Piedmont Republican Women’s Club GAZETTE SEPTEMBER 2007 VOL. VII THE GAZETTE IS A PRODUCTION OF THE PIEDMONT REPUBLICAN WOMEN’S CLUB, WRITTEN BY AND FOR ITS MEMBERS Rachel Hill, Editor NO. In June, the Republican primary was held: Jill Holtzman Vogel won the nomination for the 27th State Senate seat and Terry Nyhous won the nomination for Center District Supervisor and is unopposed for the election. Thanks to all of you who worked the precincts and reminded friends and neighbors to get out and vote. We always remember that there are men and women in harm’s way, defending the freedom for Americans to vote for the person of our choice. As Republican women, we must work each day to remind ourselves and others how very important it is to not lose that right. Also in June, the PRWC had Dr. Demaris Miller come to our membership meeting to talk about the ever-changing and complex Middle East situation. In July, Peggy Een, Marilyn Rickets and I attended a very interesting program entitled “A Decade of Political Change,” sponsored by the Center for Politics at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond. Both sides of the political aisle attended this event and both perspectives on the political history of Virginia were presented. In August, we all pulled together and hosted the Bluemont Concert Series event in Warrenton. Donna Smith, chair of the “Caring for America” committee, got us all organized and WOW! did you all donate baked goods, tons of pop corn, bottled water, lemonade, ice, paper products and your time. Along with the food and supply donations, PRWC members were present to sell tickets, man the food table, pass out information about our club, and assist in setting up and cleaning up. Thank you all for your support. At the June Board meeting, it was voted to donate $500 to Delegate Mark Cole and Delegate Scott Lingamfelter who both have tough opposition. At the July Board meeting, it was voted to further donate $500 to Jill Holtzman Vogel for her campaign for the 27th District State Senate seat, $250 to Supervisor Ray Graham, and $250 to James Horton, candidate for County Sheriff. PRWC gave to only those candidates who are opposed in their races. We at the grassroots level must continue to work for the future, not just each election. There are enduring issues we should focus on: protecting family values, opposing the ravage of taxes on families, securing our borders from terrorists and illegal aliens, providing a solid education for our children in a safe environment, putting conservatives in the Judiciary, and tending to the needs of our community. There is much work to be done at the grassroots level to keep good honest Republicans in office. YOU HAVE JOINED THE PRWC WITH YOUR DOLLARS, NOW JOIN WITH US IN THE WORK BY MAKING SURE YOU SUPPORT OUR MEETINGS. WHAT DOES THE PRWC DO? “ The PRWC offers Republican women many opportunities to get involved in activities at the grassroots level: working on campaigns, fundraising, helping plan events, donating to worthy causes in our community, staying up to date on legislative news, socializing with politically-minded women, and just HAVING FUN!” ~ PRWC website The latest efforts on behalf of Caring for America are encouraging. At the CFA meeting in August, we decided to donate 30 individual bags for all soldiers in Timothy Whittling’s Unit. Donna Smith, the chair, will contact the VFW and the National Guard to obtain information on local soldiers or specific projects that we can assist and we will get a shipment out to the troops. As of yet, the amount earned August 14th from sales at Foster’s Grill has not been determined. The restaurant is donating 10% of the sales to patrons with CFA coupons on that date. Tickets had been e-mailed to members and passed out at our June meeting. The manager also permitted Donna to give out tickets at the door. We are thankful for all the people who participated and for the restaurant for arranging for the donation. All proceeds go towards blessing our local soldiers who lay their lives on the line for our protection. It is an appropriate way to say, “Thank you and we care about you.” Many PRWC ladies participated in the Bluemont Concert Series fundraiser. Some baked, others worked in the CFA booth, including Hazel Lee Kizer (Clyde), Marilyn Ricketts (Myron), Carolyn Kirkland (Bud), Judy and Kyle Foster, Janet Jackson, Betsy Hostrop, Carolyn Pierce, June Riley, Terry Nyhous, Rachel Hill, Bobbie Miller, Bo Miller, Kay Hayes and Sylvia Worrall (Bill). Members also made monetary donations and were available to help in each and every possible way. To all who helped and encouraged, Thank You. The PRWC earned $282 from hosting this event and, for our service, we will be included in the Bluemont Concert advertisements and directory. Good promotion for the PRWC! There was such an overwhelming response from the ladies with donated goods that we had TONS left over. Terry Nyhous offered to store the goodies at his home until we could make arrangements for delivery of the items. By the next day, Donna had contacted someone to take the donations to the troops at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Thank you, Commander T. Omera, VFW Post #9835 for your assistance. And again, our thanks to all on behalf of troops who will benefit from your donations. ~ Rita Grace 8/29/07 Just in time for school to open, the Piedmont Republican Women’s Club donated 120 third grade dictionaries and 24 Spanish to English dictionaries to M. M. Pierce Elementary School in Remington. For some of these children, our book donation will be the first book they have ever owned. Piedmont Republican Women also donated about $200 worth of school