Keeney Update VOL IV, Number 2 Keeneys note 50th anniversary Monday Roscoe C. Keeney, Jr. MAR 1987 James Maynard Keeney As a prosperous rancher and hotel owner James Maynard Keeney was widely and favorably known throughout Oregon and during the period of his residence in Portland he held a secure place in the esteem of its citizens. Of resolute purpose and marked strength of character, he surmounted obstacles and difficulties which would have thoroughly discouraged the average man and pressed steadily onward to the goal of success. He was born in Brownsville, Oregon, October l 5, 1865. His father, Elias Keeney, crossed the plains in an early day and settled on a donation land claim near Brownsville. James M. Keeney was raised on the home farm where he remained until he reached the age of eighteen, experiencing many phases of pioneer life in western Oregon. For two years he was a student at the State University and next attended a business college in Portland. After the completion of his course he returned home and when he attained his majority was given one thousand dollars by his father. With this sum he purchased a flock of sheep in Arlington, Oregon, but lost most of them during the ensuing winter, which was unusually severe. After this venture he opened a livery stable in Arlington and also served as postmaster of the town. Later he entered mercantile circles of Portland, conducting a cigar store at First and Yamhill streets, but through his partner lost the business. During that time he was offered and accepted the management of a hotel at Shaniko, Oregon, and was so successful that he purchased the property soon afterward. For several years he conducted the business, and then went to Vale, Oregon, where he owned another, which he operated successfully for seven years. Meanwhile he had joined J. N. Burgess in purchasing the Cunningham ranch at Pilot Rock and for eighteen years he was active in the cultivation and improvement of that tract. On disposing of his holdings in eastern Oregon, Mr. Keeney located in Portland and bought a cherry orchard of one hundred acres near Salem. In 1920 he sold his interests in the ranch. His death occurred September 19, 1923, when he was nearly fifty-eight years of age. For years he fought a losing battle against disease but maintained his courageous spirit until the end, being a man of exceptional wil1 power and determination. Mr. Keeney was married July 20, 1904, to Miss Elizabeth Mattock, a daughter of Tom J. and Mary E. Matlock. In 1853, when a child of three, Mrs. Keeney's father crossed the plains with his parents, who settled near Eugene, Oregon. In 1875 he removed to Heppner, Oregon, and embarked in the sheep business. During the great flood at Heppner in June, 1903, he was seriously injured and his wife was drowned. Their daughter Elizabeth fainted and thus narrowly escaped death by drowning. (Picture missing) Marjorie and Lester Keeney of Deland are observing their 50th wedding anniversary Monday. They were married Nov. 10, 1936, in Ironton, Ohio, by the Rev. Preston Malone. The couple will celebrate Sunday with friends at Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Keeney is retired from General Motors in Dayton, Ohio. There he was employed as a toolmaker. Mrs. Keeney was a homemaker. They are members of Calvary Baptist Church. Their children are Carmen Lyons of Vandalia, Ohio; Marinelle Davis of Marietta, Ga.; Barbara Slape of Fairborn, Ohio; James Keeney of Dayton, Ohio; and Beth Milling of LeRouret, France. The Keeneys have 12 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. JONATHAN H. KEENEY (B. Feb.4, 1824 - Mo. -D. Jan.17, 1884) Have found no record of his parentage. Jonathan was born in Missouri on Feb. 4, 1824 and married Mary Adeline Lamb who was born in Kentucky on Dec. 28, 1827. At the age of 33 Jonathan and his wife Mary with five children started across the plains in 1857 by ox team and went to Sonoma County, California. Another child, the sixth, was born on route. Vol IV No. 2 Page 2 of 30 In the spring of 1858 they came by boat to Portland, Oregon. From there they went to Linn County, then on to Lane County, near Eugene where he established a farm. In the spring of 1861 they moved east of the mountains to (Photograph missing