o Camellia Times Camellia Society of Sacramento MEETING DATE: MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2010 Lutheran Church of the Master 1900 Potrero Way Sacramento, CA 95822 7:00 p.m. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “The measure of a garden is the degree to which it grabs you and haunts you after you’ve visited it.” High Hand Nursery The lovely autumn colors and cooler temperatures are reminders that summer is over. I hope each of you had a wonderful summer filled with fun, relaxation and a little adventure. Now it is time to start working on our camellias. The buds are “a sett’n” and time to do some bud thinning. There were several activities over the summer that brought camellia loving folks together. Trip to High Hand Nursery, Christmas in July was hosted by Mary and Don Bergamini at their lovely home, and the Northern California Camellia Council meeting. At our Board meeting this month, several new ideas were discussed. The Button contest is open to anyone who would like to submit a drawing for consideration. Contact Julie Vierra for entry guidelines. This should be an opportunity for any of you or your friends who have artistic talent to step forward. There is a monetary prize. We are also in the planning stages of creating a scholarship. More to come later. I look forward to an exciting year with all of you. You have an amazing group of dedicated people on the Executive and Advisory Boards. But they can’t do it all by themselves. We need your participation and ideas. LuAnn has great programs lined up for our meetings. This month’s speaker is a member of the Nuccio family who is coming from Southern California to give a talk about camellias. The Nuccio’s are known worldwide for their beautiful camellias and azaleas. Their presentation is always fun and interesting. Consider bringing a friend to this month’s meeting on October 25. “The more the merrier”, I always say. The annual Camellia Show is not until the March 5 & 6, but it is time to start getting the word out about the show. If you have any ideas or contacts where we can publicize the camellia show, let me or one of our Board Members know. I am looking forward to seeing you at the meeting. There will be delicious refreshments too. Carol Schanz, President 1 If you don’t already know, we lost some members of our camellia family this past year. Edith Mazzei, Bill Lockwood, Jean Toland, Tim Coburn, Lou Fedderman, Jake Holtzman and Wilbur Ray. They will be greatly missed. OCTOBER PROGRAM The program for October will be a talk by one of the owners of Nuccio’s Nursery! We aren’t sure which brother it will be, but he will be speaking at our October meeting. He will give a talk on their nursery and what’s new! Please mark your calendar for this very informational talk. They are renowned for their camellias! *Another new addition this year (but brought back by popular demand!) is Jackie Randall’s “Through the Garden Gate,” which highlights members camellia gardens each month. Its such fun to see other camellia enthusiast’s gardens…and you can pick up some ideas for your own yards. So welcome back Jackie and her gardens for a very fun year!* BUTTON CONTEST INFORMATION Once again we will be having our button contest, but with a different slant this year. It’s getting harder and harder to get high school art classes to enter our contest. So I got in touch with Chris Iwata, one of the Sacramento City College art instructors to see if maybe we could tap into his students. He graciously agreed to pass around our contest rules to students who may be interested in entering. I have one student who has already called me about entering and I will be talking with Chris this week to see if anyone else has shown an interest. Now I am asking you as members if you know of anyone who might be interested in entering the contest. If you do, please contact me so I can send out the contest rules and samples to him or her. We have also taken contest rules to places like Taylor’s Art Supply. We will give the winner $100, with second place receiving $50 and third place $25. Entries are due Friday, November 12th to me. So call if you have any questions. Here is what was sent out and includes the rules for the contest: The 2011 theme is “Into the Garden” Each year our Society has had a contest where students enter a design that includes the above theme, the name of our society, Camellia Society of Sacramento, and the year, which would be 2011. Within this design you draw a camellia or two in a circle format and also incorporate the “Into the Garden” theme. The entries are due no later than November 12th. Our society meets the third Monday of the month in November and at that time we display the entries and the membership votes on the button that they feel incorporates the feel of our club. The camellia(s) within the button need to be correct forms and colors of camellias. The society members know their camellias and will definitely look at that first before anything else. The writing needs to be legible and 2 aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It’s very interesting what catches the eye of each member as they go through the entries. So making it eye catching is a must! We are including some samples of buttons past and also the circle to work from. The top winner will get $100 with runners-up getting $50 and $25 for second and third places respectfully. If you have questions about anything at all, please call: Julie Vierra Carol Schanz LuAnn Watkins 371-2174 447-1969 372-1152 Some websites that might help you with camellia forms are: American Camellia Society Camellia Society of Sacramento.org Camellia Contest Rules ► Entry must be on an 8-1/2 x 11 paper, in circle format ► Must incorporate: ► ► ► ► ► “Into the Garden” theme Camellia Society of Sacramento 2011 Writing must be legible and aesthetically pleasing You may enter up to 3 entries, each of a different design Entries must be in to Julie Vierra no later than Friday, November 12th. Please call her at 916-371-2174 to set up a time to meet her or to drop off the entries. Use your imagination and your own drawing style. Make sure the colors of your camellias and leaves are correct. Our members know their camellias! Feel free to call us with any questions you may have! My friend Tamara Lopatin has moved away, so her valuable and talented input on our brochures and Camellia show handouts has dried up. But rest assured, we will have some good entries for the November meeting. Who knows, we may find another Tamara! NCCC donated $500 to the Gallo Camellia Garden for new plants. The gardens will be registered in the national garden registry. Don reported on a suggested change in the voting procedure at the shows. Jackie will have a "Through the Garden Gate" presentation at the meetings with a photo board of member's gardens. Gary asked the board to consider a $500 Scholarship Fund. All agreed! Schanz's are donating a picture and a camellia bonsai as a fund raiser. Scholarship will be available to members, their children, and grandchildren. But looking at the October newsletter from last year, I thought this article was worth repeating for our new members and also for our members in long standing. It’s just good information for everyone. So enjoy, and thanks, don!! Camellia Culture, by Don Lesmeister Now that the Fall and Winter months are here, we have a new phase to go through in growing Camellias, but in just a few short months, all our efforts will pay off.....for now, we should 1. remember to apply either 2-10-10, or 0-10-10 to our plants....now is the perfect time.....this helps to set buds....now and in December are the two times for this activity. 2. start disbudding...this will be covered at this month’s meeting. 3. water...even though the rain does a lot of this for us, we still have to remember to do some watering.....if the weather continues cooler, like it has been, we can add about 2 days to our watering schedule....and for each day it rains, we can add one more....for example, if you water every four days, you can now do it every 6 days....and if it rains today and tomorrow, you can start your schedule all over...... 6 4. lastly, now is an excellent time to get new varieties....you can repot them into your mix and they will be just fine for the blooming season... Just a reminder that again this year at our Show, we will be doing a photo contest. So get your cameras ready and watch your camellias and see if you can get some good shots in for the contest. It’s never too early. My sasanqua Yuletide is in bloom as we speak! The Five Categories Dust off those cameras! We’re going to have a photo contest! 1. Best Camellia 2.
