Limitations of the Provisions in the P-P240 Table The author chosen for this shelflisting exercise is Ruben Dario, a Nicaraguan poet known for initiating the modernismo literary movement in the late 1800's to early 1900's. Dario's career was cut short in 1916 when he died at age 49. The classification system used to create this shelflist is the Library of Congress Classification system, (LOC). The LOC was first developed to classify the book collections of the Library of Congress so that they could provide the members of Congress with the information needed to make legislative decisions. From the Library of Congress Classification Outline, we see that Class P contains Language and Literature. This information leads us to Subclass PQ which defines French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese literature. As a Nicaraguan poet from the late 1800's to the early 1900's we find that Ruben Dario's class number is PQ7519.D3. All works concerning this author have this class number and individual works are distinguished by their unique Cutter number and date published. In this classification system an author's works are separated into two main parts: works by the author and works about the author. Following the Table for Literary Authors with One Cutter Number P-PZ40 we are able to further arrange works concerning Ruben Dario. The most difficult aspect of building this shelflist is that there are a limited amount of hard and fast rules and/or directions. However, in many ways, this is also essential for an expanding and changing collection. The collection starts with works by Ruben Dario. I was able to find a volume of his collected works: PQ7519.D3 1917 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. Las obras completas / Ruben Dario. -- Madrid : Editorial Mundo Latino, 1917-20. This work, as Ruben Dario's complete works at the time of publishing, has a class number with no further Cutter numbers which positions it at the beginning of the collection. This leads into the section for “collected poems”. These works are arranged chronologically by date of publication, with “.A17” added to the base class number. No changes to the call numbers were necessary for these works. Next comes the translations of selected works. PQ7519.D3A225 2001 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. [Poems. English and Spanish, Selections] Selected poems of Ruben Dario : a bilingual anthology / Ruben Dario ; edited, translated, and with an introduction by Alberto Acereda and Will Derusha. -- Lewisburg, PA : Bucknell University Press ; Cranbury, NJ : Associated University Presses, c2001. Translations into English. PQ7519.D3A227 2002 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. [Selections. English and Spanish] Stories and poems = Cuentos y poesias / Ruben Dario ; edited and translated by Stanley Appelbaum. -- Mineola, NY : Dover, c2002. Translations into English. No provisions are made for these works in the P-PZ40 table. It would be impossible to keep them in the Selected works section (x.A6) because adding Cutter extension numbers from the Translation Table would bring the work into the (.xA61-Z458) Separate Works section. For this reason Selected works translations are put in the Translations (Collected)-English (.xA2-29) section and arranged in alphabetical order by the translator. This is an example of where the flexibility of the Cutter numbers is an asset in that they allow for the addition of future translations. The number of digits used can increase as long as they remain between the decimals .2 and .29. These texts are also examples of “parallel texts” which are works that contain both the original language as well as the translation language. In these cases the classification number of the work is developed using the first language listed. It should also be noted that Translation (Collected) languages other than English, French and German are not given a specific Cutter number section, but a relatively small “Other” Cutter number section, (.xA5-59), which is loosely arranged by the language. Selected works (x.A6) come next and are arranged by date, followed by Separate works (.xA61-Z458). Due to restrictions in the Cutter numbers available in this section care should be taken when the title of the work begins with the letters “A” or “Z”. These works must be loosely classified using the Cutter Table so that they can not only fit into the .xA61-Z458 restrictions but also maintain alphabetic arrangement by title. Several adjustments/changes to classification numbers were made in this section. For the following work, the original class number found was, “PQ7519.D3A44”. PQ7519.D3A63 1997 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. Amar, amar: antologia / Ruben Dario. -- 1st ed. –- Rosario, Argentina : Ameghino Editora, c1997. I believe the classifier tried to follow the Cutter table number for the title exactly, however, this would have placed the work in the Translations (Collected) in the German language (.xA4-49) section. I changed the classification number not only to fit into the limits of this section (.xA61-Z458) but also to maintain the “alphabetical order by title” stipulation of the section. The next work's title also begins with the letter “A” but because the second letter is a “z” (Azul) which has a Cutter number that fits into the limit of the section, the only adjustment necessary was to add an additional digit (8) to reflect the requirement for at least two digits in the Cutter number. PQ7519.D3A98 1968 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. Azul / Ruben Dario. -- Madrid : Espasa-Calpe, c1968. The next two works represent a Separate work with its