of Jonathan Harding Umatilla County where Jonathan entered into the industry of Keeney & Mary Adeline Lamb Keeney) raising sheep. It was reported that he was a prominent wool grower of Umatilla County, and a man of high esteem. Connie Keeney DuFresne, Rt.3, Box 108, Jonathan Keeney died in Umatilla County in 1884 and his wife Vashon, WA 98070, great-great Mary A. passed away in 1885. granddaughter, wants help in locating the parents of Jonathan Harding Keeney. Seven children were born of this union: John Henry, Joseph So does KEENEY UPDATE. Watson, Marshall Sherman, Thomas Benton, Calista, Sarah C., Charles Edward. For more detail - see Genealogy charts (Jonathan H. Keeney), The three oldest sons left the Pilot Rock ranch in Umatilla County and went to establish a ranch near Long Creek, Oregon in 1871. This Jonathan H. Keeney brought his family across the plains from Missouri the same year as my great grandfather Andrew Jackson Keeney brought his. They both journeyed first to Sonoma, California and then by boat to Oregon the following year, stopping in Linn County then going on to Lane county to establish ranches. It would seem that they may have been related, perhaps cousins, but no proof of this has yet been established, or even if they were together traveling west to Oregon by way of California. Joseph Watson Keeney was a son of Jonathan H. Keeney, and Joseph Watson had a son named Birt Keeney who lived in Ione, Oregon - 1910, and he was a cousin to Willard Warren Keeney. NUMBERING: Michael Keeney is a member of the 7th generation of Keeneys in America, starting with Sir Thomas Kenne (Keney), born in 1578 in Norfolk, England, migrating to New London, Connecticut in 1635, fifteen years after the Pilgrims. His father, Moses, left Greenbrier Co. (then VA) to settle on Cabin Creek, Kanawha County, about 1815. His grandfather, for whom Keeney's Mountain is named, settled in Greenbrier County in 1756. Michael & Elizabeth Keeney were parents of fourteen children, the last two dying in childhood. The vast majority of them and their offspring settled in the Kanawha Valley from Belle to Cedar Grove, made their living on or near the river, and raised big families. MICHAEL R. Born in Kanawa County, W Va., little is known about his childhood and early adult years along with Mother Jones (q.v.) organized in 1912 the coal miners of Cabin Creek, W Va., and area regular United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) organizers feared to enter. Along with Fred Mooney q.v. and Lawrence Dwyer, a UMWA international organizer, established three years later an insurgent district, District 30, in the Cabin Creek area to protest alleged corruption and inefficiency on the part of President Thomas Curns (q.v.) and other officials of District 17, UMWA, West Virginia. After District 17 was reorganized by the international union in 1917, elected its president and served until 1924. Within a year of becoming president, helped District 17 add 10,000 members, pay off a $35,000 debt, and show a treasury surplus of $25,000. in 1919, along with the governor of West Virginia, prevented a threatened union miners' march into nonunion territory that promised to result in violence; again in 1921, along with state and federal officials, prevented a second march; and attack by state policemen and Logan County deputies on a union tent colony at Sharples, W Va., in 1922. however, ignited a march resulting in the "Battle of Blair Mountain", in which three deputies were killed and 40 miners wounded. Indicted as a result of the conflict, but acquitted of treason and murder; while under indictment, elected president of the West Virginia State Federation of Labor (WVSFL); defeated for reelection by John Easton (q.v.) in a craft union movement to curb the president of the UMWA in the WVSFL., after his defeat, his UMWA supporters in southern West Virginia boycotted the WVSFL until 1927, along with Mooney, resigned his UMWA offices in 1924 to protest UMWA president John L. Lewis's attempt to enforce the Jacksonville scale in West Virginia, a policy they charged would destroy the union there. Thereafter, the district was administered by provisional presidents Percy T????? (q.v.) and, later Van Bittner (q.v.), moved to Illinois in 1926 to