Wesclin Community Unit School District #3 7.275R Page 1 Administrative Procedure for Do Not Resuscitate Orders Because certain medically fragile students may attend Wesclin Community Unit School District No. 3 (“District”), parents/guardians may, on occasion, request that school district employees withhold emergency care for the student in the event of a life threatening medical emergency. Such requests may be made by providing a “Do Not Resuscitate” (“DNR”) order to school personnel. It is the general procedure of the District that when any student enrolled in the District’s educational program experiences sudden illness or injury that District personnel shall provide emergency healthcare to preserve life and prevent disability. Accordingly, the District generally does not honor DNR orders in the school setting. Individualized determinations shall be made by the IEP or Section 504 team, however, regarding the emergency medical treatment needs of a specific student. Parents/guardians who submit DNR orders are advised of the following procedures: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) Parent/guardians should notify emergency medical personnel who are likely to respond to a call from the school of the DNR order. When the District receives notification from a parent/guardian that a DNR order exists, the Superintendent will notify the parent/guardian that District personnel generally do not honor such requests, but that individualized determinations shall be made through the IEP or Section 504 process regarding what actions will be taken in the event of an emergency medical situation. The DNR order will immediately be placed in the student’s medical file. District personnel who have been trained in emergency rescue procedures (CPR), are expected to administer first aid, including life saving resuscitating procedures, to a student in the event of an accident, choking, respiratory and/or life threatening emergency. The student’s parent or guardian shall be contacted immediately or as soon as possible after the injury giving rise to the need for emergency medical assistance. Community emergency rescue personnel (911) will be called immediately, and school personnel will continue resuscitation procedures until relieved by emergency rescue personnel. When emergency rescue personnel arrive at the school site, school personnel will transfer responsibility for the student to the emergency rescue personnel. Copies of this administrative procedure will be provided to parents/guardians and a copy placed in the student’s medical file. Issues relating to DNR orders shall be addressed by the IEP or Section 504 team, and individualized determinations shall be made through the IEP or Section 504 process regarding what actions will be taken for a student in the event of an emergency medical situation.
