Outdoor first aid: 26/27th Nov 2011 LLanberis, Wales This is a 16 hour (2 day) First Aid course. The course will start at 9 am each day and finish by 5pm. Students would receive a First Aid certificate which is valid for three years and is recognised by all the NGB awards. There is an emphasis on the Outdoors and First Aid in the mountains but this course is geared more towards First Aiders with little previous experience. Course outline Day 1 This day will concentrate on most of the major life-threatening illnesses and injuries in the mountains and on Basic Life Support. Introductory Session: REC? Ty Powder is within walking distance of Llanberis, and is 20 minutes (by car) from Bangor or Caernarfon. Accommodation is in a club hut and therefore in dormitory style. There will be facilities for cooking for yourself, please look at their website for further information about location and what you need to bring along. Price The total cost of this weekend including the training, accommodation and certification is £75.00. Instructors: Steve Howe Steve is Rescue Emergency Care Regional Director for Wales. He has been a Mountain Instructor at Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Centre since 1997. He is head of the Mountain Rescue Department at the centre. An active mountaineer since the 1980s, Steve has climbed and canoed throughout the world and was a well-known climber in the 1980s pioneering several routes in North Wales and the Lake District. In more recent years he has been involved in Mountain Rescue having been a member or Ogwen Valley MRT, SARDA Wales and now Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team. Qualifications: Mountain Instructor Award, Mountain Leader (Summer), Winter Mountain Leader, REC First Aid Trainer, International Mountain Leader. Mountain Rescue ECMR Advanced First Aid, NNAS Instructor and assessor. Helen Howe has been into the outdoors since a young age, being Vice-President of her university YHA (mountain walking club). She has been involved in Mountain Rescue since 1991, initially joining Teesdale Search and Rescue Team, then Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue team on returning to her native Lancashire, and SARDA England for fifteen years before moving to North Wales to LLanberis MRT and SARDA Wales. She has qualified three Mountain Rescue Search Dogs.
