CDC’s MIPH program helps low and middle-income countries build human resources for health (HRH) leadership and management skills to aid in addressing the shortage of skilled public health managers that threatens healthcare delivery systems in many countries. It is designed as a one-year program that begins with two weeks of classroom-based instruction, after which participants implement management improvement projects. They continue to receive coaching and technical assistance from SMDP and have numerous opportunities to continue learning via online webinars and other internet-based resources. In August 2010, the MIPH program was held in Gaborone, Botswana in collaboration with CDC Botswana, the Botswana Ministry of Health, and the Botswana Ministry of Local Government. Course topics included team building, coaching and mentoring, conflict management, effective presentation skills, effective training, process improvement, project management, and putting data to work. Participants practiced their training skills in teach-back exercises, with feedback from fellow participants and course facilitators. Thirty-three participants from countries in Africa plus India and Vietnam attended the 2010 program. 3|Page 2010 MIPH Program Yearbook Sustainable Management Development Program The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Sustainable Management Development Program (SMDP) is dedicated to strengthening health systems globally through improved public health leadership and management. SMDP engages, develops, and supports health leaders by building country capacity to achieve lasting health improvements, developing strong partnerships, providing strategic leadership, and advancing the science base through applied research and evaluation. SMDP works with countries to develop professional public health leaders and managers who can plant the seeds for stronger and more enduring health systems. With technical assistance from CDC, countries assess their management capabilities, address quality standards, and take action to put in place policies and practices that improve organizational performance. At the national and district levels, SMDP supports the development of practical management skills using training, field-based learning, mentoring, coaching, and online learning. Those skills can be applied directly to addressing current health priorities. By demonstrating how to transfer these skills to other health challenges a country may face, SMDP helps develop effective and flexible managers. SMDP’s work in strategic partnerships and leadership leverages wide-ranging expertise from across CDC and other organizations. SMDP is working more closely than ever with global health leaders to bring their experience and wisdom to global engagements. SMDP is a strong advocate for good management policies and practices and their application to public health programs and services. 4|Page 2010 MIPH Program Yearbook MIPH Class of 2010 Celestine Barigye Anderson Chimusoro Uganda Zimbabwe Title: District Health Officer Institution: Bushenyi District Local Government Address: Box 1 Bushenyi, Uganda Tel: 256-772-415875 Email: barigyec@yahoo.co.uk 5|Page Title: Provincial Medical Director Institution: Ministry of Health Address: Box 206 Gweru, Zimbabwe Tel: 263-54 221 227 Fax: 263-54224724 Email: achimusoro@gmail.com 2010 MIPH Program Yearbook MIPH Class of 2010 Gaomodimo Dubani Godwin Gana Botswana Nigeria Title: Principal Nursing Officer II Institution: Letlhakeng Sub-District Address: P/Bag 003 Letlhakeng, Botswana Tel: 267-5943294 Fax: 267-5943025 Email: gdubani@yahoo.co.uk 6|Page Title: Registrar Institution: Usmanu University, Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital Address: 2370 Sokoto, Nigeria Tel: 234-8035927162 Fax: 234-8035045144 Email: gojigan2001@yahoo.com 2010 MIPH Program Yearbook MIPH Class of 2010 Abdulhameed Isa Dutse Nigeria Title: Chief, Medical Director Institution: Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Address: No. 1, Zaria Road, Kano, P.O.
