Financial circumstances and the nature of the help needed must first be
assessed before a legal aid certificate is granted. Monthly income and
expenses must be revealed.
How to apply Call for an appointment. To apply for legal aid the following documents are
needed: two or three recent pay stubs or unemployment papers, an up to date
bank statement, mortgage documents showing date of renewal, tax notices,
credit union documents, RRSP and GIC documents, any debts and receipt of
payments. If the applicant is self-employed, it is necessary to show income
tax statements. On approval of an application a Legal Aid Certificate will be
issued. A lawyer who participates in Legal Aid services may then be chosen.
If a lawyer is not known, please consult the Lawyer Referral Service operated
by the Law Society of Upper Canada at 1-900-565-4577; a $6.00 charge will
be applied to your telephone bill for this service.

The Halton Legal Aid Office receives and processes client applications and

issues legal aid certificates to eligible applicants. These certificates allow
clients to receive legal services from the lawyer of their choice. Legal Aid
Ontario is available to Ontario residents, and in some cases, non-residents.
Qualification is based upon need and financial eligibility. Please note that to
apply for legal aid a number of documents are necessary. Free weekly clinics
held in Oakville and Burlington.

The Women's Centre of Hamilton is an affirming woman-centered service
description facilitating the empowerment and enrichment of women seeking support,
resources. development and growth. Major Services: 1. Peer Support: trained
volunteers provide one-on-one support for a variety of emotional and practical
issues including partner or childhood abuse (physical, emotional, sexual) selfesteem, family and relationship issues. The focus is on validating experiences
and helping to identify options and offering support. Appointments required. 2.
Peer Support Training: three times a year a 40 hour peer support training
course is offered. 3. Empowerment Programs: self-esteem, assertiveness, anger
management; healthy relationships, anger & parenting. Many mincourses and
workshops are also offered. 4. Social Circle: an free ongoing drop-in for
women Wed 1:30-3:00. Coffee and tea are provided. 5. Duty Counsel for
family law: women have a chance to talk with a lawyer about divorce,
separation, custody, access etc and get free legal advice on a first-come, firstserve basis. First Mon 7:00-9:00 6. Employment program for women - Women
Getting Work, a 6 week training for women who want to participate in an

STRIDE assists individuals with barriers to employment to upgrade work

Some people are registered with the STRIDE Rehabilitation Work
Environment, others are not. Supported Employment services include: *

The Career Centre provides career counselling and/or on-the-spot
employment assistance through our Employment Resource
Centres. The Career Centre is an Employment Ontario program

A program of Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities,

delivered by Georgian College, to assist out of school unemployed or
underemployed youth and young adults, aged 16 and up, to find and keep a
permanent job, with a focus on apprenticeships. Programs include initial
interview and assessment. A new initiative to link unemployed youth with the
employers for young people who want to help to: choose a career direction,
prepare resumes and cover letters, develop job search strategies, and get
labour market and apprenticeship information. All age groups are invited to
access the Resource Centre and/or meet with a consultant for information and
referral. Also runs a Summer Jobs Service each summer, which assists
students in finding a summer job and pays wage subsidies to participating
employers.

The Orillia Employment Resource Centre, operated by Northern Lights
Canada is an Employment Ontario program funded in part by the Government
of Canada. This self-serve centre offers assistance with resumes and cover
letters, job search tips, career information, computer time for resumes and
cover letters, interview tips, Internet access, workshops, access to telephone,
fax, laser printer, photocopier, posted job ads, labour market information,
employer information and reference materials to aid with job search.
Employment needs assessments and employment counselling also provided by
appointment. The ERC offers an accessible workstation, a device for the
visually impaired to browse the web and access word processing, and
communications access for deaf, hearing and speech impaired, amplified
telephone with large numbers and a hydraulic table that can adjust to variable
heights. All computers have current word processing software, Internet access
and caree-assessment tools such as Career Explorer and Career Cruising. For

The Job Support Program assists individuals in finding employment or work
description placements. A Job Support worker/coach will provide on the job training and
assistance where needed to facilitate the individual's transition into the
community work force. The Job Skills Development Program assists

How to apply Applications for Employment Insurance are now accepted online or in person.
When applying for Social Insurance Number, a birth certificate is required; if
the name has been changed, birth certificate and documentation of name
change (Marriage Certificate/Canadian Name Change Certificate). If born in
another country, citizenship documents or landed immigrant papers are
necessary. Simply gather the document(s) you need and take them to your
nearest Service Canada Centre. A Citizen Service Agent will work with you to
process your application online. If your application and document(s) are in
order, you will get a Social Insurance Number in one visit and receive your
card within five working days. Plus, by applying at a Service Canada Centre,
you won't have to send your valuable documents by mail. If you need to apply