edit The Coal Miner, an official organ of John Brophy's (q.v.) "Save the Union" campaign. During the 1927-1930, was first the proprietor of an orange drink stand and then an oil and gas speculator; in 1930, joined John H. Waljer (q.v.), Frank Farrington (q.v.), Alexander Howat (q.v.), and Oscar (Transcriber's note: remainder of Xerox copy unreadable, except for following credit:) Greenwood Press, Westport Connecticut, London, England) HISTORY OF BAKER, GRANT, MALHEUR AND HARNEY COUNTIES EDWARD C. KEENEY--Although the subject of this sketch has not been so long domiciled in Harney county as some of the pioneers, still he has spent a greater portion of his life in the adjacent territories and thus is justly entitled to a place among the pioneers, having been enraged in labors incident to that worthy life for many years. Edward C. was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on May 6, 1868, being the son of Joseph B. and Frances M. (White) Keeney. His father was an operator in the stage business and did service over many portions of the west. From Salt Lake City they went to Kelton, Utah, thence to Boise, Idaho, and from there to Walla Walla, Washington. Thence a move was made to Weston, Oregon, then to Pendleton, later on to Gilliam county, in which latter place our subject engaged with his father in the horse business. This was about 1889, and later we find our subject an Heppner, operating the stage from that city to Monument. The next move was to Longcreek, Grant county, where he was engaged in operating a hotel for two years and then we find the active Edward C. Keeney in Umatilla county, on Camas prairie, handling stock and tilling the soil. It was from that place in 1895 that he came to his present abode, twenty-three miles west from Drewsey. He has a farm of one hundred and fifty acres, well improved, having comfortable residence and plenty of water for irrigating. He devotes his time and attention principally to raising cattle. The marriage of Mr. Keeney and Miss. Mary Jane Vilott, was solemnized on January 1, 1893, at Ione. They have the following children: Juanita B., Chauncey W., Gladys P. Mrs. Keeney 's father, Isaac Vilott, was one of the very first settlers of the north fork of the John Day river. Mr. Keeney is a member of the A. O. U., Lodge No. 119, of Drewsey. He has served for two years as justice of the peace and his efforts in this line have been with acceptability to the people. Her father was RANSOM GABRIEL GATEWOOD born about 1772. in Amherst Co., VA, d. 1-9-1843 and buried at Gatewood Cemetery at the mouth of Slaughter's Creek, adjacent to the WV Turnpike entrance. Her mother was Elizabeth Burke, born about 1775, died before 1850, daughter of Charles Burke, of Amherst County; their marriage was recorded in Amherst County in January 1799, shortly before they settled at the mouth of Slaughter's Creek, Kanawha County. Ransom Gabriel Gatewood was the fourth child, second son of AMBROSE GATEWOOD, born about 1747 in Spottsylvania Co., VA, and his wife MARGARET, whom he married in 1765 in Amherst Co. She was born about 1750. He died in 1804 in Amherst. Ambrose Gatewood was the third son of William Gatewood (b. about 1720 in Essex Ca., VA, died after 1780 in Amherst Co.). William, who also lived in Albemarle Co. for a time, married Ann Boswell, widow or John Boswell and daughter of Richard Ransom, Gloucester Co., from whom Ransom Gatewood gets his name. William's brothers were Dudley, Henry, Peter, Larkin and Richard . HENRY GATEWOOD, father of William, was born in Rappahannock Co., VA before 1700 and married DOROTHY DUDLEY (16951751 in Spottsylvania Co.). 