translation. PQ7519.D3C36 1940 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. Cantos de vida y esperanza / Ruben Dario. -- Buenos Aires : Espana-Calpe Argentina, 1940. PQ7519.D3C3613 2004 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. [Cantos de vida y esperanza. English] Songs of life and hope = Cantos de vida y esperanza / Ruben Dario; edited and translated by Will Derusha and Alberto Acereda. -Durham : Duke University Press, 2004. Translation of: Cantos de vida y esperanza. For the Separate work, the classification number found was, “PQ7519.D3C62”, however, I felt that “C62” did not accurately reflect the title of the work. To better follow the Cutter Table the “C62” was adjusted to “C36” for C-a-n. The found classification number for the translation of this work was, “PQ7519.D3C2713” so I adjusted the “C27” to “C36” to make it the same as the original Separate work and kept “13” to signify the translation into English. Continuing in the Separate works section, the next two entries illustrate a Separate work with a criticism. PQ7519.D3C84 1982 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. Cuentos fantasticos / by Ruben Dario. -- 3rd ed. -- Madrid : Alianza Editorial, 1982. PQ7519.D3C8433 1967 Anderson Imbert, Enrique, 1910-2000. Los cuentos fantasticos de Ruben Dario /Enrique Anderson Imbert. -- Cambridge, Mass : Harvard University, 1967. 1. Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916 -- Cuentos fantasticos. The found classification number for the original Separate work was extended by the number “4” to fulfill the requirement for two Cutter numbers. For the Criticism, the found classification number was “PQ7519.D3Z52”, which would have placed the work in the General works section. I felt that it was a Criticism of a Separate work because, when examining the MARC record, the author of the book was listed in the 100 field and Ruben Dario and Cuentos fantasticos were listed in the 600 field. I changed the classification number to reflect this move by giving it the same Cutter number as the original Separate work and adding “3” to signify a Criticism and another “3” so that it could be filed alphabetically by the main entry (Anderson Imbert). The last work presented in the Separate works section again had a Cutter number with only one digit (PQ7519.D3R3) so the number 7 was added to fulfill the two digit requirement. PQ7519.D3R37 1953 Dario, Ruben, 1867-1916. Los raros / Ruben Dario. -- 2nd ed. -- Buenos Aires : EspasaCalpe Argentina, 1953. An anomaly of the Table for Literary Authors with One Cutter Number P-PZ40 is that even though, by definition, autobiographies are written “by the author” these works are filed in the “about the author” section, (.xZ46-479). It could be argued that they are also technically written “about the author”, but I would suspect that the desire to keep these works, along with journals and memoirs, shelved together and the observation that there appeared to be more space available in the Biography and criticism section is the reason that they ended up here. The shelflist does not include a provision for the placement of “Interviews”. They could not be included in the Separate works category because they contain a variety of subjects discussed by the author, nor could they be shelved in the General works section because of their distinct main and added entries. Consequently they have also found a home in the Autobiography, journals, memoirs section. General works are the last section on the shelf. There are clues that can be picked up in the MARC record for each work. For example, a record with the author's name in the 600 field followed by the phrase, “Criticism and interpretation” automatically belongs in the General works section. As previously mentioned, we can distinguish this from a Criticism of a Separate work by noticing that there is no “600 $a. $t.”. This would show that the work was about a particular title written by the author. In the General works section (.xZ5-999), works are arranged alphabetically by the main entry. Cutter numbers are loosely assigned to each work to maintain the alphabetical arrangement, ie. those works close to the beginning of the alphabet will have numbers closer to the .xZ5 area and those works closer to the end of the alphabet will have numbers closer to the .xZ999 area. The most critical aspect of shelflisting using the Library of Congress Classification system is determining the “aboutness” of the work. Records vary in quality and level of detail requiring verification of call numbers. I was surprised to find the number of records which did require “adjustment” whether it was necessary for inclusion in the correct section on the shelf or for inclusion in the correct position in a section on the shelf of my particular collection of works. This is where the advantage of the flexibility of the numbers in the Cutter Table comes in. The shortcomings of the Table for Literary Authors with One Cutter Number PPZ40 are most likely due to the original purpose of the Library of Congress Classification system, which was simply to organize the books necessary to research the functions of the Congress, and also the number of separate librarians who have over the years participated in developing the rules of that classification without including instructions. In closing, I would like to apologize for the lack of inclusion of “accents” for the Spanish and French languages of the works included in this exercise. I tried the Alt+number code method but was unable to make it work. For a paper presented physically I would normally hand write the appropriate accent but I don't know how to form these directly on the word processor.
