember the first time we heard of Undie Run when we took our first tour of
UCLA. A campus tour guide in a bruin blue collared shirt telling us how thousands of UCLA students run through
campus in a their underwear to celebrate the midpoint of finals week. Undie Run embodies what it means to be a
Bruin—in so many words. UCLA is a university of “work hard, play hard” students that value their traditions and
their education. We make time for fun, and we know when its time to take car of business. Undie shows how
Bruins strike and balance. The popularity of Undie Run has made it a defining characteristic of UCLA and one of
our unique traditions.
In recent years the longevity of this tradition has been compromised. Damages to campus, non-UCLA student
participation, and safety issues have aroused concern amongst the administration. The route has been changed
three times in the last three years and the event has lost a good portion of its appeal after changing the “finish line”
from the quad to the IM field. Nothing stands in the way of the administration eliminating the event for good.
The focus of this project will to turn Undie Run into a charity event benefiting local homeless shelters and clothing
drives, the Salvation Army, and Good Will. There are very few events on the UCLA campus that mobilize student
like Undie Run. Not only will this event benefit thousands of homeless and underserved individuals, but it
will help secure Undie Run as a UCLA tradition for decades.
FIAT LUX BUSINESS CLASSES
Positions available: Project Director (1), Asst. Project Director (1), Staff members (4)
Project Description: : UCLA students simply don’t have the skill set that is desirable to top level employers.
UCLA students may know the theory behind what they are studying, they may be more prepared more graduate
school than most, and the UCLA line of education fits within the research focuses mission of the entire UC system;
however, a cross town rival can discount a cash flow statement like its nobodies business.
There have been many attempts by student government to secure an undergraduate minor program. However, after
coming very close to success, funding limitations ended the project. Many student groups on campus, such as
Bruin Consulting and the Undergraduate Business Society, offer supplementary courses for relatively expensive
rates to learn these practical and employer desired concerns. However, the high cost and limited scope of these
courses don’t reach the number of students that desire these practical skills. Whether its business, non-profit
management, law, etc., the university does not do a sufficient job at connecting theory with practice while giving
us the skills necessary to put what we have learned into action.
This is why the goal of this project is to partner with key student groups and faculty to offer low cost 1-unit
classes that can deliver a connection between theory and practice to help make UCLA students more desirable
in the work force—a desirability that has never been as important as it is now.
COURSE READER PRICE REDUCTION CAMPAIGN
Positions available: Project Director (1), Asst. Project Director (1)
Project Description: Textbooks and course readers are becoming ever more expensive, and many student groups
have made a strong effort to help control costs. The Gen Rep 2 office is joining the fight against rising course
reader costs by implementing two cost savings initiative while continuing to find innovative ways to address these
costs.
First, the focus of this project is to continue to build upon the work of former General Representative 1, Monica
Kohles this past year. She spearheaded an investigation looking into controlling the costs by not paying double
for chapters and articles the UCLA Library already have the rights. This investigation showed up that many
UCLA course readers include works that student are essentially paying double for because they are paying for
Library services and course reader printing services. By creating infrastructure, ASUCLA course reader printing
will have access to these already owned works, student government will be able to lower the cost of course readers.
Secondly, the goal of this project is to sell advertisement space within ASUCLA course readers. For example,
between two articles, Kaplan Test Prep would have a page about courses offered over summer or Enzo’s Pizza
would have a page of discount coupons. It would be interesting to have a chapter of a course reader sponsored by
Bank of America of Westwood. These very small and imbedded advertisements would drive down costs and help
local businesses reach students.
DISCOUNT CONCERT TICKETS
Positions available: Project Director (1), Staff members (2)
Project Description: UCLA has at its disposal a resource that is unparallel to an in the sphere of academics. We
have the resource of nine other UC sister campuses that includes more than 220,000 students, making it the
University of California the largest university in the world. This statewide system is used for example by the UC
library system. A UCLA student can, within a matter of days, a book from anywhere within the UC library
system. In an effort to help answer the demand for big name concerts and events, the Gen Rep 2 Office will
build partnerships with other UC campus to offer UCLA discounted tickets to their events.
INCREASING USAC TRANSPARENCY
Positions available: Project Director (1), Staff members (8)
Project Description: UCLA undergraduate students pay $120 a year to their student government. Upon hearing
this, most UCLA students will ask what their money is going toward and what I’m I getting from student
government? Bruins simply don’t feel they have a student government that is present on campus, working for a
better campus, and helping to solve the problems facing students and student groups. This is a frustrating reality
because many student government offices work very hard to make student government effective and represent the
students they serve. To ensure student government is addressing the issues that are on the minds of student,
the Gen Rep 2 office will launch a six-prong transparency and campus involvement initiative to help USAC
answer to their constituents, inform students about USAC, and develop effective communication channels with
student groups.
The recent Obama campaign pioneered a new forum by which to communicate with voters and constituents. The
goal of this project is to help show students where their fees are going in a very clear way and to tell them
about the issues facing UCLA on timely bases. The project will accomplish this by
1. Bi-monthly YouTube addresses by various members of the council to inform students and administrators
exactly what is being done by USAC.
2. Up-to-date USAC website with project and contact information.
3. BruinVoice.com – “The online suggestion box on steroids.” A place to help gauge student opinions and
get them involved in the decision process.
4. Weekly Newsletter – mandate that half of all events and programs must be con-sponsored by a student
organization outside the USAC circle
5. Classroom and Club Meeting Announcements
6. USAC main line with messaging service – student group leaders will be able to call a student government
line so council members can answer concerns and help with development