'from a' family line' which traces back to King Edward I (1239-1307), who married Eleanor of Castile. (sic) By 1722 Dorothy was married to Joseph Baker, who listed the children of Henry as his step-children. Henry relinquished her Vol IV No. 2 Page 26 of 30 rights of dowery and married Tabitha Collins. There were no children in the second marriage. Henry (#1) Gatewood was the fourth child of JOHN & AMY GATEWOOD, the first known Gatewoods in the Virginia Colony. John's name first appears in Virginia records 1-13-1663 as wit-ness to a deed in Rappahannock Co. In 1676 he received a deed for 100 acres in South Farnham Parish. The first child, John, was probably born in 1680. There is no known record of the parents of the first John Gatewood, but one writer says that one of the sons says that he came from England in 1666. Noble, Clerk EAST BANK WOMAN ADDING TO HISTORIC CHARM (Picture Missing: ERMA KEENEY AND DAUGHER LINDA ELLIS TAKE A COFFEE BREAK IN THE KITCHEN) EAST BANK - A kettle of water boiled on the stove as she greeted her guest at the kitchen door. "I hope there's enough to write about," she said wistfully. She then proceeded to take her visitor on a storybook trip into the past. When she was a little girl, Linda Ellis admired the old brick home in East Bank and often visited the elderly lady who lived there - Dorothy Matics who was known as Aunt Dot. "Even at 6, I'd beg the old woman who lived here to let me see the house." Mrs. Ellis said. "I've liked old things and old people since I was old enough to know the difference. I vowed one day I would have this house by hook or crook." Mrs. Ellis didn't buy the house but the next best thing happened. It is now occupied by her parents, Erma and Edgar Keeney, who purchased the house in 1969. Built in 1826 by John Harriman, the house is on the National Register of Historic Places. And Mrs. Ellis is helping her parents find primitive handmade furniture that will add to the home's historic charm. Mrs. Ellis lovingly refinishes each piece of furniture herself. The house has only had three owners in 160 years. Mrs. Ellis said. First was the Harriman family, then the Matics and now the Keeneys. When Mrs. Ellis was a little girl she visited "Aunt Dot" Matics who would show her the stone where she cracked walnuts, and herbs drying in what is now an upstairs bedroom. Now Mrs. Keeney says many knock on her door and ask to see the house. "Most of the time I let them in." Mrs. Keeney said. "I know they have a great interest in history or they wouldn't ask. However, Mrs. Keeney and her daughter say not much is known about the history of the house. The bricks were made on the property, they said. John Harriman who built the house was the son of Shadrack Harriman, a pioneer who came to the Kanawha Valley in 1788. Shadrack, who married Susanna Pryor, was attacked and killed by Indians in 1791. John was married to Nancy Morris and the house was at some time occupied by her distant relative Fenton Morris. Mrs. Matics acquired the house from the Morris family. The initials are SMH and the year 1841 is carved beside them. The diary was written by a member of the Matics family. Mrs. Matics had a daughter whose name was also Dorothy. The younger Dorothy - who coincidentally was Mrs. Keeney's French teacher at East Bank High - left the diary behind. The younger Dorothy writes about mail arriving by train and how she hoped for a letter from her suitor. She writes of going to town and returning home by was of the Coalburg ferry. The house has five bedrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen and two bathrooms which were added on in the 1920s. It has deep wooden window sills and walls 18 inches thick. Vol IV No. 2 Page 28 of 30 The walls of the eat-in kitchen are adorned with antique tools that Mrs. Ellis has collected. Many of the tools have been obsolete for more than 100 years, she said. Among the collection are an iron pot scrubber, wooden hammers, a bean scoop, rug beater, a candle mold, a gadget for skimming the brine off maple syrup, a lid lifter for iron stoves, cow bell, iron food chopper… In the dining room is a butternut china cabinet dating back to the 1840s. "This came from Pocahontas County." Mrs. Keeney said of the cabinet. "In early days traveling carpenters made pieces on the property for food and a place to spend the night." Also in the dining room is a pie safe with holes in the front for ventilation and another cabinet with three corners which dates back to the early 1800s. Mrs. Keeney, who makes dolls for Cabin Creek Quilts, has tastefully placed some of her works and other primitive dolls throughout the house. The house is filled with interesting pieces of furniture which Mrs. Ellis has found in West Virginia, Virginia and Ohio. She restores each piece herself and continues to search for just the right pieces of primitive furniture that will compliment the house.