supplies, including spiral notebooks, folders, crayons, pencil boxes, sharpeners, erasers, mechanical pencils, glue, staples, and staplers. Thanks to all of you who donated. It was my pleasure to deliver the books and supplies for some of the children in our county. Note: The mission of the literacy program is to “promote the donation of books and materials to local libraries, schools and other public institutions.” ~ Pat Hillis, Chair 8/22/07 The Support our Troops service program benefited from the activities of the Caring for America volunteer service program this summer. All proceeds from the CFA fundraisers went to our troops. Thank you for promoting community involvement and our troops. Hazel Lee Kizer sent this image with an e-mail to members on August 20. The sorrow in the young boy’s face is heartbreaking, especially since it is matched with his stoic effort to not cry. How many times has that scene been repeated over the past years at the grave of a father or mother? We help our military, not only with our gifts, but also with our encouragement, letters, and prayers. Families need to know America cares. Martine deLizza 508 Falmouth St. Warrenton, VA 20186 540-341-8399 delizza@js.pentagon.mil Welcome to PRWC ! We look forward to working with you. PRWC members are encouraged to bring aboard new members to help with the elections in November. We are the most positive women’s voice in Virginia politics and all members’ assistance is needed in order to retain control of the General Assembly in Richmond and ensure that Virginia continues to be a RED state. ~ Peggy Een 2 Vice President (Membership) 8/21/07 nd E-mail Address Changes Rachel Hill’s correct address is rhill20187@starpower.net Betsy & Berny Hostrop’s new address is gbhg@comcast.net CANDIDATE FORUMS SET 160,000 U.S. soldiers are in Iraq More than 3.5 million Americans are in the military 38% of active-duty soldiers are married with children Approximately 1 million children have an enlisted parent. Two exceptions in this year’s legislature were Republicans Russ Potts and John Chichester whose scores put them with the Democrats. Both men did not seek re-election. Local units of Republican Women are asked to donate books and videos that “reflect Republican philosophy, present outstanding Republican personalities or have historical significance” to local public libraries or the school board. President Hazel Lee Kizer will be donating a selection for the PRWC to the Fauquier County Library. GUIDELINES: Congratulations are in order for the PRWC, according to chair Marilyn Ricketts! The Piedmont Republican Women’s Club will be formally recognized for its volunteer work during the 34th Biennial National Federation of Republican Women’s Convention this September in Palm Springs, California. All those volunteer hours submitted in June to Marilyn added up to a GOLD Club Achievement Award for the PRWC! There are four levels of achievement awards presented by the National Federation of Republican Women each year— bronze, silver, gold and diamond, with diamond being the highest. Each award consists of five categories—club function, membership development, programs, campaign activities, and community relations. Because our club volunteered many long hours providing service in each of these five categories, we have been recognized nationally. PRWC Volunteers, take a bow! Next year, the Diamond Award. AMERICANISM: From the VFRW website: “As Republican activists we have an opportunity to inspire those who are complacent to become passionate, patriotic Americans, and to instill a renewed spirit of patriotism in the soul of others. Our first and paramount objective is to foster respect for the Flag of the United States of American and to set a consistent example for others.” Fly the flag on these days in September, October, November and December: September 3 September 11 September 17 September 21 October 8 October 27 November 11 November 22 December 7 December 25 Labor Day Patriot Day (newest flag day) Constitution Day POW/MIA Recognition Day Columbus Day Navy Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving Day Pearl Harbor Remembrance Christmas Day PUBLICITY: PRWC keeps its members and the public aware of the club and its activities through the Fauquier Times-Democrat. FUNDRAISING: The PRWC set up its display of PRWC materials and patriotic memorabilia at the Fauquier County Fair July 19 – 22. Anna Turanchik , chair of the committee, is ever faithful in making the presence of the PRWC known at local events. Thank you to Anna and her volunteers for their time and effort, doubly appreciated because of the heat, dust, and noise that accompany the Fair. “Love does not keep a record of wrongs.” I Corinthians 13:5 Do you remember the story about the man who was bitten by the dog? When he learned the dog had rabies, he began making a list. The doctor told him there was no need to make a will, that rabies could be cured. “Oh, I’m not making a will,” he replied. “I’m making a list of all the people I want to bite.” Couldn’t we all make such a list? You’ve already learned, haven’t you, that friends aren’t always friendly? Neighbors aren’t always neighborly? Some workers never work, and some bosses are always bossy? You’ve already learned, haven’t you, that we tend to fight back? To keep lists and snarl lips and growl at people we don’t like? God wants your list. He wants you to leave the list at the cross. ~ Max Lucado Grace for the Moment Please notify our Chaplain Bo Miller (540-347-7108) or Communications Chair Bobbie Miller (540-3516015) if you know of someone who needs assistance with health, personal or other issues or if you need assistance yourself.
