Guillermo HILLCOAT Regional Integration This seminar comprises of three axes. The first axe introduces the concept of integration within the theory. Firstly, the traditional theory of regional integration is invoked. There are objectives of the theory: to analyze the consequences of the construction of a regional bloc on the welfare of the members and to compare the efficiency of the various forms of integration. Next, we go on to present the controversies on new regionalism: is regional integration a substitute or complement for multilateralism? The second axe is designed to analyze, via comparative statics, the different processes of integration. Starting with the most advanced experience, the Common Market and European Monetary Union, we then analyze both challenges and achievements of American and Asian integration processes. The final axe considers the role of emerging countries in the trend of globalization and in terms of formalizing free trade agreements and regional integration. The focal point of such studies is to look at preferential treaties formalized among developing countries and between developing countries and the advanced economies.
